Just a brief piece to wish all those who read my waffling’s throughout the year, and those who just pop in occasionally, a Merry Christmas, which if I do this right, should appear in the first minute of Christmas Day in Hollywood, which seems rather apt timing for Clara, at least. Yes, 8 in the morning for UK readers, which is still a reasonable time, lets face it.
The rest of the year will be the traditional annual review, and a look forward to next year, though in truth, beyond 2 trips to Blackpool, I have no plans in concrete as yet for 2019.
So what can I offer, given no videos? Well, a pair of pictures, of both myself, and Clara, in the most seasonal shots I have.
As Slade said, so many years ago, It’s Christmas!
Indeed, if you believed the idiots doing the long range weather forecasts 2 months ago, we should now be in the middle of continuous snow, from mid November, until mid March. Yes, we had a little bit of snow, briefly, but that was it! The irony is that this is about the 4th winter in a row that they have forecast Arctic conditions for months on end. We could still have some yet, but I wont hold my breath!
So this is it, the last post before Christmas Day. The rest of the week will include the traditional review of the year, though it might get a bit unbalanced, as a lot more happened in the last 4 months, than in the first 8, so it will probably end up being split that way. There will also be the traditional look forward piece, all the things I’m expecting to happen, a few that could happen (some more unlikely than others), and a few that would be fun, but almost certainly wont happen! So yes, a dreamed of, alien abduction might just appear in that last section lol!
Well, I know of 2 presents, one that I specifically requested when asked for, and one because we were expected to open our ‘Secret Santa’ presents at work. Beyond that, no idea! Nothing dramatic, I’m sure. Definitely safe to say no alcohol this year. A maxi length flapper style dress would be fun, but given that no one has asked my clothes sizing, I’m pretty sure thats not coming. Not that flappers did maxi length dresses, but I’m not 20 something any more! Was I ever, lol? Oh, the delights I missed out on by not being a girl when I was younger!
So yes, Santa, if you want to arrange for me to wake up in the morning, as a young lady, with a cute figure, and all the right bits, I would be so grateful!
Oh, and lastly, it seems that I’m going to reprise the Elf role quite quickly, tomorrow in fact, for a young lady visiting here at present. Wasnt my planned outfit for tomorrow, but will sure be fun, all the same.
So, at this point, I’ll take the opportunity to wish all my readers, a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, or Seasons Greetings, whichever you prefer. Yes, thats definitely the Civil Service neutrality option lol. Tonights video is probably my favorite Christmas song, probably because its not your usual saccharine effort, just the opposite in fact. Sadly, Greg Lake is no longer with us, but thats no reason not to play this live version, all the same.
I hope you get the Christmas you deserve! 😉
Well, here we go, now into the final week of build up to the big day, and in truth, if you believed the TV, and especially the adverts, its all about presents, and not the more significant event on December 25! I know, its a big time for the retail industry, and all that, both in shops, and online, but seriously, it almost feels like some significant event has been forgotten from what I can see!
You know the joke about all the sales running into each other? Well, a site I’m unlikely to ever buy goods from (due to the hassle of importing, and postage costs from the US) have been running various 20-25% off offers ever since the beginning of the summer, if not before! Yes, considering the NFL is meant to be a multi billion dollar industry, they seem to wish to inform you of these sales by email, about 3 times a day, minimum! Mind, at the grossly over inflated prices they sell stuff for, even with 25% off, they are probably pretty pricey, even if you live in the US! Bah, humbug, lol! 😛
Not that any of the other major sports dont also rip you off on the costs of items, but they seem to be the one who push it the most into my email box.
What would I like for Christmas? Being honest, beyond the one thing I know is coming, which is a pair of winter boots, who knows? Not sure I do, in all honesty, so grateful I didnt have to come up with a long list of ideas for people, in truth. I could come up with a whole load of unpractical ideas, like a new back, or a flying spacecraft, so that I dont have to pay air fares to the US, or even a full new body, a la young Clara (Elaine) Johnson, but none of those are likely to happen, lets face it. Neither do I seriously expect to be offered a movie, theater, or TV role of any note, under the circumstances, but thats still more likely than the 3 previous suggestions!
Talking of Clara, I’ve just noticed that a color picture I’ve found of her is actually available on a poster, reduced at the moment, at what I thought was a reasonable price, and then yeah, add on a third again, minimum, to get it to me! Still, if anyone wants to spoil me, ha ha…?
Not that I know what I’d do with it, but anyway… I will have to see if that movie is available on Amazon at some point, at a sane price! Not sure when I’d watch it, but…
Well, tomorrow is Elf working day, which will be fun for sure, though the outfit is above the knee, so even with tights, at my age… hmm? No, only wearing it at work, not for travel, definitely not in weather at present! Yes, Secret Santa day, when you dont know what you’re getting, and technically, who you’re getting it from! I’m sure there will be pictures, and if I get some, I will post them for your, err, delight.
Still, funny to think, this time next week, all the fuss will be done with, for another year!
OK, video time. In truth, I’d assumed I’d used this here, but cant find it, so the Christmas choice for tonight is a song made famous by Steeleye Span, though this is the far more recent Erasure version. In truth, despite the element of modern synthesizer, it probably has a similar sound to medieval times!
Well, if that title has got you totally confused, its a play on what, in my opinion at least, was the last decent Christmas record made. Oh fine, its totally over the top, reminds me of the glam rock era, so thats probably why I love it, but anyway…
So fine, given I havent got a lot of material to work with tonight (suggestions would be wonderful), lets run with the entertainment of the weekend. Yes, this does include serious work, but a lot of other things as well.
As I’ve mentioned before, the office is a serious (well, relatively), hard working place for 5 days of the week. Then, along comes Saturday! Now, because a good percentage of our work involves dealing with Solicitors, and other legal people, who dont work on Saturday’s, the last day of the week tends to be relatively quiet. It means we get more admin work done, as even with less of us in, the phone call numbers are definitely less. And while work is still done with dutiful care, the atmosphere of the office tends to be lighter, especially if Madi is in.
It also means that meetings can be held, tests can be taken, and lots of other useful things. Yes, I did both yesterday. What also happened yesterday, was preparations for the Christmas Display checks, which will be done tomorrow. One item in our teams display, is one of those singing animal things (reindeer), singing Jingle Bell Rock. Yes, it might have got played yesterday at some point, when all was quiet lol! And it was singing away again as I left the office yesterday too.
The other related piece of Christmas craziness, is that well known office tradition, the Secret Santa presents. Yes, I’m involved, though I have no idea why I do it, given I never know what to buy for people I know, let alone those I dont! But anyway, Wednesday week (20th), at the last team meetings before Christmas, said presents will be given out. Given diversity, we have a Miss Claus this year, yes, Madi. She will also be having an assistant elf, yes, me! Much to the disappointment of someone (who shall remain nameless), my outfit at least is relatively tame, material wise at least, but as I was buying, I cant afford leather lol!
Still, its quite cute, I think…? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360685383755
So, if anyone has roles for an elf in the near future, just let me know, OK? 😉
Right, the video. I think its fair to say that The Darkness felt like Glam Rock revived, and their Christmas hit most definitely has that feel. Enjoy, folks. And I promise, if anyone wants to risk their camera/phone, by taking a picture of me in that elf outfit, and sends me a copy, I will post it as a Christmas, err, treat for you!
(Major tongue in cheek warning here)
Did you know there are some people that think all Civil Servants are pompous, presumptuous, and controlling, a bit like Humphrey Appleby in Yes, Minister, and Yes, Prime Minister TV series? Maybe they were back in the 70’s, and 80’s, but now, seriously…we’re almost as human as the rest of you! 😛
Dont get me wrong, we take our jobs very seriously (quite rightly), but anyone who thinks every man comes into the office dressed in suit, and tie, and women dressed in business dress, and high heels, well, you’re going to be disappointed, all the same!
For those of you keeping an eye on the calendar, you might have noticed that December, and Christmas is just around the corner? So yes, that means that ‘annual delight’, the buying of gifts for a work colleague, better known to some as ‘Secret Santa’. Yes, even Civil Servants do these things. I know, shocking! Well, our office does, anyway.
So fine, we all buy one present, hand it to one of the team leaders, and then all presents are handed out dutifully, right? Wrong, seems there is a demand for a Miss, or Mrs Claus to hand out the gifts. Which might seem a little ott, except that we have a team leader, and an actress who quite fancy that idea! Now whether this is a dull, practical outfit, or something slightly more fun, well…lets wait and see! But, if you fancy a few pennies on the latter, you might be on a winner! Given I’m nearly 60, I suspect not too wild (plus it is a working office), but something a little fun, absolutely.
I do believe that many years ago, and I do mean many years ago, I dressed up as a helper for Santa. No, I cant remember why, it would be around 40 years ago, and my memory isnt that good! So it wont be a first, but definitely will be fun if it happens.
Yes, as I say, we Civil Servants really are a dull, boring bunch! Honest! Well, maybe…?
Right, 2 videos for the price of 1 tonight, you are honored. Firstly, a harking back to my teens, a tribute band. No, most would never have heard of the bands we covered, so lets leave it there. This is decent, and the guy is clearly a Dodgers fan (Excellent taste), so lets run with this. No, I know nothing more about him, before you ask.
Secondly, some very suitable female outfits for Christmas. Also, its from Boston, a wonderful city in New England. I suspect what I might be wearing might not be a million miles from this, just warning you.
I guess for many, Christmas Day is nearly over by now? Then again, its only 11 in the morning in LA as I write this, so maybe not? For most in the UK it is, and given thats where I am, I’m beginning to feel that way myself. Yes, I’m very full at present, mainly because I waited until tonight to eat my main meal, sheer habit, I guess?
So what can I say, beyond I’m hoping you are enjoying/enjoyed the day. In terms of gifts received, I cant tell you much, because the other 3 here are away until tomorrow, and I said I’d wait until then before opening mine, when they get back. So at present, I know only of one, a lovely gift from a wonderful woman in the US, who I havent even met yet (hoping to do so in September), which only makes it more special. Fine, you want to see it? OK.
The rest, details in the next couple of days, I guess? No, the aliens didnt deliver that flying saucer I was hoping for, lol! Well, unless thats arriving tomorrow as well?
The day has been fairly quiet, beyond a couple of cats I’m minding demanding food at far too regular intervals, very loudly! Suits me fine, to be honest. I’ve done my usual silly Christmas Day thing, of wearing a dress I wouldnt wear any other day of the year, a pink flapper dress. No, its not that its pink, or flapper style as being the reasons I wouldnt wear it, but its well above the knees, and given my surgically treated (numerous times) knees, they’re not a pretty sight! I did try a couple of selfies, but they havent come out well, so you’ll just have to take my word on those!
The one delight I had, was finally getting to see that movie that so suits me, The Artist. Yes, by sheer chance, saw it on BBC2 this afternoon, and loved it, thought it covered the whole era very well.
OK, thats about it, go enjoy your day, or evening, or whatever…
To close with a video, hmm? To be honest, this choice was made for me, care of Bradford Interchange, and their Christmas Carol choice. Far too often, a very tinny version of this, which sounded like Depeche Mode had mixed it was playing, and no, it wasnt good. Hopefully, for nearly a year at least, I wont hear it again! This version is much sweeter!
Oh fine, any of those 3 dresses the singers are wearing, in my size, yes please!
In truth, there are probably only 2 days in the year when people really notice the importance of the day of the year, one is New Years Day, the other is tomorrow, or already, in some parts of the world, today, that is Christmas Day!
In fact, on one technically uninhabited island in Kiribati, it was Christmas at 10 in the morning my time. Is it pertinent to point out that in one small part of the Pacific, it wasnt even Christmas Eve at that point! Strictly that status happened for 2 hours, though for the second hour at least, the only places still on the 23rd were 2 uninhabited atolls, and maybe some ships at sea? Yes, Wikipedia is helpful for confirming such matters lol!
But in fact, given that Samoa, and American Samoa, which are probably the 2 closest islands in the Pacific on opposite sides of the dateline are about 100 miles apart, its unlikely that anyone in that part of the world can look into the future, or back into the past, they are simply too far apart.
All the same, there is one place in the world, where it is possible for people living on one side of the dateline to look into the future, and thats part of Alaska. Yes, the Diomede islands are separated by only a couple of miles, but in terms of time zones, they are 21 hours apart! Yes, I know, it should be 23, but blame Russia, and mainland time settings, and…the fact that 1 of those islands doesnt really need a time zone!
Yes, Big Diomede, on the Russian (tomorrow) side of the date line has no resident population nowadays, other than a few weather people, and a few military people living there at times, as the Inupiat population was packed off to the mainland during the Cold War, to stop contact with the US being possible. Little Diomede still has a few hundred residents living there, and yes, they can very easily see ‘tomorrow’ on the other side of the date line, apart from when the weather is truly awful, which it is quite often, in fact!
The biggest moment of fame for Little Diomede was probably when Michael Palin started his ‘Full Circle’ journey there, with the intention of completing that circle by returning there at the end, but couldnt due to weather conditions!
Of course the biggest misconception about how close mainland Alaska, and Russia are, is down to that political idiot named Sarah Palin (no relation to above), who claimed she could see Russia from her home. Yes, unless she has a secret home on Little Diomede, then no, she cant! Strictly, high points around Tin City, in the North West can in Summer, but no, the likelihood of Palin having been there is pretty much zero too! Mainland Alaska, and Russia, closest point, about 55 miles, and that area of Russia is so remote, its not really worth seeing at that distance anyway!
But yes, on Little Diomede, weather permitting, which might be unlikely, and for a few limited hours of light at this time of year, could see into the future, and see Christmas!
OK, the last pre Christmas video, though I suspect tomorrow’s might be related to that time, I guess? Its fair to say that this song is the forgotten song of Christmas, and I have no idea why? Maybe its too thought provoking, maybe because it suggests something other than angels, who knows? But yes, it should be heard more!
Yes, in truth, it really is. Amazingly, at a time when I’m working, its the longest break I’ve had at Christmas in a long time, a whole week! Yes, what could best be called William Hill syndrome sometimes meant that I got Christmas Day off, and that was it! This time around, I finished yesterday, and dont go back until next Thursday. I then do 2 days, then off again from Saturday, until the Wednesday, when normal service resumes. Yes, the last is only because Tuesday is my day off for the week, but besides all that…
In truth, the monthly travel pass ends tomorrow, when I plan to go no further than the local shops (maybe?), and I wont bother again until Thursday, so I wont go too far now in the interim. Even if I cant pay for the holiday until the New Year break (should be able to work it after pay on 30th), I hope I can get the details sorted out before then. Yes, I know the flight, have an idea where it will be, if a hotel, but still contemplating a glance at Airbnb, and seeing if anything will tempt me, but I doubt it. Hotels dont need a mad dash for supplies after arrival, and prices arent that dramatically different, so…
Yes, my present to myself lol! Well, assuming there is still an America by then!
I groaned this morning when I saw the news, that Trump, even before becoming President, is seemingly trying to build up his nuclear missile arsenal, and being aggressive about it. Yes, fine, Russia is already reacting to that, and I thought they were supposed to be friends! Worse, he’s doing it all on Twitter, ah well…!
As to the inauguration thing, nothing but grief there too. No one wants to perform for him, and one group that seemingly will have to, The Rockettes, are already saying they dont want to. Most other entertainers are seemingly trying to arrange a concert to compete with his inauguration, to ruin his viewing figures, that should be fun!
I also saw someone (I assume less than seriously) suggest that California (or another, suggesting all 3 West Coast states) become independent from the rest of the US, now wouldnt that be fun? Would be wise to do it before Trump builds up his nuke collection, just in case…ah well…Please let me know which I need a visa for, USA, or California! Or Cali-Washing-gon? 😉
So yes, at Christmas, peace and goodwill to all on Earth, not! Fine, hopefully I’ll be feeling a little less cynical about it all tomorrow night!
Having already used Greg Lake (for the wrong reason), this seemed the obvious call.
No, before anyone gets over excited, starts making wedding plans for me, and anything else, its nothing like that! For one thing, they’re from a woman, and I know nowadays, but she doesnt rock that way lol! In fact, if she hadnt had ‘fun’ with the website, I suspect it would have been this,
or something similar, but when, and where I would have actually worn it, I have no idea. Mind, if someone wants to provide me with the matching flying saucer…? 😀
Yes, its a lovely floral display, with some silver, and gold in it, anyone would think she knew me far too well? I meant to take a picture today, but it hasnt happened, so for now, you’ll have to believe me. Even if I had, I’d have to find the lead to let me download it to here, so…lol. 😛
She’s actually one of a pair of Facebook friends I’m hoping I can get to meet next September, but given I’m not sure exactly what my long time friend has planned for me, I havent got anything concrete on that. I’m also hoping to get to New Hampshire to be hypnotized, so that I can find out more about my past life self. So throw in a proper break for both of us, and…we will see!
Yes, before you ask, its an early Christmas present, love it. Now, if I had that alien suit lol…and the use of a flying saucer/space craft? 😉 Then I would be able to go and visit her sooner, which would be wonderful! Oh fine, if anyone other than S needs measurements, let me know, OK? 😉
All other presents will actually be waiting until Boxing Day, as the rest of the household here are away until then, after tomorrow, and I’m going to wait until they get back to open mine, I’m good like that.
OK, the video. A total misnomer, but its a lovely song, and does mention flowers, so…
Oh fine, just a quick one, but for the wrong reason, it gives me the chance to put up the video for what is probably my favourite Christmas song of all time, because I’m perverse like that.
Back in the 1970’s I was more into Glam Rock, than Prog Rock, so the likes of King Crimson, and ELP (with the exception of ‘Fanfare for a common man’) pretty much passed me by. But in those good old days, before X Factor and the like, the leading acts went crazy at Christmas, and issued records specifically aimed at that time of year. Fine, Slade and Wizzard might have been more serious attempts than say, The Wombles, but anyway…
Then in 1974, along came the song that for want of a better term, was the antithesis of the standard Christmas hit. The one looking at the cynical commercialisation of the event, and a jaded look at all the wars going on in the world at that time. Yes, Greg Lake. Amazing thing is, how many dont realise it is anti the traditional Christmas scene, especially in shops at this time of year.
Anyway, yesterday, I heard the sad news, Greg has died at 69, another victim of cancer. So yes, you’re getting the obvious RIP tribute song from me.
