Forever Autumn

On this side of the Atlantic at least, its now official, summertime is over. Oh, agreed, summer has been over for a while now, but in these times, we stay on summertime, clock wise, for about 7 months now, but yes, this morning, we got our hour of sleep back, that we gave up in March. Yes, all my American readers, you still have a week to go before you get that, and indeed you start summertime a week, or two before us, so it must be nearly 8 months for you?

Of course, normally, at some point in the year, you get your hour back. Unless, like for me 2 years ago, you’re on the wrong side of the change when the UK change, but have crossed back before the US does. I suppose that strictly I got it, as the flight arrival time would have been different for that week, but of course, it doesnt feel the same that way lol!

No, I’m not going to comment on the winter weather this year, as the so called experts, for the 4th year running, are forecasting a really cold winter. Yes, thats right, the last 3 years, never happened! So…I guess they have to be right sometime, but for now…? Fingers crossed they’re wrong again, especially now I’m an old crock lol!

Of course, not everyone gets a cold winter anyway. Though yes, I’ll be hoping Southern California can get another wet winter, and then hopefully the drought issue can really go away for a few years. And of course, anyone reading this in the Southern Hemisphere is just getting ready for summer!

And agreed, unlike the blog title, and indeed the video (shock horror, lol), it wont be forever autumn, because winter will come around, and then spring, and the clocks will go forward again unless some idiots unleash nuclear war on the world at least!…rolls eyes…

Of course, talking of wars, and the world leads us to tonights video. Thats because this song is actually from the incredible Jeff Wayne musical, The War Of The Worlds. So tonight, you have a choice (assuming you even listen to these pieces?). If you have 13 minutes to spare, then watch this

You get an extra song, lots of Richard Burton, and a great live performance. If you dont have 13 minutes, then just have the main song

Can I have my hour back?

Yes, for those of us in Europe at least, this is the weekend that the clocks ‘spring forward’ into summer time. I know, American readers will be saying they did that a fortnight ago, but for us over here in Europe, tonight marks the moment. So yes, I’m going to lose an hour of sleep tonight, grumble, grumble…

Fine, I know, in theory, we get it back at the end of October (or early November in America?), but just at the moment, that seems a long way off. But ironically, strictly, I never got my hour back last year, or it certainly didnt seem that way at least. In a sense, I arrived back in the UK an hour earlier than normal when I returned from LA, but the actual extra hour in bed, nope!

You might have guessed why. The weekend before I flew back from LA, at the end of October, the UK clocks ‘fell back’ by an hour, but of course, the US moved the clocks back, after I’d flown back, meaning I missed out on that extra hour of sleep. Now I’m going to lose another, ah well…

Another boring detail, this year is the centenary of the first year that the UK changed their clocks, for summer time. I gather it was to aid the war effort, by giving factories an extra hour of light at the end of the day, for workers to produce materials, to help the war effort. I guess nowadays its hard to believe that there was a time when clocks stayed on GMT the whole year round. Nowadays we spend less time on GMT than we do 1 hour ahead of it!

I suppose the only consolation is, that after tonight, I can get back to normal, for 7 months, on time differences to the US, a small blessing at least. Then again, for a week, or maybe 2, I will have to juggle my time differences to the US again. Well, unless, by some miracle, I’m living over there by then! I know, stop laughing…Hey, at present I’d even settle for missing it, because I can afford 4 weeks in Hollywood, which I cant envision at present. Mind, this year, maybe the whole of October wont be a good time to be over there, given it will be just before the election! Still…

Lastly, as always, the video. The other night, I had a brief session on You Tube, of artists who died too young, and not at their own hands. So tonight, one of them seems very apt. This man died at the age of 30, in 1973, when a small plane he was on, crashed soon after take off. What we missed out on, I’m sad to think. Oh, and as much as I can gather, it wasnt too long before that fateful night, that this was filmed.

The End of Summertime

Yes, I know, summer actually officially ended about a month ago, but as this weekend marks the time when the clocks go back, you could say this truly marks the end of summertime. And yes, James, before you say it, I know, the US is a week later than us changing back, but as I’m currently living over here…

I’m not sure whether summer actually ever arrived over here lol!

The other thing that marks the end of summer for me at least, beingĀ a baseball fan, is the start of the World Series, the end of the very long season. And yes, that starts tomorrow, though it will actually be Thursday morning over here when it starts, but all the same. For a while, it looked like we might have some new teams there this year, but all got turned over in what I will term the quarter finals, I think the official name is the divisional series, but anyway…so San Francisco and Detroit get to return again to the final stage. As 5 of the 6 series so far have gone to the last game, we might be going for a while yet. But given the other was a 4-0 for Detroit, maybe not!

I’ve been to San Francisco, twice in fact, and both times ended up in a wonderful baseball park during my stay. Sadly once was a day game, so didnt get to see the sun set over the Bay, while watching the game, because believe me, thats really something! No, never been to Detroit, nor likely to do so, I suspect.

Actually, this was the first year for some time that I didnt get to a live game while over there. I should have done in April, but if you look back through the blog, well, you’ll see I had fun with American Airlines back then, and Sunday was the only Seattle game at home, so… Strangely enough, I wont next year either, unless either Wichita, or Rochester suddenly get a franchise over the winter lol! Thankfully, care of ESPN America over here, I have seen some live baseball this year anyway, including the Mariners once. But yes, its not quite the same thing as seeing it live in the flesh.

November starts a ‘social whirl’ for me, at least by my standards. As already mentioned, I’m off to see a movie on the 1st, something starring Louise Brooks, whoever she may be lol! šŸ˜› Seriously, really looking forward to that. Then later in the month, off to see the musical, Oliver as a birthday treat for someone close to me. Then at theĀ beginning of December, the Works Christmas Dinner. Ah, the busy life of a ‘flapper’, darlings lol! Thats probably it though for a while, unless someone knows something I dont!

Next week actually will bring even more travelling ‘entertainment’ for 9 days, though of course I’ll only be travelling 7 of them. More on that on Thursday’s blog though.

For now, the song is nearly 50 years old, the performance clearly isnt.

Spring is here!

Well, so they tell us, today was officially the spring equinox, so I guess they must be right? Somehow, around here at least, if that was winter, it was definitely quite a tame one. Somehow I suspect we wont get away with it that lightly somehow? The old joke about snow at the start of the cricket season next month, quite possible I suspect?

And yes, the clocks go forward this weekend (in the UK at least, before my North American friends say something) which means the loss of an hour of precious sleep. And yes, I’m working both days this weekend, so I will notice it lol! Thankfully for me at least, not too narrow a split, so I’m sure I’ll survive. And I will get that hour back… eventually! The irony is we spend me more of the year on summer time, than on the natural time zone, but hey, if thats what the politicians want…? I’ve never been one to quite grasp the logic of why we do it, but I suspect most people feel the same way?

Well, in a sense at least, the countdown to my holiday has sort of begun. Had my nails painted (or more correctly, gelled) today, and the next time that will happen is the day before my holiday, appointment already made. Will get the full work over then, including waxing one or two places, but not anything too painful lol. Plus the much needed massage and facial, a girl has to look her best after all. I need to get my hair coloured as well, I’m amazed how well the extensions are holding up though, I must say.

This holiday will have at least one original moment, the need to use the ladies toilets while out, assuming I can actually find any public toiletsĀ in the US! Now I’m wearing the enhancers full time, any possibility of choice goes straight out the window lol! But as I seem to pass to most Americans, I’m probably worrying far more than I need to anyway! Distinct likelihood I will be flying wearing them too, as it seems there is no problem getting through airport security wearing them, according to Manchester Airport, and the TSA. I do need a new pair though, so ideally I can get them before I go, pack them in the case, and wear the old pair for flying, just in case anything does crop up. Last year I flew as a relatively flat chested lady, whereas this year, a bit more buxom lol!

Back to work tomorrow, so I dont quite know when the next blog will be, but currently the shifts arent so horrendous, so I might get a chance before Monday, next day off. Mind, given how many viewings I’m getting here of late, maybe I shouldnt worry so much about that?

Lastly, the video. Sorry, its a bit old, 82 years old to be exact. But I typed Spring is here on You Tube, and this is the first thing that came up. Besides, its from an era that a flapper should feel at home with, and so…

Oh, and talking of that. I had one of those style test things sent to me in an email by TK Maxx. Guess what, I came up as a Gatsby Girl, shock horror! Rofl šŸ˜‰

An extra hour

Yes, tonight is the night that the clocks go back, signifying the end of summertime, though weather wise I think it might already have been over! Hopefully given my comments of late about lack of sleep, and lousy shift splits, I intend to sleep through my extra hour tonight, I think I need it!

As seems to happen every time of late that we do so, there seems to be all sort of talk about moving our time zone forward one hour, a move I see as the most stupid thing possible. Maybe someone should tell our idiots in government that we are in this time zone for a good reason, it fits in with our longitude, but thats clearly far too sensible for some! They actually tried it back in the 60’s, it didnt work, or last then, and I dont think it would work now. But anyway…

In the ‘old days’ it used to be the case that people rarely left their home area in their whole lives, and I’m feeling a slight deja vu over that. Since the clocks went forward, I’ve left West Yorkshire…4 times! Alright, 2 of those were transatlantic, 1 was Belfast, and the other was all the way to Manchester! A whole 35 minutes by train lol! And given its Trans Pennine Express, that was not a high speed one!

But those 3 longer trips were all good ones, visited 3 wonderful cities, only one new one, but hadnt been to the other 2 (Belfast city centre, that is) for a very long time. Got to meet some really nice people, again some for the first time, but others I’d seen on my previous trip to Belfast (yes, then I went to Stormont ground, but not into town) as well.

Maybe I’m methodical, maybe I’m just too practical, but the 2 big holidays for next year are already settled on, the April one will be booked in the next few days too. The September one will only be a delayed booking because I need to wait for next seasons NFL schedule to sort it out. Is it terrible that I’m already thinking aboutĀ April 2013 lol?

The video seems apt for tonight, one of this artists lesser songs sales wise, but I do like it. Hopefully, so will you.
