Its early in the morning, right? Well, I hope most of my readers spotted that line coming at least? And yes, I can claim to be a Broadway Baby last night, even if it refers to the shopping centre in Bradford of that name, not the more famous street in New York! And no, I wasnt that early in the morning, though someone thought maybe I was, more on that shortly?
Last night was the works Christmas dinner, as mentioned in the previous blog, and 10 ladies headed into a local casino, to have a meal, and some fun. No, not that sort of fun, lol! 😛
The meal, and company was very good, I have to say, was a great evening. Lastly, we all headed for the casino, to play our free chip, and see if we could win our fortunes, on the spin of a roulette wheel. No, I didnt, and indeed, at time of leaving, no one had. Some were making a profit, but I lost on my first, and probably last spin on a roulette wheel in my life. It was amazing how many chips some seemed to be gambling on the spin of a wheel, but given I had no idea of the values of the chips, it might not have been as much as it seemed?
Anyway, shortly after that, this little ‘Broadway Baby’ slipped back to her hotel, and slept all night. Well, with the painkillers I take, thats not hard, but anyway… No, I didnt find a wealthy ‘sugar daddy, or mummy’, no great shock there! So, given I didnt bother to take my laptop with me, I got up, took my pills, had breakfast, then headed for home.
OK, we’ll get to the funny moment now. I hopped on the bus to come home, dressed in my (very fake) fur coat, with an overnight bag, and a glint in my eye. Oh, and hair only roughly tousled, as some silly blonde forgot to take a comb with her, so I had that tousled, fresh out of bed look to my hair.
To be fair, the driver never said a word as he gave me my weekly pass that I’d purchased from him, but the look said it all, and I was more than happy to play him along. 😉 Yes, wicked minx, had a saucy night, and got up too quickly to do her hair, lol. I didnt think the coat looked that real, but well, maybe it does?
I played it up beautifully, giving him the cutest, “Thank you.” as I got off the bus in Huddersfield. Yes, why not play along if he thought I’d been to see ‘Daddy’ overnight for some fun? Of course he might have been thinking I’d been earning money in another way overnight that would give me the ‘fresh out of bed’ look, who knows, lol?
So, video time. This song has actually been in a few movies in its time, but this is the longest section I can find, featuring both song, and dance. 42nd Street, its actually about a 13 and a half minute number, and yes, Clara Johnson was dancing on that movie. Gold Diggers of 1935 too, she was there. But longest snippet I can find of those is just some of the dance, just under 3 minutes long. So I’ll roll with the 1951 Doris Day version, from the film of the same name.
I must admit that before last year, at 58, I was sort of assuming that my studying days were over. Not that I minded, in truth, as though my brain is still reasonably functional (or at least I like to think it is), the desire to study, to improve myself was pretty much gone. Even allowing for the fact that retirement is now 8 years away for me (when I started working, it would be 9 more months!), I’m definitely looking for the quiet life en route to retirement, even if 1 or 2 at work have hinted that I should consider promotion in the future, but anyway…I might, OK? And if anyone wants to convince me, by interesting methods, then fine, I’d definitely go along with that! 😀
Yes, my last time at school, college, or the like, for studying purposes, was 1976! Yes, I really am that old! I did an accounts course, at a college, from my first job, which I started in 1974, and that was it. Until now…
The Civil Service department I work for, are keen on their staff taking apprenticeship courses, relating to our work. Before you say anything, I fully approve of that idea, but…for those freshly out of, or still in their youth, its a great idea. They have a long working life ahead of them, and anything they can do to improve themselves for their future work career, brilliant! But when you’re 59, looking gently in the distance to a quiet route to retirement, doing an apprenticeship, well…?
Lets be honest, when it comes to things Mathematical, I’m an old fogey! I grew up on yards, feet, and inches, not meters, centimeters, and the like! So yes, when it comes to comparing diagrams that have 1 measurement in centimeters, another in millimeters, plus meters as well…yes, honey, I’m lost, to quote a Dooleys song. No, thats not the video, btw. 😛
And yes, I can get by in basic English, the other part of my course at present, but after 43 years, expecting me to know the difference between using colons, and semi colons, and other stuff like that, no chance! As to story publishing, its why I have a wonderful friend edit my stories for publication, because I’ve forgotten about most of those rules over the years. Also, as most buyers of eBooks are in North America, he adapts my spelling to suit that market, for when I forget!
So yes, its safe to say that after 43 years, I no longer want to be a studious ‘teachers pet’, but guess I will have to do my best, all the same? But enjoy it, no chance! Yes, I working, in between calls yesterday on my studying, and I was more mentally exhausted at the end of it, than a string of non stop calls! Which is what I will probably get tomorrow, as we will be very short handed at work, due to Eid being celebrated.
Talking of which, may I wish Eid Mubarak to any of my readers who will be celebrating tomorrow, or even some today, depending on location.
Video time. I might not want to be Teachers Pet, but Doris Day did, back in 1958. Its funny seeing the screen shots, as of course most Gable films I’ve seen were made about 20 years earlier, or more! Interesting fact, Gable worked on Jean Harlow’s last film, and also worked on Monroe’s last movie, nearly 25 years later. Another connection between the 2 platinum blondes!
OK, amusing story time.
When I got back to work last week, as well as being told of the forthcoming change of team at work, which though I dont mind it in the slightest, I’d still quite enjoy it if someone convinced me about it, using this machine…
Yes, I know, I wish!
The second thing that was waiting for me, in the form of a piece of paper on my desk, is something from the daily free newspaper over here, known as the Metro, an article called Rush Hour Crush. Yes, it is as awful as it sounds, judging by the posts in the one left on my desk, but anyway…A couple of people especially, know of a certain bus journey crush I have, and it was placed there because of her, and me. In truth, I have no idea why I crush on her, because strictly, she isnt my type. She’s very slim, pretty much flat chested, and non exceptional looks. But, but, she just has something I adore, though thats a mystery ingredient, for sure. But anyway…
Last night, for the first time in weeks, I saw her. Mainly because I didnt see her just before I went on holiday, or the first week I was back, plus that 2 week gap, so…it was a treat when I saw her at the bus stop, and then realized there were no double seats left downstairs, so yes, she went upstairs, I was downstairs, and I’m not that predatory! Fine, I’m not in the slightest predatory, so I had to settle for 2 brief sightings.
Anyway, in line with those Crush postings, I jokingly posted this on my Facebook page, as they always love to know when I see her
Cute, slim blonde on 7.20 363 to Bailiff Bridge tonight. Coffee, or more?
Tall, butch looking blonde
I know, silly stuff, but anyway…Yes, I’m crazy, someone said they would text it in (cant do it myself, no mobile phone), if I wanted them to, and I said yes. Fine, it helps that I know she never reads anything but her kindle on the bus, so I think I’m safe from her reading it. I suppose someone at her work place might, and work out who its aimed at, but I’m sure the chances of that are equally slim.
On top of all that, I know she has a ring, but I have no idea if its a wedding ring. Probably is, but…? Oh, and secondly, I’m sure the only way someone like her would consider a sapphic relationship would be by influencing her mind, something like this!
But yes, fine, if it appears in the Metro (tomorrow would be the earliest possibility for that), and she looks at me, in a certain way, the next time I see her, well…I’ll probably still have to do without even a friend for coffee! But, just maybe…?
The video, some old Doris Day, from Calamity Jane, what I will probably have to do, concerning my certain cute lady…
Yes, I know a few people who were hit by the snow storm over the weekend, on the East Coast of the US. Thankfully, as far as I know at least, all are fine. As an added treat, Storm Jonas is now heading for the UK, but thankfully (I think?) by the time it gets here, having crossed the Atlantic and all, it wont be snow that hits us, it will be rain. Mind, given how flooded some areas have been in Yorkshire, I’m not sure that a possible 4 inch dump of rain is necessarily a good thing?
I have seen several feet of snow on the ground before. Thankfully, I was on a nice warm train, crossing the Rockies in the winter of 2003. And by the time I got off the train briefly, in North Dakota, it wasnt snowing, but was exceedingly cold! Minus 25F, dont ask me what that is in centigrade, but its cold. But of course, much of the snow had been swept off the platform, so all was fine.
Thats not to say I havent been out in a snow storm, because I have. November 2014, in Albany, I experienced a snow storm where 11 inches of the stuff was dumped on the city. Do you know what, the buses kept running, though admittedly, that was down a main road, I’m not sure if it was the same on lesser routes, but…they were used to it, nothing ground to a halt, unlike when we have more than an inch over here, probably less!
I’ve seen pictures of New York, I’ve also seen pictures of more rural areas, and the way the snow built up, is quite amazing. Yes, I know, public transit was stopped in places, roads were closed in a few too, but I do think that was wise on the whole.
Who, me, I prefer California weather, I think. Last night I was watching the golf, from Palm Springs, much more my kind of weather lol!
Given that one dear friend on Long Island, said he would do nasty things to anyone singing ‘Let It Snow’, I thought I’d better choose something else for the video tonight, so you can have this Doris Day track instead.
I suppose I’d better thank Andy Murray for giving me some blog material today, because I was trying to think of a subject to write about, then he did me a big favour, so…
The last time that Great Britain won the Davis Cup, the World Cup of Tennis for want of a better term, Jean Harlow was still alive! Yes, it really was that long ago, 1936 in fact. They reached the final again the following year, but that was it, until 1978, when somehow or other, they again reached the final, to be defeated. And lets be honest, apart from a few years when Henman, and Rusedski represented GB, we havent really had the players to get that far, on the whole, as a team at least. Indeed, just 5 years ago, they were one step away from dropping into the bottom rung of tennis, but this weekend…
Its hard to consider the difference in how things were arranged back then. Instead of having to battle through a number of rounds, as now, the reigning champions simply sat back, let everyone else battle it out, and then only play a challenge final. So in fact, the last time prior to 1978 that GB actually qualified for a final was 1933! To say getting to competitions back then was different too. None of this jetting around the world to play, as per now, of course, they didnt exist!
The other obvious difference back then too, all players were amateur! It was only in the late ’60s that professional tennis even became recognised as official! But this weekend, in Belgium, after 79 years, Great Britain again became the champions of the world. Fine, mainly because of one man, Andy Murray. We have a few other decent players now, but none in the top echelons of the sport. Ironically, Belgium were in the same position, with David Goffin.
But yes, its nice to know that after all this time, Britain is on top of the tennis world, yet again. Hey, I’m not a big fan of the sport, but lets face it, in terms of sports played by much of the world, we arent at the top of many! Great news!
Fine, the video. Bit like GB last winning the Davis Cup, its an oldie. Not quite that old, but it does mean I couldnt find a live performance, but besides all that…
I suspect its just one of these things that happens from time to time, or maybe I have truly connected to a Harlow aura, and lots of men are chasing after me? More likely, given they are people I havent got a clue who they are, and they are attaching themselves as friends on Facebook, they might just think I’m a wealthy (ha ha), single lady that they can fleece!
Put it this way, this isnt the first time its happened, but both times previously when it has happened, its been principally guys from the sub continent, who are presumably seeking an easy passage into the UK, or an East European, presumably more after the better life, (and my money?) than having fallen in love with my picture!
Could just be me, and I’m wrong, but…So fine, they’ve all fallen wildly in love, with this mid fifties transgender woman, and want to marry me, and take me to paradise? No, I dont believe the last one, but wouldnt it be wonderful if it was true? But anyway…
The thing that gets me, is that they are like buses, you wait months for one to come along, then all of a sudden, 3 come along, pretty much at once! But this time, they arent from impoverished countries, my latest 3 beaus seem to live either in the US, or the UK. Of course, online ‘dating’, they could really be anywhere, so…
Sadly, I’ve yet to discover much about my mystery men, as all have only caught me on Facebook message, late at night, when I’m trying to just get done, and get to bed. None of them seem to have mutual friends, no obvious group connection, so how they’ve found me? And its not like the 2 from the US are local to me, either! But there must be something about me, I guess? Maybe they’re Jean Harlow fans, and want their own modern version of her lol! If I ever find out, I’ll let you know.
Who knows, might get to wear a wedding dress yet!
Talking of dressing up stylishly, tomorrow is the photo shoot, and unlike last time, this time the advance plan is pure Harlow. Hey, I look like her (even I admit that by now), so we might as well play it up accordingly. So lets just say the outfits might be a bit more glamorous than some in the last shoot. Just to remind you, and for those who havent seen any, to see the resemblance
So guys, if you want to tell me I am actually a glamour kitten, and men really are falling for my looks, let me know! I’ve actually got a selection of dress lengths, so if you’re lucky (or unlucky, depending on your view of them), you might get to see my legs! Will be a while though, I suspect, but once I get them…I’ll let you know tomorrow how it went, and whether some strange machine was used on me, to make me think I actually was (or still am at that time) Jean Harlow.
The video, another blonde, from a couple of decades later, in tribute to all these men who seem to want to be my ‘friend’!
Yes, fine, by the glorious age of 56, I’ve done more than a few job interviews in my life, been doing them for about 40 years in fact. More or less to the day in fact, as I started my first job in October 74, so it must almost literally be the anniversary of that.
But, the one next week will be the first as a woman! Not that its as critical as some, its for a different internal role at work, not one at a firm that dont know me, but anyway…still a change in look for me, thats for sure. In the past, the style of dress was simple, suit, shirt and tie. But this time around…something new!
I assume that if that 16 year old lady had been going for her first interview in 1974, it would have been a smart dress, heeled shoes, the works! And very smart I’m sure I would have looked too, my mother wouldnt have allowed anything else. But of course, I wasnt a 16 year old girl back then!
But finally, I get to go for an interview as a woman. Thing is, I had no idea if a woman is still ‘expected’ to wear a dress to an interview, or not? Seemingly, you can, but equally a smart blouse, and business trousers, or skirt are fine too. Nothing to stop me wearing a dress, of course, but no longer a must. As for the high heels, fine, though I suspect they may travel to and from work in a bag, not on my feet! Even more so, given I’ll be commuting in the rush hour going in, and they ‘might’ slow me down in the commuter scrum lol.
To be honest, if it was practical, I’d probably love to wear a dress to my interview, just because I could. But given if it would have to be a change at work (realistically), I almost certainly wont. I’m pretty sure it will be a blouse, and skirt/trousers, just because its easier that way. Though I know that teenage girl in me wants to put on her best dress, and go for it, for that first interview.
So maybe, just maybe, I should take a bag with me, and go for it? Hmm? Thing is, I’m not sure if that will impress, or otherwise, the people interviewing me. I know, I know, I want the job, dont be a rebel, but…is a woman wearing a dress that much of a rebel?
Video choice works for my outfit choice, and my interview chances, I guess?
Well, this is one of those occasions where the initial premise for the blog today isn’t going to happen! No prizes for what it was going to be, given its the 14th November, in other words, Louise Brooks’s birthday, of sorts. She would have been 107 today, but was never going to last that long given her lifestyle!
Anyway, enough of that, its not what you’re getting now, because I found this video! Its rare, to say the least, I’d certainly never discovered it before, and with Doris Day, thats saying something! Everyone remembers her as a film star, who could sing, but in fact, she started out as a dancer, who only turned to singing after a car crash. Then she became a film star, and so…who at 89 (officially), or at 91 (as some records suggest), she’s still going strong!
And yes, its fair to say that if I’d been a young girl, I would have wanted to be Doris Day. I think I did anyway, as a teen, so I should have taken the dysphoria hint back them, but never mind…
Next week, I will be taking a ‘Sentimental Journey’ again, one I’ve been taking from my youth, on the Settle & Carlisle railway. I’ve known it through good days (as it is now), bad days (2 trains a day, and only stations at Settle, Appleby and Carlisle open), and probably inbetween too. Though there are steam specials on the line a-plenty, I’ve never been on one…yet. No, next week, the journey will be by humble diesel train, yet again.
It is a spectacular journey, but then again, so are some of the Scottish ones. And I can bear witness that travelling by train, through the Rockies in winter, is quite something too, and I really must do it again sometime, though I have no idea when.
But thats for next week. Prior to then, I have the delights of battling Trans Pennine Express for the next 3 days, to and from work. Not terribly scenic, definitely nothing I could ever feel sentimental about, but it helps pay the wages! It would be wonderful to write as an occupation, but dont think thats ever going to happen.
And if you havent worked out the music video already, well, frankly I’m disappointed in you lol! Yes, it should be that obvious I feel.
No, it didnt snow overnight, or not as I could see, anyway. What it did do, is snow this morning. No, we dont look like Vermont, or the Rockies, but for a while there, it was white. And given it snowed most of the morning, I gave up on going to Manchester at an early point, expecting the total breakdown of public transport to follow soon after, even if I had fancied wandering around Manchester in the snow, and hmm, maybe not? 😉 Funny thing is, it never really got nasty, the buses and trains kept running, and eventually, it even stopped snowing!
So, determined to at least get out, and get some fresh air, I ventured out into Huddersfield, if only to see if there were any interesting snippets left from the sales, as an aside to getting said fresh air. My main plan had been to have a look around Manchester first, and if nothing took my eye there, but, anyway, best laid plans and all that… Clearly all the best stuff was gone, apart from one top that I considered in BHS, I didnt see a thing that really grabbed me at all. Mind, I do need inspiring when I dont really have a major need, and it wasnt working. Then, last stop before home, Bon Marche. For me, they’re a bit like Peacocks and Dorothy Perkins, nicer than Primark, but that little bit more pricy too. Yes, I know, better quality, but I’m a Yorkshire girl, with small pockets lol! But they had a sale on too, and alright, I boosted their economy lol! 3 Nice tops, 1 pair of trousers, and a nightdress later, I was helping the local economy! Then, finally heading back for the bus, I spotted a new (to me at least) charity shop in a little precinct, and I found a long leather(ish?) skirt to my liking, at a silly price, as charity shops do. Oh, and I found the shoes to match the gold dress, long after the event. Proper heels too, but definitely not high ones. They fitted, so…No, I dont know why either, given I have no idea when I will be wearing a dress again, but I couldnt resist.
So now, before I even get to Manchester (tomorrow, if its not dangerously icy by then), I have even less needs lol! But yes, still going, I might find more in the larger size stores over there, plus my knees need that Aqua Massager even more after today! As the song says, Que sera, sera…lol!
Yes, I know what video you’re thinking is coming, and you’re wrong lol! 😛 No, the title is purely because I’m officially on holiday for a week from now. Well, strictly I was off today too, but according to the records, that was just a day off for the week. But now… 🙂
No, I’m not doing anything special, well not unless you count Christmas shopping as something special? Is it really that time of year again already? Yes, I know it is, works dinner has already been mentioned, but where has the year gone? Some might think that when you havent got many presents to buy, that Christmas shopping would be easy? Wrong, it might be if people knew what they wanted, or were easy to buy for, but…you get my drift lol!
As usual, Manchester is my choice of destination for doing my shopping, principally because one target is a shop selling railway videos, and there is an excellent one there, near to Piccadilly station. Should be more fun tomorrow, I can see if all the fuss about Stalybridge station lives up to hype. Sadly I dont know of a bargain ‘posh frocks’ shop there, but I might look for one, just in case. Have actually found some potential dresses in my wardrobe (one I didnt even know I had, pink!), so its at least partly solved, though certainly none are those with the big flowing skirt types, that some seem to want me to wear, the sort of Cinderella look, I guess? There are some nice ones on Ebay, but delivery from China, and delivery dates are either close to, or after the dinner date, so cant go down that road.
Yes, I will do some window shopping for myself too, though beyond said dress (and thats not a serious hunt now), I dont have any major needs in clothing at present. The only other way I will get something is if I see the perfect 20’s style dress, at a sensible price. If that Aqua Massager thing is working, I will probably give it a try, even if I am booked in for a standard massage on Tuesday, I’m just a sucker for new ideas.
I will do other trips out during the week, just not sure what at present. Well, I know one on Friday, got a briefing at work, even if on holiday. Hey, I’m getting paid for it (and travel time), so I’ll survive lol! I’d hoped that Northern Rail might have started their special offer price for journeys on the scenic Settle & Carlisle line, but…they are, the week after my holiday lol! So yes, if anyone has some good ideas, or wants to treat me to a coffee, or more… No, not expecting lol!
Ah, the video. An oldie, and you could say, something I’ll be doing tomorrow, though travelling with Trans Pennine is rarely a sentimental experience. And yes, that is a clue!
