Holiday memories

I had originally planned to do this on Sunday, but something more important came up, lol! Still, as not much has happened since then, you can have it tonight!

Once I started work, back in 1974, my initial break at independence was going on holiday without family. Or, to put it wholesomely by that time, not with my mother, and whichever boyfriend she was on at the time. Well, one eventually became her second husband, and that marriage lasted nearly as long as the first (until his death), so it worked out in the end, but anyway…

In truth, back then, I didnt get into the early package holidays jetting off abroad, seeing that as something more for families, than single people, even then probably, thoroughly confused by their gender, sex, and stuff like that! Hey, I was 28 before I lost my virginity, thats how confused by it all that I was!

Now, being a non driver, and very single, my options were pretty limited. Apart from a few rail rover excursions, some of the journeys of which I still treasure to this day, the main option open to me was coach holidays. Ah, the delight of single room supplements first entered my life! On most of these, I was the odd one out, being the only one not at least in their 50’s, if not older! Well, there might have been one or two others, but not many!

Anyway, I survived the experiences, though about the only surviving memory I have of them, is nothing to do with the coaches, its one I’ve mentioned before, I was on one of those trips, in a hotel in Arrochar, the night Elvis Presley died. The morning after, the woman outside the hotel mourning the fact will now almost certainly stay with me till the day I die!

However, to digress…Saturday morning, I got off the bus in town to change buses, to go to work, and what did I see? Yes, a Shearings coach, with numerous pensioners loading up their cases for a holiday away somewhere. That was when it hit me, thats probably me, in not too many more years, assuming my body lasts that long, and I’m not putting good money on that! I can already face the fact that Transatlantic flightwise, my back has only got so many trips left in it, and after that, when this passport runs out in 2025, well…

Of course, the irony is, much though I was, after a few years of those trips, sick of the sight of motorway service stations, and tourists shops, I now havent seen many in about 40 years! I suspect, like me, they may have changed a bit by then. So yes, seeing my future, and going full circle like that, strange to think! Ah well…

Of course, ‘Dr Frankenstein’ might have taken me off to a nice lab by then, and turned me into a ‘whole new woman’ but I wont hold my breath on that one, knowing my luck!

Right, video time. Its not the song I was originally considering for this, but then one of the music regulars of my childhood passed away at 74. So, in tribute to Chas Hodges (of Chas & Dave fame), and coach trips, I present…

And yes, I went to Margate as a child, many times, though by train!

I am the Easter Bunny!

Oh fine, given that today was not only Easter Sunday, but April Fools Day, I thought I’d better come up with a silly title for today’s blog! Mind, if someone wants to get me a suitable bunny outfit (either of the animal, or if feeling brave, the Playboy kind), then I’ll wear it, and have a picture (or more) taken of me wearing it, and post them on here! I think the full cover animal type bunny outfit would be wiser at my age, but each to their own lol! Cant say that the other wouldnt be a lot of fun to wear, mind!

Seemingly this is the first time that these 2 dates have coincided for 62 years (Thanks, Google), though it happened 4 times last century in total. I’ll try not to repeat this blog in 11 years time, when this is next due to happen, even if I am still alive by then, but not making any promises on that!

In truth, I remember some great April Fools Day spoofs on TV when I was a child, including the famous (at the time at least, probably not now, more than 50 years on), of the pasta growing on trees in Italy being harvested. Yes, now I know how pasta is made, but as a 5 year old child, who had never seen the stuff before, I didnt even realize at the time that it was an April Fool, and not a genuine news article.

Since then, its fair to say there have been some that were almost believable, some that clearly weren’t, and all degrees in between. I saw one today, one of these hotel search websites. Advertised a mobile room service, in what looked like a standard camper van, which apparently was a fake. But if you think about it, a mobile bed service, for people who have had too much to drink to go home safely, makes a lot of sense really? Oh, and if some rich entrepreneur type sees this, sets up such an idea, and makes his millions, I want my cut lol!

But yes, given the chance of me still doing this in 11 years has to be slim, at best, if anyone wants to April Fool me (belatedly) by making me have photos taken in any kind of bunny outfit, you’d better get to it this year. Be bad enough at 60, but at 71, seriously…?

OK, video time. Closest I could think of, relating to a bunny was this!

The social calendar just gets busier!

Yes, about this time of year, even an old maid like myself can find her social calendar filling up. No, not hitting the town every night, heaven forbid, apart from that not being my style, I couldnt stand the pace at my age anyway!

Irony, the first thing that happened was actually an expected date disappearing from the diary, as the place we were planning to go out for dinner on Christmas Day has just raised their prices too high, and we decided not to book. A shame in a sense, last year I took it as a second chance to wear the Dinner dress, but I can fully understand why we arent bothering, and agree with the decision.

Still, there is always Eric’s birthday meal to look forward to (Sunday, in fact), and I suspect I will dress up for that. No, not the new dress, I really want to christen that at the work dinner, but I have a, err, few other options anyway. Oh, and of course that works dinner on December 5th.

But then the list starts to grow. Scrooge, with Tommy Steele, is currently on in Leeds, and as part of the birthday celebrations, we are off to the theatre next Monday. No show on a Sunday, thats why! Thankfully I’m off Monday and Tuesday next week, so no problem on my part. No, probably not a dress, nice top and skirt, I suspect, but dont quote me on that!

And now, there’s more!…Unofficially at this point. Though given who I’ve got the info from, I believe its true.

About 3 weeks ago or so, we had an email come round at work, with a contest for 5 pairs of tickets for the UK Snooker Final at York next month. Now those who know me well, know I never win anything. But, I knew the answer (alright, I googled it to make sure, but…), so I tried my luck. Given everything, and the fact that it finished at the weekend, and I hadnt heard a word, I assumed I hadnt won…again. But then, talking to ‘A’ at work tonight over Facebook, I joke about it, and he sends back a message to say I need to get the ‘glad rags’ ready, I’m a winner. Check work email box, as I hadnt looked since this morning, nothing. But it seems he’s seen it on the Managers monitor, and so…No, I’m not going to expect anything, until I hear officially, but hey, wow!

The offer actually includes travel and accommodation, presumably the latter on the Sunday night, as it will probably finish quite late. But, its only 30 miles from here, but lets see where we are staying first! 😉 I’m thrilled for Eric in all honesty, a bigger snooker fan than me (though I do like the sport), and a chance for him to go to a final, is just so lovely. How will I dress, no idea, have to think that over. But cant see me being too ‘radical’, given its on TV and all that. But something nice, oh absolutely.

Right, the video. Warning, the song is an absolute shocker, so anyone with delicate tastes should not listen! Shows how long ago this was, most of this bunch just commentate nowadays, and I have no idea what happened to Tony Meo!
