Yes, some of you may have noticed there wasnt a blog on Sunday, as per the normal routine? Some of you might even have been concerned by that, lol? Well, darlings, I ended up in Bradford a day earlier than normal this weekend, and was a bit engaged that evening, maybe in the style of a different era?
Yes, Bradford went back to the 1920’s (well, one ballroom at the Midland Hotel did at least) on Sunday evening, and I was there. Sadly, bar prices stayed in the modern day, but I’d have been more surprised if they hadnt, lol! Not that my drinks (orange juice darlings, not bootleg gin as rumours might suggest!) seemed that expensive, but I have no idea of bar prices nowadays, in truth.
Sadly, I wasnt staying at this delightfully old fashioned hotel, a bit beyond my budget (though seemingly not as much so as I expected it to be, I found out afterwards), and was at the modern delight that was the Travelodge instead. I know, its only a dozen miles, but was a late finish for public transport, and how much travel my back could take nowadays, I took the easy option. Place was fine, other than not enough warm bedding for this time of year, but other than that, pretty good.
I did take a short (and more apt) flapper dress with me, but it was way too cold for that, even if I only had a short walk, my bare legs would have hated that. I would say, and I’m 60, but there was a woman at least my age, in a dress that just about covered her ‘modesty’ but I suspect she had to walk no further than the car park!
The night was fun, even if I wasnt actually dancing like most, partly because of my back, and mainly because I have no dancing skills anyway, I claim Clara Johnson used up all of those. Might also be all that knee damage, who knows? And yes, I had a ‘partner in crime’ for much of the evening, as Madi came along, suitably dressed.
The band was decent, and some of the outfits were amazing. A good number of the flapper dresses I recognised from Amazon, Ebay and the like, though there were a few that definitely looked vintage too, I must say, and probably were! I do wish I was able to dance at something like this, but such is life. I might have to work on some dancing skills before March, but more on that nearer the time, darlings! But yes, Blackpool, 15th – 17th March, you might want to be there! 😉
And yes, I know its the travel that is my main pain issue, not work, as yesterday was the least painful Monday I have had in a long time. Yes, no journey by bumpy bus to work!
I did do the ‘survey’ for the hotel this morning for the stay, and commented about the bedding situation. I will see on 14th December (staying there again, works dinner) if they’ve taken the advice, but I doubt it!
But yes, 1920’s in Bradford was fun, and maybe I should have gone full flapper, even so, but my knees would have hated me if I did. Maybe next time, hmm?
Right, video time. To be honest, I think some of the dancers on Sunday were better than these, but anyway, gives an idea as to what was going on. Boop, boop a doo! 😉
And before I start the actual blog, may I suggest anyone answering this in the positive about me needs to check their sanity! 😛
To misquote Jean Harlow from Dinner At Eight, “I was reading an article earlier today, and…”
It comes down to, this man was terrified of complimenting, or talking to women nowadays, because more seem to see it as an affront to their morals, than a polite, charming comment. Sadly, in truth, the comments under this piece seemed to suggest he was right, though I suspect that where it was posted (by someone else, who has a reputation for stirring in these matters), the comments in reply seemed to match his views. I know, militant feminists, love them, not! Full of outraged comments about him wanting to take things back to the 1950’s, and before, when in truth, I suspect he doesnt! Well, maybe he does, secretly, but that didnt seem to be the gist of his argument, but anyway…
As an elderly, less than stunningly beautiful, 60 year old Trans woman, I have no idea if the Hollywood trope of a strange man coming up to you in the street, and trying to charm you off your feet is true. Given I missed out on the ‘pretty young miss’ era in my life, it might work for them, who knows? I’ve only had 4 moments of ‘appreciation’ as a woman, and as far as I know, only 1 of those saw my face! 2 of those saw me side on, from a distance, so I think its safe to say my boobs (which arent even natural, lol) caught their eye, not my face. One was up a side street from where I was walking, another was when crossing the road some distance in front of him.
A third guy almost literally bumped into me, when walking up the street to get the bus, but its fair to say the reason he nearly walked into me, was because he looking at my chest, not my face.
The last one, I have no idea what he saw, because I was sat on a train heading for Leeds (yes, that long ago) for work, and he was sat next to me. Anyway, just as he was getting off the train at Dewsbury (intermediate stop), he handed me a bit of paper, with his phone number on, and asked me to call him. Given I suspected he thought I was a ‘natural’ woman (ghastly term, but anyway…), not Trans, I never did. Maybe I disappointed him more by not ringing, but I thought it was easier on him that way, than finding out the truth!
But yes, me, the thought that some guy might have found me attractive (stop laughing!), or wanted a chat over coffee, or a meal with me, and was terrified of the consequences of talking to me, well, thats heartbreaking! I know, I’m not a shy wallflower, so maybe its different with me, but anyway…?
I know, no guy is going to have fallen for my charms, and talk to me, and is scared of doing so, sad turn of events. So, if anyone sees me, and is crazy enough to want to chat while making gooey eyes, over a cup of coffee, please do so! I promise I wont ring the lunatic asylum until afterwards, if you declare undying love, lol! 😛
Tonights video, a short one from 1929. No, despite it being dancing from that era, Clara Johnson isnt there! Why, because its from Broadway, lol! Just think, shortly after this, Wall Street crashed, and then… 😦
Yes, you can tell there wasnt Health & Safety inspectors back then!
I got a nice surprise while I was away, when a friend of mine asked if I would still be in the NYC area on 19th October (do the date that way, to get around the whole UK/US thing), and sadly I had to say no, that I was actually flying back home last Monday, and enquired why? The answer, darlings, before you ask as well, is this:
Yes, something important in a publicity sense (a reading, I believe?) is happening in NYC that day, and they wanted me to be there. Well, Jeffery did for certain, and I’m sure he wouldnt have asked without checking with Barry, so to say I’m flattered, would be putting it mildly. Lets just say that I’m assuming he only wants me to attend the event, and nothing more, but of course, you meet people at things like this, and who knows where things might lead from there?
Equally, I thought I was going to a wedding as a guest, only to discover I was a bridesmaid, which turned out to be being Maid of Honor, and where all that led to. No, I dont think I’m likely to end up starring, or even working on Broadway (though I wouldnt say no, if offered), but its that thing of getting yourself known, and seeing where it takes you?
Sadly, unless I win the lottery (I know, stop laughing), I really havent got the money to go at present, especially as the ‘old girl’ is on a 4 day week at present due to her back issues. So yeah, probably any part needs me either to be sat, or in a wheelchair, which pretty much kills most roles anyway! But yes, I could make a cute ‘flapper’ for the day, given the chance! In truth, I dont even know if the holiday is available at work at present lol, but…?
So fine, if any ‘guardian angel’ out there wants to make my dream visit come true, then I’d love it. No, I dont expect it to happen, but no harm in asking lol! Comment here, or email at firstname.lastname@example.org if there is a W.R Hearst type out there, lol!
Regardless of helping me out, if you’re in the area, and hear of this event happening, go support it, please! 2 lovely friends deserve all the support they can get, in every sense, and I only wish I could be there to help them too. If anyone needs details of venue, and time, and cant find it, ask, and I will ask. My logic is, if I cant get there, its probably better I dont know. Equally, Jeffery, or Barry, if you see this, and want to add those details to the piece, please do!
Video time. Well, it might include some Clara Bow, and it might feature film from one of her better known movies, so…
Well, as always with me, I never believe something is going to happen to me, until it actually happens, but…it seems likely I’m getting a photo session done on Monday, and even better, it will be vintage style. No, I dont know if it will be 20’s, or a more recent era, but it will be fun, whenever its from, assuming it happens. Yes, I know, it should, but I’m a natural born pessimist lol!
And yes, if it does, I will post at least one picture in the blog, I promise you. The added bonus of it being a vintage look, is that it will fit in with my author persona, even more so if it is a 20’s look. And yes, I do mean 1920’s, not some fantastic silver item of the future that we dont even know about yet lol! Sadly in a sense, the hairstyle would be mine. I know my wig wearing days should be in the past, but if I could get hold of a nice black helmet bob wig (like the ones the dummies in BHS Leeds get to wear) then that would be even better. But given this is Friday evening, and its happening Monday lunchtime, I dont think it will.
Make up and hair done, so I shouldnt look too shabby, should I? 🙂 Certainly it will be fun regardless, and despite the flappers generally being younger than me, oh, who cares, darling?
Before that, I’ve a long weekend at work to look forward to, ah well…but maybe on Monday, boop, boop a doo!
The video, well continuing with the 20’s thing
For those of us who have written stories in the past, the only outlet for your work, unless you were very lucky, was to post it on the internet, and hope somebody liked it, for no financial gain whatsoever. And yes, I’ve written a good number of stories in the past, though not a lot in recent times, I just dont have the time any more.
Principally I wrote for one site, under a nom de plume, and they got a mixed reaction. Some people loved them, some people didnt, and a few opinions in between. But to put it bluntly, my writing skills were never going to appear in Waterstones, Barnes and Noble, and the like!
Then along came ebooks, though initially when they did, it was only established authors that appeared even then. Then slowly but surely, more humble writers found this gave them an opportunity to sell their works to the wider world, or at least try to do so. To be honest, I pretty much ignored this development, the one comment that seems to have come out of it, is that you need to post new stuff on a regular basis, and I’m in no position to do that any more. But, in the deep distant past, I have two stories that never got posted on the net, for various reasons. Not that they werent good enough, they both got a decent reception when posted on the Forums, but they didnt qualify for the site, under the rules.
Well now, I’ve decided they deserve that bigger audience (maybe), so I’m going to try to sell them as ebooks. No, I dont expect sales rivalling Jane Eyre and the like, if I sell any, and certainly more than a couple, I will be thrilled. I’ve got a lovely friend known as ‘Pan’ who has bought me a couple of stock images to use as book covers, a present for all the reviews I’ve done, very kind of him, all the same.
So sometime in the next few weeks, I will become an ebook author. If you’re good, or even if you’re not, I’ll probably advertise a link on here when they are up and available. I’m pretty sure my wonderful editor has already checked them over, but I’ve sent them back to him, just in case, before publishing to the world.
If they do OK, I do have a couple of posted stories that dont really fit in with said persona, and I might add them to the collection. But if they sink without trace, probably not!
In the meanwhile, here is a very ancient song that might give half a clue as to the synopsis, and title of one of the stories
No, not that well known one in New York, the far better one in Kansas! Yes, as mentioned earlier in the week, this is about College Football, more importantly the Kansas State Wildcats.
Yes, today heralds the end of the College Season, though a good number of teams will still have one game to go, a bowl game somewhere. Hopefully the Wildcats will win tonight, win the Big 12 Conference, and head for the Fiesta Bowl, but as that doesnt start until 1 in the morning my time, you’ll have to look that up for yourself.
Up to 2 weeks ago, they had dreams of the national title, then it all went wrong against Baylor, and now we have to win tonight against Texas just to win the conference title! Hopefully Collin Klein can also play his way back into Heisman contention as well.
But having done my cheerleader stuff for the Wildcats (and personally, I suspect I’d look silly in one of those skirts, but…), I’ll come to the other side of matters, that will be happening all over the US this week, or indeed last week for some, those players for whom the end of their senior year, is the end of their career. Yes, the stars will go on to the NFL, and various other leagues, but for many, thats it, and that must be a strange feeling. For some of course, they have higher futures anyway, for example the Ivy League people will earn fortunes in other high powered positions.
I have no idea what thats like, I was never that good at sport, so it never really arose for me. I did play cricket for the school, but thats a whole different level of intensity, lets face it.
I get to go to Kansas next year, though I suspect I wont be taking Manhattan somehow, but you never know? I might get to see one Kansas College, assuming Wichita State is actually within the environs of Wichita that is! I might see more, but that depends on events I wont know about until the New Year, so watch this space then.
Ah, the video. Yes, as you might have guessed, the song is about that place in New York, not the one in Kansas, but you cant have everything. Besides which, given the time Louise Brooks (from Kansas) spent in New York, and the fact that the video is from 1929 gives it all a bit of the perfect circle feeling. No, I dont know the artists, but I’m sure Google could find it if you really want to know
