Sorry, or thankfully, depending on your views, you’re going to have to do without a video with the blog, due to the fact I’m away for Christmas, and dont have headphones to check its working OK.
Back in March 1983, I moved away to Somerset, my first real job away from home, in a small town I’d never visited before, named Yeovil. In June 1983, there was a General Election, one of Thatchers numerous successes. But lets not talk about her.
In those days, there wasnt the millions of betting markets that there are now, due to the lack of internet and stuff, so unless it was a standard market, the big name bookmakers wouldnt bet on it. Anyway, there was talk around town about a candidate standing at the forthcoming election, for the Liberal Party, named Paddy Ashdown. What you have to consider at this time, Yeovil was a nice safe Conservative seat, so…
There was a wonderful man, named Tony Woods, who had an independent bookmakers up the road from where I worked. Anyway, he decided to quote a price on this young whippersnapper (well, 42, by politician standards…fairly young) for the next General Election to take the seat. Yes, as history shows, it cost him a bit of money, lol.
Paddy was still MP for Yeovil when I left the town about 16 years later. He hadnt been my MP since 1988, when I moved across the border to live in West Dorset, but he was still the MP where I worked at least. He finally retired from the position in 2001, but the Liberal/Liberal Democrat vote held up until recently anyway.
I only saw Paddy Ashdown once. He walked into the Liberal Club in town, when I was there, playing darts, and that was the only time I ever actually saw him. But I know he did a lot of good for Yeovil, and his constituents. He continued to do good for the country after his retirement, and moved into the house of Lords. Of course, he also led the Liberals for a very long period of time in the interim, some of their more successful years.
Yes, he passed away in the last couple of day, at the age of 77. Maybe we never knew each other, but both of us let Yeovil leave its mark on us back in 1983.
Well, I must admit, when I avoided discussing the Brexit vote on Sunday, I wasnt expecting this position, though in truth, I’m not totally surprised it did. Yes, the vote that was due to happen in Parliament today, over the Brexit agreement was cancelled yesterday, when I think even Theresa May realised it was going to end in crushing defeat, and there wasnt a lot she could do about that. The irony of this being that she cant get the votes from the rabid Brexiteers of her party (not extreme enough), or those who wanted to remain (not a sane deal), which just sums it up
So, to quote the blog title, what happens now? In truth, the only answer I can offer, no idea! The media seem nearly as clueless as the politicians on the matter, as I’ve heard answers from every point on the spectrum from Brexit being cancelled, to just crashing out of the EU, and pure chaos ensuing. Or, of course, just about anywhere in between!
It seems May is going to try to renegotiate, even though the EU have clearly said thats not going to happen. Lets face it, why should they want to offer us the most perfect deal, its not in their best position to do so. I’m going to manage to stay neutral on this for one good reason, neither of the major parliamentary parties seem to have half an idea on how to resolve this matter! I also feel less guilty if I do slip up, as I’ve seen 2 colleagues posting decidedly non politically neutral postings on the event today on social media, anyway, lol! 😛 Before anyone says this is anti Conservative bias, I’m not a fan of Corbyn either!
Oh, and to put it into context, without mentioning how I voted again, you could always just look back to my blogs, at the time of the vote (pre Civil Service job days, so could comment) to see how I voted, lol. 😉
The interesting (and possibly fun) thing is, that at some point, May needs to put something to a vote, and given the wide spectrum of feeling in her own party, and the fact that the opposition just want to vote against her regardless, it looks like she will lose the vote at some point, assuming she hasnt been dethroned by her party before then, and nothing would surprise me at present.
My dream outcome, that the office lottery syndicate win the jackpot before March 29, I can declare retirement, and hurry off somewhere hot all the year round, and yes, I might have been there recently, lol. Both so I’m out the country should chaos break out (and medicines is one big issue that concerns me a lot), and so that I can retire comfortably in the EU sun! Well, unless some wealthy American in a warm state goes crazy, and marries me, lol, anyway. Or I find a ‘sugar daddy (or mummy) who wants to set me up somewhere suitably warm. Think the former is more likely than the last two, and thats saying something!
Oh, and two additional amusing moments with a political touch today. Firstly, Theresa May went to see Angela Merkel in Germany today about the current chaos. Funny point, her car door wouldnt open, and let her out. Eventually she did get out, but fine, the film is all over Social Media now, hilarious stuff.
Secondly, in the US, Trump was made to look the fool he is today, when meeting with a pair of leading Democrats, over his desire to build a wall between the US, and Mexico. Yes, he made the threat to shut down the US if he didnt get his way, like a very spoilt child, and they managed to get it recorded for posterity. Way things are going, with luck, some time in the near future there will be a wall around him, a prison wall!
Fine, lets call it quits here, and hope its UK neutral enough, lol. So, video time. A song from Evita, with a very apt line, repeated numerous times.
Its a depressing thing when you can look back on a Republican President of the past, and think that in truth, maybe he wasnt that bad? Maybe thats because of the current man in the role, he can make anyone look good. It was summed up by a picture from the recent G20 summit, where every leader, apart from himself, chose to keep away from him, says it all. But no, this blog isnt about that narcissist!
The previous 2 Republican Presidents in the US had the same surname. Probably because they were related, and but for the middle initial, both were known as George Bush. The senior Bush (1989-1992) presidency has now literally come to a close, as he passed away in the last few days, at the grand age of 94. One worthy note, he was the President who survived to the oldest age, though Jimmy Carter will be in a position to take over that role in March, assuming he lives that long, and there currently seems no reason why he wouldnt?
I dont actually have any lingering memories of his presidency, whether that be for good, or for bad, no idea? What I do remember, he seemed to be better than Reagan, but thats a bit like saying anyone would be better than Trump, maybe?
But yes, apart from all my growing health issues, it makes you feel old that a President you remember serving in the role, dies at that sort of age. Yes, old father time catches up with us all, and seems to be creeping up on me, for sure!
Anyway, due respects, and RIP, George Bush, at least I dont remember anything that bad that you did, and that counts for something?
OK, video time. No, I never know what to put up at times like this, so lets go with a classic song by someone else with the Bush surname, Kate. Probably my favourite song of hers of all time.
OK, fine, they think its all over, well it pretty much is now, lol. No, I’m not talking about the current government, though that might yet prove to be apt. But being strictly politically neutral on UK matters…well…? No, seriously, I mean my little break in the sun.
Of course, the sixty four million dollar question is, has the break in the sun done my back any good? Well, I’ve been taking less pills than usual, so I guess thats a good sign, but how long the effects will really last when I get back to the UK, who knows? I certainly havent missed not hearing all about the chaos at home over Brexit, and other stuff, for sure.
Yesterday, I headed to Vila Real De Santo Antonio as planned, and had a look around. In a sense, its more my sort of town than Faro would be, more peaceful, laid back, and dare I say it, old fashioned? Sadly I didnt get to Spain, as I reached the ferry terminal after town, and lunch, to see it pulling out for Ayamonte, across the river, in a different country, and given the next one wasnt for another hour in the off season, I didnt wait. That would have put me on the 2.30 ferry across, so earliest back at 4.00, and then needing to get back to Monte Gordo, all would have got a bit late for me. Maybe another time, maybe not, who knows?
Today, as I have done most days (gentle exercise, which is good) I took my stroll down along the front, and down part of the boardwalk, over the beach. I did some shopping, a little bit more than I’d planned, but nothing too dramatic. Oh, I got one of those coats, seems they had a zip up version as well for same price, so deal done! So I guess at some point soon I’ll need to go into work looking like a 30’s film star, lol. No, its silly really, I dont need a winter coat, but… Yes, I found the PIN for my credit card, but then found they only took cash, no cards, aargh!
I must admit, if, as I hope, I can retire somewhere with all year round warmth, then Monte Gordo has done a pretty good publicity job this week. I know its off season, but its quieter than the more popular end of the Algarve, its pleasantly warm, even in mid November (70 today), and cost of living is definitely lower than the UK too. But whether I will be in a position to make it happen, who knows? Will it even be possible once we’ve left the EU to move out here easily? Rolls eyes… Who me, a remain vote, well, you might think that, but I couldnt possibly say! 😛
Last amusing note, before I close for this holiday. There is a spa at the hotel I’m staying at. I did notice on their website that the spa does those body wrap things, and I’ve always fancied that. Go into my cocoon as the ugly caterpillar, come out the beautiful butterfly, yeah, I wish! So today, with budget sorted, I went to see how much it was. Yes, as I expected, way above what I had left, 80 Euros, for admittedly 80 minutes of pure pampering heaven. So, a fair price, but… To be honest, it was pretty much all above my budget, but I guess a 4 star hotel with spa (I’d say closer to 3, but anyway…), thats probably going to be the case. The thing was, they had a special offer for a hot stone massage, at 49 Euros. for 50 minutes of pampering, which I could just about scrape together. But anyway, being practical, I checked on Google, and it said not advised for people with Osteoporosis issues, so I ended up passing. Probably would have been fine, but better safe than sorry with boring old me!
It was funny tonight at dinner, I got asked why I was drinking Coke, when everybody else was drinking wine, so I explained about the painkillers, and all that. Again I wonder if thats just me being extra cautious, as I know people taking those pills, and drinking booze, and being fine, but…I am being boring, lol!
Tonights video is a song that might have passed most people by, especially as its now 33 years old! The late, great, Kirsty MacColl for your delight
Oh, and as a test to see who actually reads these things, given its Transgender Awareness Week. Yes, somethings been annoying me this week, and I’ve decided he’s got to go! Its fair to say, dont get excited, its not going to happen before retirement, as I’d need way too much time off work otherwise, to get it done before then. Yes, been looking at clingy dresses again, lol, and the desire to wear them, and the current impracticality of doing so. Latex would be fun, but at 66, I dont think so! Of course, the back could have a major relapse over the winter, I need to retire on disability grounds, but until then…?
Might give me a clue as to who ‘likes’ the blog without reading it, lol. 😉
How do you like your love? Probably not with me, lol, at my age, and pre threatened possible surgery!
Oh, and before anyone assumes otherwise, this blog has nothing to do with sex, of any kind. Seriously, baseball, in fact!
Yes, the regular season ends tonight, or should do, and you would think a 162 game season could just about sort out any issues, wouldnt you, in terms of teams qualifying for the playoffs, and the like? Well, 2 teams will only play 161 (Miami & Pittsburgh had a cancellation earlier this week, and as neither team are competitive, not being played now), but its possible that 4 teams will need to play 163!
Yes, with one game to go, the top of the NL Central is a tie between the Chicago Cubs, and the Milwaukee Brewers, and the NL West is the same between Colorado Rockies, and some team named the Los Angeles Dodgers, anyone ever heard of them? 😉 As it happens, all 4 teams are in the playoffs, the difference is that the 2 divisional winners wont have to play in a one off wild card game, before starting the Divisional series.
Of course, it could be that in each case, one team will win tonight, one will lose, and we’ll have the first night with no baseball since just after the All Star Game tomorrow night. Thats right, playoffs start on Tuesday, with first of said wild card games! Equally, we could have 2 extra games, with plenty at stake.
The good news for me (though fine, I’d rather see Dodgers win division tonight), is that if there is 1 match, it will take place just after 9 pm my time, tomorrow night, by which time, I’ll be home from work, though pretty sure I wont see the end. 2 games, first would start just after 6 pm, so I’ll catch the end of it at least, buses, and back permitting. Or, I wont see any baseball, because it all gets settled tonight! In case anyone was wondering, all games on last day are played at more or less the same time, so no knowing what you need to do, or anything like that! 😉
Right, end of baseball rah-rah stuff, unless someone wants to buy me a Dodgers cheerleaders outfit, lol. No, seriously, you shouldnt! 😛
The other thing that has amused me today, has also come out from the US. This Kavanaugh hearing stuff. No, I’m not a ghastly Trump fan, but I seem to have appealed to more than a few, just for saying that Senators supporting him (no, not me) shouldnt be confronted in a physical way, just over their views re him. Me, cant stand the man, but anyway… Of course, the thing that amuses me the most, is that these Conservative, racist, right wing folk would probably ‘hate’ me if they knew I was Trans, Lesbian, and had centre left leanings lol. But because of one post…rolls eyes…
Fine, anyone around my age, or older, might have worked out tonights video already! Youngsters wont have a clue, and my right wing likers will hate her, because she was a porn star, as well as singer, but anyway…
How do I like my love? Well, about the only way I’d like it, is in a sex doll body, just for the research, and experience, lol!…angelic look…
I suppose my readers might have worked out by now, that I’m not a fan of Trump. I know, shock horror, and all that. One of the criticisms that so many have made of the Republican party, quite justifiably on the whole, is that no one has had the courage to stand up to his comments, and crazy tweets, but there was at least one man of whom that couldnt be said.
I dont know what John McCain did to annoy Trump, other than not fawning over the ‘Emperor’ and his ‘New Clothes’, but seemingly something did. I’m pretty sure it was the fact that he did tell Trump what he thought about matters, and from time to time, disagreed with him totally. Anyway, for that fact alone, regardless of his political views, I’d have to like him. Maybe it was the fact that he actually served in the military, with honor, something Trump was determined to avoid.
I’m not going to snatch lots of stuff from Wikipedia about the guy to impress you about him, you can do that yourself, if you so desire. In truth, the first time I really came across him, was 2008, when he was the Republican nomination, who lost to Obama. Of course, I had a couple of reasons to want Obama to win, but in a sense, after Bush, he did seem a Republican candidate I could have lived with, but anyway…
Of course, one of the things he did, after falling out with Trump, was to vote down the mess that was the Trump plan to dump Obamacare, in favor of something that would line his friends in the medical industry’s pockets! I’m not saying that compared to our system, Obamacare was perfect, but it was better than previously, and its better than anything Trump wants for non wealthy people in the US. He did that, at a time when he was already critically ill, quite a stand to take.
Anyway, a couple of days he decided to stop fighting the brain cancer he was suffering, and take his chance in the next world. Unsurprisingly, it wasnt long between that decision, and his sad death. I dont know, maybe its because he was an old school Republican, maybe its because he was prepared to say what he thought, not just toe the party line that endeared him to me, but regardless of all that, RIP, John McCain.
OK, the video. 35 years ago, or so, OMD brought out an album that was totally ahead of its time in complexity, Dazzle Ships. I must admit, at that time, I probably didnt get it either, but its one of those things that has developed a fame after its time. I’m not saying I get it entirely, even now, but with the modernity of music, it makes a lot more sense. This wont be everyone’s cup of tea, but then again, neither was McCain, and indeed, neither is Trump!
Now I know this might look like politics, but it isnt! Over here in the UK, on Thursday, most of us (if not all?) get to vote in local council elections, and in all honesty, on the whole, turnout isnt all that great. Which is a shame, really, in truth.
Women, just remember that a mere century ago, we werent even allowed the vote, only men could make that ‘complicated’ decision, and all that stuff. Then WW1 came along, along with the whole Suffragette movement, and the rest, as they say, is history. A decade or so later, all women of legal voting age at the time, finally got the vote. Yes, there were restrictions for the first decade or so, over here, even then.
So given all their brave efforts, especially those who gave their lives for the cause, shouldnt we all go out and vote on Thursday, just to show it was worth their while. No, I dont care who you vote for, some of you will probably feel the same way politically as me, numerous others wont, but thats not the point of this piece, as for once, I dont care how you vote!
And fine, given that the stats suggest to me that I have a crazy following in the US, I’m going to say the same now, for women in the US, for November, go out and do the same! Maybe your 2 party system makes it easier to work out who I would vote for over there, but thats beside the point, this piece is about the emancipation, and the right to vote for women, and its centenary, in UK at least.
And to all readers in those countries, of either gender, you really ought to go out and vote. It may, or may not make a difference (around here, very doubtful), but at least then you have the right to complain about what our council leaders do if you dont like it. Well, unless you voted for them, in which case… Of course, if you didnt bother to vote…rolls eyes…?
So, this Thursday, or whatever date it is in your country, ladies, just go out and vote, and make those who gave their lives to give us this chance, proud of us. OK, enough said, I hope?
Video time. This song is over 50 years old, but hey, its still younger than me, just. And hey, its where I got the play on the blog title from, so…
Yes, I’m doing UK Politics, ooh! But before anyone gets over excited, or panicked, its not modern politics, and very strictly its not even a matter of politics. And oh, its an event that happened 100 years ago today!
Yes, on February 6th, 1918, for the first time, an act was put forward to allow women to vote. In truth, it wasnt the complete victory for equality, that would only come about 10 years later, but as a day when the right to vote was first offered to women, this is the anniversary one.
As I say, hollow victory. Whereas at the same time, all men of 21 or over was given the right to vote, only women of 30 and over, and who had to live in the same property as a man who could vote, or who was certified in some way (remembering that at this time, most womens education was inferior to that given to men) were able to cast a vote.
From there, as I say, it took until 1928 before all women aged 21 and over (the voting age at that time) had the legal right to vote.
Of course there are a few famous Suffragette stories, one of them being of course the sad fate of Emily Davison, who threw herself under the hooves of the King’s Derby runner in 1913, and died. Its fair to say we will never know whether this was a deliberate act, and if it was, its hard to believe she could pick out one horse at the speed they would have been travelling at. The fact that she had purchased a return rail ticket, and had tickets for an event that evening would lead you to assume she expected to go home that night. In truth, the answer to these, and other questions are never going to be answered now.
The biggest question is, but for WW1, would it have happened when it did? Its fair to say that the sudden need for women to do all the work at home in England let to a change in authority attitudes, and this may have been an agreed compromise, to keep everyone happy? If not for that, when would women have got the right to vote, who knows? I’d like to think it would have happened at some point, but exactly when…?
But today, lets just remember all those brave women, from so long ago, who helped to give women the right to vote.
The video, there is a clue in the blog title, and its why 1 word is in brackets, shall we say? Paul McCartney made some great videos back then, and this was one of them.
Much though I hate doing politics, there are times when events happen that just cannot be ignored.
Yes, this weekend in Charlottesville, is the subject I cant ignore. I probably would have diplomatically avoided it, but for the death of one person, ran down by one of the extreme right wingers involved in this ghastly event, and the way that Trump has tried to avoid blaming the ghastly right wing people involved in this, because lets face it, he pretty much supports them! It seems that even after being advised to condemn them, that he couldnt do it! Too busy trying to start a nuclear war with North Korea to care, I guess? Sorry, but thats two people with the IQ, and temperament of infants, playing with very dangerous toys!
My sympathies to the family of poor woman who died, and to all those injured by that idiot yesterday. I only hope he gets punished as he should, but with Trump, and his right wing pals in control, I fail to be convinced of that. But I hope its the case.
The other depressing incident I have to report today, revolves around the fans of a certain NFL team I sort of follow, the Buffalo Bills. Though how much longer I want to follow them, if this is the way the other fans think, I’m not sure?
Yesterday, Marshawn Lynch of the Oakland (for now at least) Raiders, sat through the National Anthem, in support of Colin Kaepernick, amongst others. Kaepernick being the quarterback who knelt through said Anthem last year, in protest at police violence, and has since been seemingly black balled by every NFL team because of it. Given some of the names getting contracts as back up quarterbacks, there is no other good reason, I have to say. Let me add, that its not the first time Lynch has done this, but…some would make you believe it was.
Anyway, if I say that one of the more ‘polite’ comments (and sadly, I’m not being facetious) involved Lynch being so filled with lead that they couldnt put him back together to bury him, it shows what a depressing state of events is prevalent in parts of the US at present. Yes, seriously, there is a difference between being proud of your country, and being a dangerous person, and too many seem to have crossed the line to the latter, now.
No, I’m not a lily livered leftie, before you ask. I see myself as a sane moderate, but yes, some of these people scare me, a lot!
Fine, video time. A song about a massacre by the KKK, surely not? Yes, you got it! An OMD song that not many will know, for sure.
Yes, let me say I was saddened greatly by the news that came out of Finsbury Park in the last couple of days, in a similar way to how I felt after the London Bridge incident, before anyone points out that I didnt comment on that. Sadly, when I only have time to do 2 blogs a week, and other things do happen in my life, some things get thought about, but not mentioned here, and that was one of them. Add in the Tower block fire last week, and London isnt having a good time of late, lets face it.
Equally, can I say that I wasnt entirely surprised when that horrific incident in Finsbury Park happened, because I wasnt. Such is political, and religious extremism at the far end of the spectrum of late, that no, I wasnt surprised when a white supremacist type decided to take a stand for himself over the matter. Thankfully, both sets of incident are few, and far between (very much so, in fact), but the press, and TV tend to over focus when they do. When parades of thousands of Muslims, protesting against terrorism happen, they have a tendency to ignore, as it just doesnt suit the underlying tendencies of too many in power, trying to scare people nowadays, lets face it.
I only hope that this can be it, that people can see sense, and we have no more retaliation, from either side. I know, as John Lennon said, ‘You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one’, at least I hope I’m not. Unfortunately, the people I’m appealing to with this piece are probably the ones least likely to read this, but I can hope that in some way, the message can get out. Yes, I know, I’m a very liberal type, but I think that most people, with a cool head would be able to see that just continuing the violence isnt a great idea, from either side.
So all I am saying, to quote another Lennon song, is to ‘Give peace a chance’, please. And yes, let me add that if there was a way I could wear a burqa/burka (I’ve seen it spelt both ways) in support of my Muslim friends, without it being religiously offensive, I’d happily do so. I dont deny it, I’ve seen women wearing it in Bradford a number of times, and wondered what it was like. But no, I dont want to offend anyone, all the same. But if the chance arose…?
Right, the video. No John Lennon, no Dusty Springfield, which a few might have thought of, from the blog title. Instead, a live Police classic from 2008!
