Going back a century

No, not for real, and for now at least, for one day only, honestly. And fine, unless you’re within reasonable distance of Blackpool, England, you’re not going to see any of it, I’m sure. But yes, a week on Saturday, I will be the perfect embodiment (well, perfect is stretching it, I guess?) of an Edwardian lady. I know, stop laughing, as the best I can possibly do is imagine what life was like as an Edwardian lady, and play my part accordingly. Oh, for all those now putting Blackpool, on June 9th in their diary, and wondering why, this is why!

Blackpool pier day

Yes, you know you want to be there, dont you? I know, for most of my readers (given that my stats suggest most are in US), its not going to happen. But if you read this, and are in reasonable distance, feel free to come and support. If you do, and you see a mature Edwardian looking lady, dressed in purple, come up and introduce yourself to me!

I know, according to history, and well, Wikipedia, an Edwardian lady should be tightly corseted under her outfit. Well, maybe…? Put it this way, I’m planning on taking a corset with me, and if someone offers to tie me up ‘tightly’ in it, then I wont say no! Snag is, the corset is elderly, not as elderly as me, but over 10 years old, and hasnt been worn for a long while, as I have always found tying knots difficult (especially behind my back), and as the arthritis in my fingers has got worse, it became impossible more than a few years ago, so I have no idea how strong its feeling, or even if it will fit me now! But if anyone in West Yorkshire, or the Blackpool area (person, or company) has a corset I can borrow for the day, natural waist around 34 – 36 inches (no, I dont do centimeters lol!), please contact me through here, or by email at stephmajor8@hotmail.com . Should anyone do so, please put corset somewhere in the email title, so that I spot it amongst all the spam, lol! It is for a good cause, and it will be returned, just saying… I could provide a Paypal address, but in truth, I dont think I could purchase one now in time to get it here in a week!

I must admit, my previous research on the Edwardian era is pretty much zero, having never played any parts set in that era in my time. All I do know is that its a very different time to now, it was only during that time that people flew in a plane for the first time, and that first flight lasted 11 seconds! Yes, a few balloon flights before then, but to travel any great distance, you went by sea. I do remember ‘Upstairs Downstairs’ from TV, many decades ago, and I’m pretty certain I’m playing more of an ‘Upstairs’ lady on the day. It was a period before WW1, when the world seemed so at peace, little realizing that a decade or so later, all hell would break out, quite figuratively. Though of course, for most women at that time, they didnt go to war, beyond a brave few. Oh, and before the vote of course, though the Suffragette movement was just beginning to take off by then.

But yes, a week on Saturday, I’m going to do my best to play the part of a ‘fine’ Edwardian lady, before I return to modernity again for the evening. I wonder what the woman of a century ago would make of modern life? Or indeed, what I would make of Edwardian life, even as a fine lady?

Fine, video time. Its fair to say that the Edwardian times have definitely gone. Strangely enough, music videos of that era are slightly lacking! So, a little live Bucks Fizz instead. I have used the original video before, but not for 6 years, but as I found this…

To get a piece of the action

I must admit that when one of the big bosses called me into an office on Friday, my mind tried to work out what I could possibly have done wrong? Even more confusing when she invited one of the guys in at the same time, especially as he was acting as a team leader at the time. Oh fine, before anyone worries, I’d done nothing wrong!

I had noticed a couple of people from our department spending some time in another department on our floor, which deals with certain cases when they come in. Yes, they are called initial action, for the obvious reason, and why the video link for this was so easy to choose!

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I was asked if I fancied some training/shadowing time over in that department, and I couldnt say yes quickly enough. It will be interesting to see another department in action, especially one that deals with figures a lot of the time. Yes, mathematics, and figures have always been a love of mine, and I dont mean the hourglass figure I’d love to have lol! The latter, well if I could miraculously develop one in the next 3 weeks, might be handy! Or even by September, as I know a couple of ladies over in the US who would love to see me happily married, and living over there. But anyway…

So I’ve got a day on the phones tomorrow, as per normal, then the rest of the week, seeing how another department does its thing. Yes, starting Tuesday, so dont expect another blog before Saturday, though you might be lucky, as I will be working 10-6, instead of 11-7, but dont hold your breath! No idea, if its 1 week, or 2 at present, so watch this space for info on that. Why not the start of the week, because the lady I will be sitting with does a special task on a Monday, and because last Monday was a Bank holiday…you get my drift, she wont need me around that day!

Funnily enough, over here, next Monday is a Bank holiday too! So now I’ve ended up with a long weekend there, though I’m assuming that if I’m still on this secondment, I might be in on the Tuesday again, which will be weird! If it does, it means yesterday was my last Saturday working until June!

So yes, looking forward to learning something new, and the chance to discover if a department that I think would appeal to me to work in, really is that! Wish me luck!

Right, video time. Not one of Bucks Fizz’s bigger hits, but I liked it all the same!

Truly Jean Harlow? Only in the land of make believe!

Oh fine, if that title doesnt give away what the video is, I give up!

Its fair to say that in the last 18 months or so, I havent taken as much care physically of myself as maybe I should have done, but the irony is, since I’ve had the money again to do so, I havent really done a lot of that. Maybe because I now have the challenge of finding the time for everything? And ironically, just as I need to do it, I hit another bottleneck in getting things done. Yes, its called needing to work on Tuesday’s! I know, it means having Saturday’s off, but getting bookings at beauty places on a Saturday, not so easy.

My hair has at least been colored in November, but is now a bit overdue, to put it mildly, but now I’m trying to be tactical. Practically, I want to go to LA in May, freshly blonde. I know, still wont be natural, but…thing is, if I get it done now, its going to (realistically) needed about a month before then. I know, modern stuff, would probably be fine done professionally, but alright, I’m a Yorkshire lass, so spending more money than I have to…snag is it will either have to be this week, or next week, if I want it done before I head South (more on that shortly), as the following 2 Tuesday’s, I’ll be working! Hmm? In truth, I’ll probably end up doing it this week, if I can get an appointment at late notice.

Oh, and my feet are long overdue some TLC, which is my own fault entirely. I used to make my next podiatrist appointment at the previous one, so I had to go, but when I started work, I didnt know how my hours were going to go, and fine, it hasnt happened. Again, I must try and make that appointment on Tuesday at least, though practically, its going to be my holiday week in March before I get chance to get them done, I suspect.

The other thing I do need to get done, even if remarkably I’m not that hairy, is to be fully waxed. Most of which is just to get it done, but the eyebrows need doing for a special reason. But fine, I might as well get everything done in 1 go, so…

Why, you ask? Because next month, at the beginning of my week off in mid March, I’m going down South for what I jokingly call my Jean Harlow makeover. No, sadly not true, though how I’d feel being 25 again, and only 5 foot 2 inches tall, I have no idea. Mind, if anyone should know how to do it, count me in! Just over 2 years ago, as the longer term readers will know, I had some semi permanent make up done by a wonderful lady, and friend, in Newbury. Me, I have a very slight hand tremor, but doing my own make up, no chance. Now I’m due for the top up session! But yes, one of the things to get done, is my eyebrows (not true Harlow, I’m not a fan of that 30’s look), and they need to be hairless!

Yes, I suspect it will hurt after this amount of time, and I know my underarm hair will, but the rest should be fine, I hope? So yes, yet another appointment I’ve got to make!

In theory thats all the ‘treatments’ I need to get sorted, and then continue until the end of the year, when I suspect more serious surgery might be needed with the right knee. No, that I definitely am not looking forward to, but after that tumble, what looked probable, has become almost definite, sadly.

But yes, if any ‘mad scientist’ has a chamber they want to try out, that will literally turn me into Jean Harlow, then fine, call me quick! 😉

The video, as I say, given away in the title, enjoy…

Its time to make your mind up

And to think, at one point I was working out what I was going to blog today, and then I realised what was happening later today, Eurovision! Apologies to any North American readers seeing this, you wont have a clue what you’re missing out on. Mind, nowadays, thats probably for the best. Or is that just because I’m getting old lol?

At this point in time, I have no idea what year I first saw Eurovision. I’m guessing somewhere mid 60’s, but its the old story of, did I see that live, or just years later, and I cant be sure. What I do know, is that by the early 70’s, I was hooked! Whereas nowadays, half the world seemingly takes part in it, including Australia in the last 2 years, but back then, entries were pretty much limited to Western Europe, not how it is now, with just about every possible East European country taking part eagerly.

What I, and just about everyone around at the time remember, is 1974! Yes, some Swedish group that most of Europe had never heard about, called Abba! And yes, the rest of that story is history! In fact, that was probably the height of Eurovision, as about half a dozen entries from that contest went on to find fame. Nowadays, most acts are forgotten in weeks! It could also be said that in a few hours, on a Saturday night, and that was it! Nowadays, we have to have 2 semi finals, and a final, just to include everyone that wants to take part! Yes, the collapse of the Iron Curtain, and even more so, the break up of the Soviet Union has led to that.

Ah, the voting! Well, that has always been amusingly political, but even more so nowadays, given the large clump of ex Soviet countries supporting each other. Oh, and the Scandinavians, and…say no more!

One sad fact this year, for us Brits, even if he hasnt presented it for years, no Terry Wogan! Graham Norton has continued to present it, in a similarly irreverent style, and in truth, thats the best bit nowadays, at least for me. No, I havent see it in years, just tending to watch You Tube on Sunday, for the collection of commentary funny bits, and thats it.

Yes, the UK hasnt won it in a long time. Hardly surprising given the lack of friends in Europe that we have. Oh, and the fact that most of our songs are awful too, in all probability! But yes, its that night when camp fun rules all!

OK, the video. Yes, its a UK winner, and fine, the clue is in the title. Interestingly enough, this was the first time any one heard it, as its the performance from when the UK was deciding its entry for that year.

Now Those Days Are Gone

Hey, a rare treat for you, a blog not about me. I know, I know, thats the idea of these things, but as regular readers know, I like to pick out landmarks, and blog about them accordingly. Yes, I would have blogged this tomorrow, but I already know what I’m doing then, and posting 2 on the same day just seems a bit silly.

A couple of days ago, I heard about one of those little landmarks on the news, that the last Battle of Britain pilot surviving, had died at the age of 99. Considering that so many who fought back then didnt even get to reach 25, thats probably quite a landmark to reach, but still a shame he couldnt make the century. Its funny, it doesnt seem that long ago that we lost the last WW1 veteran, but I know he was far older.

So many died for us in that battle, that we might be free today, and its something that should never be forgotten. I know, it wont be, its only about 3 weeks to Remembrance Sunday after all, and the ceremony never seems to lose its special touch. Sadly we still add to the numbers who died back then, but thankfully not in the huge numbers lost in the 2 World Wars.

Its funny to think, give it another 15-20 years or so, and we will have no survivors who fought in a World War, well, at least I hope thats the case in one sense at least.

So as he departs this world, I’d just like to say thanks, for making the place I live a so much better place.

Its possibly almost trite to include a pop video on something like this, but given the title, and the style of the video, I think it fits.
