The old way is rapidly aging.

OK, a piece of sentiment, as this will probably be one of the last written on this old laptop before its honorably retired from duty. This will be number 970 on here, seemingly, for this blog, though its written quite a number for the other blog too, so its coming up on 1900 altogether, wow! Only needs 3 more blog days (at 2 blogs a writing day), so whether I let it get to its milestone or not, no idea, but I suspect not, as its getting a bit weighty for an old lady like me.

I’m not quite sure how long I’ve been using this, but it must be getting close to a decade, and it was only second hand then, so in laptop terms, its even more ancient than me! In truth, like me, its got a few ‘physical issues’ nowadays, as the battery now has an unplugged life of less than 30 minutes, and as I’ve already mentioned, in terms of weight, compared to modern machines, its the weight of a dinosaur! Apart from that, its moody (just like me), and its relationship with Internet Explorer nowadays has almost reached divorce status lol! But yes, I suspect I’m going to find the leap from Windows 7, to Windows 10 a bit of a shock for this old dinosaur! But seriously, my new one will be about half the weight, or less of this one, an absolute blessing for me, especially when travelling!

Do you know the irony though, I paid more for this second hand (£200), than my new one (£165) will cost me, even not taking inflation into account over nearly 10 years? My first ever computer, at the turn of the century, about £900, back then!

I know what my biggest hell is going to be, in changing computers, even assuming Ella can simply transfer my favorite lists over? Passwords! Because everything is preset on here, I have no idea what password I am on for lots of sites nowadays! Yes, that could be fun…rolls eyes…

But yes, its going to be nice to be able to run things on IE again, that I cant run on here anymore, just because of the way websites have changed over the years. Mind, I will probably still use Chrome for some stuff, regardless, just out of habit! Yes, if only it was easy to change for a nice new body, lol. Mind, I’d make sure I had all the ‘right parts’ if I did that, believe me!

Oh, and while I’m mentioning the blessings of technology here… Having accepted I need a mobile phone for security/health reasons (mainly the latter, given my physical state), I have the nightmare of trying to do teleconferences on a tiny mobile phone, for lengthy periods of time, with arthritic hands, which get very sore gripping a tiny phone for 30 minutes, or more at a time. So yes, I’m getting one of those headset set ups, so I can listen, and talk, without needing to hold the phone. Mind, I do swear, if someone sees me out, seemingly talking to myself like an idiot, please shoot me! Maybe not, but you get my drift, lol!

So yes, honest, I am trying to drag myself into the modern world, though both are down to need due to age, and health, than any desire to be technologically cool!

I’m not going to say anything about the political sentiments behind tonights song, however tempting it might be, from both sides of the pond. But yes, they’re talking about events of over 50 years ago, within my lifetime, but a whole different world for so many, I guess?

I’m old and grumpy

Well, in truth I have my moments. Oh fine, I have too many of them nowadays lol. But no, the inspiration today for my blog wasnt really me, it was my dear old laptop that I’m typing this on, with the emphasis on old!

Its not quite first generation, but its definitely getting on a lot, given I’ve had it for about 8 years, and that was second hand! Mind, given that the previous recipient of it never kept his for long periods of time before upgrading, I’d guess its about 10? I know, in laptop terms, a dinosaur! Just like me? Lets just say that in the case of a lot of the keys, its a good job I know where the letters are, because many are worn away, and others barely there!

Before anyone asks, yes, I have got a new one, again second hand, but about half the weight of this ‘goliath’. But fine, the convenience of an old friend, with everything loaded has lasted until now. In truth, the long walk at Newcastle convinced me that it was too heavy for me now, given the damage to my back. So I’d sort of decided I was going to be brave, and get Ella to get me running with my new, lighter one before Seattle, even if hopefully I wont have to walk too far carrying it, if things go to plan.

Anyway, the laptop settled the matter this morning for me! Tried to log on, something about not accepting User Profile, or something, anyway, I couldnt get in! Thankfully Ella called as planned this afternoon, and managed to solve the issue, something had got corrupted in an update last night, but its fine again at present. But yes, to say I’m a bit behind would be to put it mildly! So yes, even before me, this old laptop will be on its way out very soon, though I know I’m going to have nightmares with passwords when logging in on the new one! Lots of forgotten password requests, very likely! Ah well…

Oh fine, just to prove I’m old and grumpy too, and believe me, I am, let me complain about something that will be relevant to me in a few years time, the senior bus pass! Not so long ago, I’d have had one a month ago, now its nearly 6 years time, but thats not what I’m grumbling about. I know there is some sort of similar thing in US, though more often reduced fares than free ones, so…

Lets just say that the freedom to use these cards starts at 9.30 in the morning, after the rush hour. I leave here on the 9.15 bus, before that time, and am due in town just before 9.30. So, logically you would think that the people with the cards would wait until after 9.30, then do their travelling, right? Wrong! Quite often there is someone at my stop expecting to get on for free, who glare at the driver when he says they cant use it. Hey, its an automated machine, its going to get recorded if he did, dummies! The number of times the bus stops, because someone stops it, says, “I know I’m not really allowed on the bus yet, but…” to be told no, glare at the driver, and delay the rest of us, well, its a lot!

I swear that when I get one, I’m not going to even think of using it before 9.30 in the morning, honest! I cant see why they feel the need to try and cheat, they have all day after that to use it, lets face it! I suspect Seattle has some arrangement for Seniors to get reduced fares, but I dont know the age cut, and I’m sure you have to be local, so will be full fares for me, ah well…

Rants over, from the 2 elderly ones here, me, and my laptop! 😛

Right, video time. Twist on the concept totally, in truth. Yes, Clara Johnson worked on this, when they get to the girls coming round in sequence, she’s 2 before Toby Wing (main lady) reappears. Yes, young and healthy, definitely not me!

Just An Old Fashioned Girl?

I must admit, I’ve always seen myself as an old fashioned woman, and in many senses, I am, in the sense that I avoid the idea of owning a mobile phone, of any kind, like the plague. Fine, I have got a very cheap, very basic US one, but thats it, and I plan for it to stay that way.

However, as might be gathered from the fact I’m typing this here, I make one allowance to modernity, my laptop. Well, my current laptop is barely modern, probably on its last feet at present, and even its replacement wont be a new one, but fine, unless you believe the time travel stuff, its more modern than anything Clara Johnson would have known lol! And fine, I use a microwave, and a cable TV system, but…

I didnt buy my first computer in the initial rush of purchases, it would have been about 2001 before I bought my first one. Paid over £800 for a computer that probably had less function than a modern smart phone! And yes, that computer was bulky! Somewhere along the line I decided that I preferred the convenience of a laptop (probably because of all the travel I do, as you can take that with you), and swapped to one of those.

I did, briefly, try using an I-pad, and hated it. I eventually passed it on to someone who did like them, whose old one had packed up, and never again! As for getting a Smart Phone, no way! Besides anything else, those small screens, with my arthritic fingers, no chance!

So fine, I admit it, last night I got home to the news we had no internet, and hated that piece of news. Please, 20 years ago, you’d said that to me, I would have thought so what! But now…? Yes, as you might have gathered, we’re back on now, got back on about lunchtime. But fine, being without it was like being without a close friend! So me, an old fashioned girl? Well, I’d still like to think so, just that I’m one that likes a few modern luxuries, thats all.

Hey, I’m sure that Hollywood actresses had the best stuff in their days, even the chorus line dancers, I’m certain didnt starve! So do I still qualify as an old fashioned girl at heart? Please…?

Fine, video time. The recording is nearly 30 years old, the song over 60! Considering that Eartha Kitt was in her 60’s at the time, its a fantastically sexy performance. And yes, I could do with an old fashioned millionaire myself!
