Fine, I havent done any sport in a while, so lets do some tonight, of sorts at least.
For those who care about football/soccer (depending which side of the Atlantic you are), the World Cup is on, in Russia. Irony, given its in the country of Trump’s best buddy, the US arent there, so probably a lack of interest over there, maybe? Or maybe all those ‘immigrants’ he so hates, and I dont, are celebrating Mexico’s victory over Germany earlier today?
But yes, tomorrow, at 7 pm my time, just as I come out of work, England start their campaign, against Tunisia. Yes, I know, I’ll miss it, what a shame, she facetiously says. No, I havent watched a minute of it yet, nor do I plan to. But what this does mean, with luck, is that most of the English male population will ensure they’re home, watching the game! Which hopefully means a few less people on the streets to the bus station, and on the buses tomorrow night. Of course, knowing the awful service provided by First Buses, I am assuming that their bus drivers will still be working, and not watching the games themselves, and therefore the bus doesnt turn up! Thankfully Northern Rail arent on strike again until Tuesday, so I have a back up at least!
But yes, with luck, a quieter journey home than normal, unless I pass a bar showing the game, I guess, then all bets are off!
The video, a Police oldie, one of their lesser hits, but a hopefully apt one.
And before anyone asks, thats 1 good farce, and 1 typical farce, which I will come to shortly.
The classic farce, technically twice over, was unsurprisingly First Buses in Huddersfield. The first was Wednesday, when I just missed the bus I was hoping to get, by about 20 yards, because the bus driver chose to ignore me racing for the bus. Or fine, racing as much as I can nowadays, with my ailments. No great issue, they’ll be another in 10 minutes, which would still be fine. 28 minutes later, 2 buses turned up at once! Mind, by that time, a third should nearly have been due, and indeed passed us on the way into town! Not a shock, as everyone got on the first 2 (different directions up my road, but both going into Huddersfield), but anyway…
Mind, the First farce (beneficially) continued, as the 9.27 Trans Pennine Express train was running 7 minutes late (the last of the 3 I was hoping to catch), so got it by the skin of my teeth. Just as well, because the 9.46 was late as well, and I would have been late on its normal time, so by then…rolls eyes…
The presentation went fine, as much as I can tell, I tried to entertain, as well as inform, and hopefully that worked for 10-15 minutes. Got a round of applause, which I hope wasnt just polite, anyway… No, sorry readers, no film of that presentation exists, so you’ll just have to believe me lol! But yes, praise for where I work, and attitude to transgender workers, and all that, played up just how lovely our office was!
I’m glad I stayed the rest of the day, some other very interesting talkers as well, I must say.
And then yesterday, in the end, I ended up in Leeds again. I know, dont go there for 15 months, then twice in 2 days! First ‘excelled’ themselves again on that journey too, the bus from here was a few minutes late, but nothing dramatic. Snag was, I needed to then get a bus to Bradford, to meet up with someone to get to a meal, and a play last night, and that was pretty much due. 8 minutes later, it finally turned up! So much for going a bus early, so I could draw some money for the evening. In fact, due to her inability to drive at a reasonable speed, and her desire to argue with customers, we rolled (finally) into Bradford 16 minutes late! I got some money out of a machine, and moved as quick as my body would take me to the office, and was only just late!
The meal was nice, the amusing moment being my first UK meal as a ‘senior citizen’. Yes, its 4 months away, but i’m sorry, a bargain is a bargain, and I’m close enough! :p Yes, not my first, because in the US, at Denny’s, if you have a British appetite, and a friendly server, you can get senior meals before you’re 50 lol! Been there, done that!
Ah, now to the play, which was a good type of farce, and very entertaining too, thanks to Cookridge Amateur Dramatics Society. Very funny, well acted, and set in the West Country, which explains the video shortly. Traditional stuff, lots of confusion over identities and the like, lots of other mayhem, and a delightful ending. Been there, done that probably, but about 20 years ago (or so), so it was fun to see one done from an audience perspective. For readers in the Leeds area, I gather there will be a Panto, sometime around February, so keep your eyes peeled.
Tomorrow, for the first time in 5 days, I need to find my way to the office again. Wednesday was the presentation, and I took today off, because I knew I’d be late home last night, and wouldnt want to get up early. Unfortunately, someone forgot I was off today, and woke me at 6.30 when I hadnt showed signs of life! Still, went back to sleep, all fine…
Oh, and one more thing for tomorrow, my new ‘old crock’ chair has seemingly arrived in my absence. I assume it wont look like a brainwashing, or electric chair, but a woman can hope! 😛
Right, the video. I was thinking of ‘Let Me Entertain You’, but then I found this. West Country, pertinent title for a farce, and…those of a sensitive nature probably shouldnt play it!
For those of you fortunate enough not to live in West Yorkshire, or who do, but are not dependent on this awful bus company, it may mean less to you than some. But fine, because I’m lacking for blog material (feel free to suggest ideas, ideally non political), its the best I can do tonight.
Today, First Buses increased all their bus fares around here. Fair enough, its only once a year, and if they provided a decent service, I wouldnt object. But thats the critical term, provided a decent service, because they dont! Thankfully my experience of their evening bus service is now restricted to 3 nights a week, instead of 4. However last week, twice, the bus turned up more than 10 minutes later than scheduled (and after 8pm, that can hardly be down to traffic), and the other night, I have no idea, after more than 20 minutes, there was no sign of any bus, so I gave up, and paid out for a taxi home!
I’d love to say this was the exception to the rule, and in a sense, it is, this is worse than normal, but that doesnt mean normal is a good service, because it isnt! In truth at 9.15 in the morning, when we are meant to have a reliable service, we went for about 2-3 weeks where if a bus turned up less than 5 minutes late, I never spotted it, and I’m near the start of the route, so…
Yes, sadly, like so many things in life now, the reliability of their service is awful, but they still feel free to raise fares by far more than inflation! 5-10%, if you really wanted to know!
So yes, First Buses, feel free to raise your fares, but you need to raise the quality of the service you provide too! I know, wild dreams, but…
Fine, grumpy old lady rant over! 😛
Video time. Well, in a sense, its the same group as the last video, but it isnt. Thats because this is the 70’s version of the Temperance 7, complex stuff! And yes, it sums up how I feel about First Buses, and all they dont do!
So fine, the last couple of blogs have had meaningful thoughts, and details, mixed in with some light hearted stuff, so lets continue in that vein (pardon the pun) for tonight as well. And yes, I’m told my teeth will look normal in the morning lol! 😛
Yes, today was the day when a woman broke my skin, and took blood from my body. Oh fine, honestly, it wasnt a vampire with her teeth, but…that might have made for a more fun day if it had been, and I could have flown home afterwards lol! That would have been a lot quicker than relying on the truly awful First Bus service, for sure!
To be honest, I remembered the last time that someone tried to take some blood from me for a test, and they had a hard time trying to find a viable vein to take some from. So I wondered if today might be the same, but no, she found one easily, sharpened her teeth, and bit…mmm!
No, honest, she didnt. She pricked me with a needle, withdrew a reasonable amount of blood (or it seemed so to me at least), and then simply gave me a small pad to hold over the spot, and that was it! Well, stuck it to my arm, like a plaster, which is how I have it now, but besides all that…
I know, no secret serum injected into my veins, turning me into who knows what (robot would have been nice, obviously), no nibbling with teeth to turn me into an innocent victim of a vampire, or anything like that, shame!
Ah, the buses. There are 2 routes that head in my direction from the Hospital. One should run every 10 minutes, one should run every 20. Both had a bus due soon after I arrived at the bus stop, so…Yes, eventually, 25 minutes or more later, 2 buses turned up, pretty much at the same time. Before that, who knows, invisible buses? Or maybe I had been turned into a vampire, and just couldnt see them? No, nobody else saw them either, lol! I honestly think the only things that bus company are First for, are unreliabilty, and poor service!
So yes, again, I have to wait on results, which should be about a week or two. No, I dont think they’ll be telling me I’ve been turned into a vampire, somehow! 😛 Hopefully they’ll offer me a whole new body, but thats very unlikely too!
Right, video time. There is, as often, a clue to the song in the blog title. The singer, one of the true greats of all time!
Well, this is it, last UK blog for a little while, though I’m sure that if you’re good, you’ll get a few from the US, assuming Hurricane Irma doesnt decide to come and visit Cape Cod at least. If it does, all bets are off lol!
If you’re wondering about the blog title, its a ‘witty’ comment on my week. Tuesday, I became an, err, natural blonde again, when I went and had my hair colored around the corner, in preparation for the holiday. Yes, I am joking about the natural bit, if anyone was stupid enough to think otherwise! I will be back there shortly after the holiday is over, for another reason. Due to the wedding, I’ve been trying (mostly in vain) to grow my hair out, in case I need to put it up for the wedding. Well, I still wouldnt call it bounteous, but its more than I normally have. And yes, its beginning to annoy lol. So it will be getting clipped back to a more 30’s length very soon after I get back!
Secondly, yesterday, a lovely lady named Linda did her best (my body is the spoiler, not her skills) to get me in reasonable shape for the trip, and to get my nails looking all pretty as well. In truth, beyond my back, my body actually isnt in bad condition (relatively) at present, due to some suggested knee exercises given to me by the Occupational Health Dept at work. I must admit, I was cynical as to how well they would work, but fine, I’ve been amazed how much better they are, so…
Lastly, and with no thanks to First Buses on this (invisible bus syndrome this morning), I went over to Bradford today, for the bone density scan tests. Yes, I know, dont have to go to Bradford today for work, and still end up going there! I must say the staff at St Lukes were nice, and very efficient, so swiftly dealt with, and on my way again.
Oh, the two out of three bit? Well, it was a radio-logical x-ray, and I was sort of hoping that those beams would do something amazing to my body, and I’d come out looking like a 30 year old version of my past life dancer self, but it never happened. No, I didnt really think it would, but no harm in hoping lol!
Beyond that, most of the stuff I’m taking with me is packed in the case, pretty much anything left out is the stuff I need tonight and/or in the morning. I plan to wear the corset brace in the morning, because I will have to wait at check in, before being put into a wheelchair, and also to offer some support for moving the case along. I plan to get it off before the flight though, its just too warm wearing something made of neoprene for about 12 hours. Maybe I need to lose a few pounds in weight, but thats not a favored way of doing it!
Ah, the wheelchair. Yes, I’m still trying to get my head around the idea that it is wise, fine, and fully permitted for me to have one, but I still feel slightly guilty, all the same. If anyone wants to mentally solve that issue for me, feel free to do so! Yes, I’d enjoy that! 😉
At least there was one other piece of good news today, the swimsuit finally arrived, with the emphasis on finally. I’ll be honest, after 2 false starts, I didnt believe it was coming, even when I had an email telling me it was, until they delivered it at the door. Studio.co.uk are the shambles of a company that I would advise anyone not to ever purchase from!
Right, video time. Going back to the blog title, for one of the lesser known Meatloaf/Steinman songs, that is very apt here.
PS, If anyone does want to put me in a transformation chamber, and make me look like a young Clara Elaine Johnson, or Jean Harlow, feel free to contact me lol!
OK, some sports fanatics might like to look away at this point, just saying…right, have those crazy folk gone? 😉 Dont get me wrong, there are some sports I enjoy, baseball, and cricket being 2 of the obvious ones, but equally there are a few I cant stand, which include the soccer version of football (for US reader purposes) and boxing. So if you love those last 2 sports, and are still reading, get ready for ‘grumpy old woman’ moment lol!
I see myself as a sports follower, rather than a fan, in that yes, I have a few teams I follow, but none of whom do I get overly passionate about. No, not even the Dodgers lol!
Its fair to say I’ve been bored senseless by all the hype, and drivel that has been about over the Mayweather, and McGregor fight last night. Thank goodness its finally over, though I’ve no doubt its still going to get mentioned way too much over the next few days. Hopefully now, mighty mouth, aka McGregor will now keep quiet about it all, but I suspect that might be wishful thinking.
I’m sure most of the US sports actually have the infantile behaviour, relating to rookies joining the team, but I have to say that the NFL seems to take the biscuit. Fine, I know that by my standards, even the rookies in the NFL are on salaries beyond my wildest dreams, but why the senior players seem to find it amusing to get the rookies to pay absolutely preposterous amounts for a dinner, I have absolutely no idea? Seriously, does anyone with an IQ over 50 find this sort of behaviour amusing, because I dont! The latest team to involve themselves in this stupidity are the Green Bay Packers, where 12 players ‘took out’ some rookies to dinner, ordered the most ridiculous items, and presented them with a bill for over $34,000! Some of them will probably be cut before the season even starts, so how they are meant to afford this? Sadly, this isnt the first time, or even the second time I’ve read of this immature stuff this summer from NFL teams, so I really despair. Along with the whole Kaepernick based anthem stuff, I’m wondering if I really want to bother with the sport any more. Yes, CFL seems a lot more fun!
Ah, and finally the sport that inspired this rant, football. Though to be fair to the animals that support this sport, they were unlucky I saw this last night, because if First Buses ran a half decent service, I would have been out of Huddersfield before this happened. I got back into town last night, just before 5.00, and if the bus home had turned up, I would have missed the arrival back in town of the so called fans. Unfortunately it didnt, the next bus 10 minutes later (supposedly) actually left nearly 10 minutes late, so I saw the whole affair.
Not that I would have missed everything, because even as I was walking to the bus stop, I saw 2 fans having a punch up. Ironically, both were Huddersfield fans! Soon after I managed to see 4 people go by the bus stop, knocking 6 bells out of each other, but that was the more traditional 2 from each team stuff! Lastly I saw a group of about 20 men run by, shouting “Lets get the Bas****s” towards a group of visiting fans, but unluckily for them, a group of police were with said fans, so they were quickly cordoned off, and hopefully arrested!
Baseball at least seems to save all its punch ups to on the pitch, between players, most of which I see as pretty childish. Yes, I’m sure the Dodgers get involved in those, but never seen one yet!
But yes, all this only makes me grateful I dont get fanatical about sport, if thats what it does to you.
Fine, rant over!
Video time. A song from the 70’s, which I’m sure most will never have heard. But yes, I’m old, remember it, and it seems rather apt, given what I was trying to do last night
No, please dont get all concerned, I’m not losing my job, or even changing my job at present (would need a good acting/modelling offer to do that), just a few things changing with my working life.
The first of those actually happened yesterday, the system we use at work got changed, hopefully for the better, but I think its fair to say its hard to say on the basis of just one day, but seemingly everything worked, so fingers crossed…?
However, the one I’m really going to notice starts next week, when the working hours I’ve just got used to, after 3 months (first 3 months were on different training hours) of working from 12 till 8 during the week, all get changed. Fine, not massively for me, I’m going to be working 11 till 7 instead, but fine, I’m going to miss that hour in bed of a morning, all the same. I know, I get it back at the other end of the day, so I doubt I will lose much sleep overall, but fine, getting up at 6.20, instead of 7.20 is still going to hurt a bit! No, Saturday doesnt change at all for me.
There is a ‘swings and roundabouts’ thing that will happen that will help though. Finishing an hour earlier will mean the bus service home wont be as spaced out as it is now, in fact it will still be 1 every 20 minutes at that point, instead of trying to catch the first one for 30 minutes, and the last one for an hour. Given my experience of the 7.42 on a Friday, that is going to be a good thing. The bad thing, being seriously blonde, I changed my starting time by an hour, but left my 30 minute break at the same time, so now the first half of the day is going to be very long, the second part pretty short, but I’m sure I will live! That might be changing fairly soon, with luck, anyway.
Oh fine, the bus situation. No, I’m not going to miss getting the 8.12 bus from Bradford to Huddersfield 3 times a week, formerly 4, as the punctuality record of that bus is awful. In truth, I think its arrived in Huddersfield, on time, about 4 or 5 times in 3 months! I think I’ve missed a bus that runs 12 minutes after that bus is due in town more times than that in the same period! Yes, some of it is First Buses fault, the poor driver has a 4 minute allowance between scheduled arrival time in Bradford, and leaving time to come back again, so even if he’s a couple of minutes late, never going to happen. Thankfully the ones I will be getting have a better turnaround time, so all should, should be fine! Famous last words, I know, but…
Alright, the video. What I could say is that I never want to appear in the ‘diary’ at work (no, its not a diary, but it works for the song), but inevitably, I almost certainly will. Well, unless I get turned into a robot, or something, then maybe not lol? 😉
For those who remember Alison Moyet in Yazoo, in the 80’s, this might come as a shock, but yes, its her. Yes, she’s lost a lot of weight, for sure, congrats to her for doing so.
So fine, let me just say before I get started, that in an ideal world, I’d be covering the women’s protests today, but after 3 political postings, that might be pushing my luck too far, especially if I do happen to have any right wing readers here, so lets give it a miss, and settle for a short piece about why you’re getting a blog on a Saturday, when you wouldnt normally!
Thursday evening, as seems far too often the case with First buses of late, the 8.12 from Bradford was running late. Badly enough that I thought I would have missed my normal bus home, but thankfully not late enough (unlike twice in the last couple of weeks), that I would at least get a bus that runs 12 minutes after that is due into Huddersfield, if I ran. So I did!
In fact (unfortunately as it happens), my normal bus hadnt gone, despite being nearly 5 minutes late, though ironically the one after it (there are three buses in about 6 minutes, then nothing for 30. Yes, you tell me, though they go in different directions after getting out of town) had already gone. So I increased my speed, as much as a woman of my age can do (which isnt much!) to try and get it.
What I didnt notice until I was pretty much on top of them, was a group of roughly dressed, very drunk men stood at one of the interim bus shelters. So fine, I moved out slightly to avoid them. Snag was, as I was going past, one moved across towards me, and the next thing I knew, I felt my ankle tapped, and the inevitable happened, I went forward, less than gracefully, landing on the pavement with a thump. One of the others, to be fair, did ask if I was OK, but given it was his friends that had done it, I gave him nothing more than a glare.
I tried to get up, and to my delight, I could. My left knee was tender, my right knee hurt like hell, but I could walk. Thankfully, the bus driver had waited for me, so I got to the bus, got on board, and got home. In truth, the right knee didnt look as bad as I thought it might, but it wasnt a pretty sight, all the same. Dave helped to patch me up, took one of the painkillers I had in my bag, and survived.
Yesterday, given the fact I could walk of sorts, and I could flex my knee of sorts, I did what I typically do under those circumstances, I went to work. Yes, it still hurt a lot, but I had some mobility, so…in truth, I’d decided I’d get the bus into town, see how that went, and then take the next step from there. Seeing I hadnt ‘broken down’ completely, I carried on.
Fine, in these days of social media, a few people already knew by the time I got to work. I reported that in the 0.001% chance of a fire alarm going off, I wasnt going to be able to do the stairs on my own, fine! In truth, when I didnt have to move, it wasnt too bad, but everytime I had to stand up, sit down, and the like, yes, it hurt, a lot! So, after much discussion about work today, mainly involving whether it was the best thing to do, I agreed on a compromise. I didnt want to take it off as sick leave, because as things were at the time, I could get to work, I could do my work, but it wasnt easy! Equally, I didnt want to wake myself up at 6.00 this morning, find out the knee was in no fit state to go to work, and not be able to get back to sleep.
So fine, compromise. I had built up a little bit of flexi time at work, so I took today off against that. Fine, I am now behind slightly, but I will catch up in time, might just take a few weeks. In truth, by now, tonight, it might be starting to improve. And yes, it probably wasnt bad enough that I couldnt have gone to work today, if I had to. But sense prevailed, and I never had to ask myself that question!
Let me lastly add, for those thinking otherwise, this was not a Trans related incident. I heard one of them (probably my assailant) say something about a lady running as I started to pass them, and it just developed from there. No, they just thought it was smart to trip up a running lady, for the fun of it! And people wonder why I dont fancy men lol! No, I know, most men wouldnt do that, but…
Right, as songs, and videos by Abba go, this is one of the lesser known, later songs. Doesnt make it a bad song, just saying…?
One of the hazards of being a non driver, is that you’re vulnerable to the whims of public transport, and the awful service they provide far too often. I’ll stand up and say that this rant isnt helped by the fact that First buses are putting up their fares around here on Sunday, despite the fact that the service they provide has deteriorated badly over the last few weeks. The number of cancelled buses on the routes up towards here, and Almondbury of late, just disgraceful. And then to rub it in by putting up their prices too…
Yesterday afternoon was a fine example of just how awful their service is. Having got out of work 30 minutes earlier than normal, it would be fair to assume that I would get home 30 minutes earlier than normal too, right? Wrong, I actually got in 10 minutes later than normal, despite the earlier start!
It started badly when I arrived at the Bradford bus station at 4.15, to find the 4.15 bus was already gone. Fine, if I’d seen it pulling out or something, then OK, but no, this was ‘gone’! No problem, another bus due in 10 minutes, so I’ll get that. Well, I might have done, but basically the screen counted down the minutes from 10, to showing as due, but the bus never showed. Finally about 4.30, after 5 minutes of showing as due, it disappeared off the screen, like the bus, never to be seen again!
The 4.35 eventually turned up about 4.33, but given there was 2 sets of customers waiting to get on the bus, we finally pulled out at 4.40, pretty full. So therefore we crawled all the way to Huddersfield, picking up, and dropping off passengers until we got to Huddersfield about 9 minutes late. I know, you’re thinking thats not too bad, but its meant to have a lay over of a few minutes in Brighouse, which never happened, which counteracted the delay somewhat.
But anyway, it gets better! I walked around the corner to get a bus up to where I live, to find the 5.24 was due anytime (only about 10 minutes late), and that the 5.34, 5.44 and 6.04 were all cancelled. The 5.54 was running, but at that point was running a mere 18 minutes late! Oh, the 5.24 never appeared either! On top of that, the 5.39, and 5.49 to Almondbury were also cancelled!
In the end, I walked part of the way home, using a bus (that I had to pay a fare for, as its a different company) to get me up the hill, but that was full, and I needed to stand, because First are so useless!
Seriously, I couldnt recommend First buses to anyone, especially the Huddersfield service, though I gather the service in Leeds is equally bad. And they want to increase the fares, but I doubt it will improve the service.
OK, in their defence, today, everything worked perfectly coming home, and because the 4.24 was running about 8 minutes late, I actually got home early! The bus I should have caught, running 7 minutes late!
I know, I know, but I’m 58, have tried driving lessons 3 times when I was much younger, failed miserably, so its never going to work now!
Fine, rant over!
The video, sums up the difference between yesterday, and today, I guess?
