I’m sure most people have noticed that Hurricane Matthew has been blowing its destructive way across the Caribbean islands, and up the East Coast of the US by now. If not, why not, as its been on the news everywhere. My sympathies go out to all affected by it, I might add.
Firstly, last night, I briefly tuned into the college game going on in North Carolina, and to say it was wet there, would be putting it mildly. They battled through the game, though I gather, hardly surprisingly that the weather had an effect on the quality of play.
So fine, at 9.00 in my time zone, I wasnt surprised to find out that the baseball game in Washington had been wiped out by the weather, even if it wasnt as bad there as further down the coast, it was bad enough! Ironically, thats an advantage for me, because its now being played (as I type) in Washington, and I can watch it all, as opposed to last night, when I would have missed the end of it. I also got to see Game 1 (middle of the night job) on a recording, as the TV channel had to fill the space where it should have been, so… Yes, this Dodgers fan is hoping they can win again tonight!
I’ve also just heard that due to weather (remnants of hurricane, I suspect), the game in Boston tonight will now be happening tomorrow! What I get in coverage tomorrow night, depends on a result I will only discover in the morning, might only be part of the Dodgers game, in LA, before bed, or I might have a game in Toronto too, pretty much in full.
I’ve never been in a hurricane, tornado, or anything like that, and I’m happy for it to stay that way. Seemingly I’ve experienced a couple of (very minor) earthquakes in LA, but nothing that anyone would even comment on, in that area at least. Yes, I just hope they’re not saving the big one for next May lol!
OK, video time. Maybe completely asexual, and lesbian preferring bisexual wouldnt be so interested in this sort of event, but hey, its a very apt, classic gay anthem, so…
Yes, in case you were wondering, I am being facetious. I’ll be honest, this morning, I had to wonder if I was in Yorkshire, or Alaska! I must admit, I dont think I’ve ever been caught in a snow storm, at the end of April before! I’ve seen snow in April before, many times, but we’re nearly into May, and seriously…! To be fair, it didnt actually settle on the ground here, though it did in other places around here, a little more rural, or at a higher altitude. But to be fair, that wasnt much consolation this morning.
Thats right, the day I had to go into town, to sign on, it decided to blow up a snow storm. Yes, seriously, I thought I was signing on in Anchorage, or somewhere, judging by the weather conditions in town! Thankfully it wasnt too long a walk from the bus stop, to the job centre, but even so, I was covered in snow on arrival. By the time I came back out, it was easing off, though still snowing, but getting very fine, verging on rain. By the time I got back home, about 15 minutes later, it was just beginning to leave off, even raining. But yes, just for the time I was out, I felt like Elsa the Eskimo!
The rest of the day, not been too bad, though I have no idea how cold it was out there, I havent ventured out since. But fine, on Sunday, we enter May, and yet we are still having snow storms, crazy!
Yes, and to think, this time last year (I had in fact, strictly, been back a couple of days), I was enjoying the heat, and sun, in Hollywood!
Right, the video. Well, this morning, I was walking in the snow, but this is as close as I could get!
OK, fine, I’ve cheated for once. Thats not a major clue to the blog material, nor is it the title song of the video…quite. But for all that, there is a link to the video in tonight’s edition.
OK, going back to Tuesday, and this is where the video connection kicks in, Pasadena. Yes, I went there on my trip out. There was a reason for going there (beyond an interesting place to visit) but that will get mentioned when we get to the tune. Pleasant enough place, had a nice lunch, had a look around a couple of nice (value) clothes shops, before heading to the big mall, which seems a bit of a work in progress at the moment. Oh, the cute moment, I went and had a facial, the first time in the US. There were a couple of differences to norm, the first one being the abundant use of steam in the first part, presumably to moisten the face, which it certainly did. Oh, and a few ‘toys’ used on my face, I have no idea what, but presumably its meant to strengthen the skin, or something? Then the fun started. Well, fine, strictly, I had an ice cream first, but then went to get the bus home.
For some reason best known to myself, I didnt wait for the express bus back, I got the stopping one. Fine, I was in no rush, but…Yes, there were a few, err, interesting passengers on board, shall we say, and leave it at that? Given I was rather warm (putting it very mildly) by the time I got back, I passed on the movie that evening.
Yesterday was a quiet day, and a livelier evening. Yes, off to see some nice vintage clothing, and spend some money! A dress, a pants suit, a couple of skirts, and a couple of pair of slacks (one of which is cream silk, Jean would love) later, then back into town. Fine, not without incident. I got dropped off, And dropped to the ground. Yes, I hadnt notice the concrete block, and tumbled straight over it. Scraped my right knee a bit, and its stiffened up a bit, but nothing serious.
So today, I’ve taken things relatively easy. A short trip up to the shopping centre at Glendale by bus, and back, and that was it. Nice enough place, but nothing exciting, but at least I now know that.
Tomorrow, a lot depends on how my knee is, and the weather. Yes, it might rain, and thunder a lot, but it might just pass us by. There have been rain, and thunderstorm warnings broadcast tonight in fact, for an area just a little way north of here, in Antelope Valley. Flash flooding, so I’m told, oh wow! Nothing here however, yet!
Right, the video. When I was much younger, there was a group called Manhattan Transfer. They worked with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, a lot of the time. So yes, the Pasadena connection, and who is providing the music tonight. A real old song, to put it mildly
In California that is, though ideally I’d hate the drought to break just when I have 10 precious days there, but knowing my luck…
Its not a hidden fact that in Southern California, pretty much everywhere is currently in drought status. I think its now about 4 years, when far too little water has fallen in the area on the whole. So yes, I wish that for the sake of the locals, they could get a decent amount of water, though I’m told they would need an ocean worth to get back to where they should be, but…not going to happen.
But is it wrong to wish, that it doesnt break just as I hit Hollywood? Yes, I have a few places indoors that I want to visit, the Hollywood Museum for example, but lets face it, most things I want to do, you do outdoors! So hopefully I wont be taking the grey Yorkshire weather with me, when I go.
Dont get me wrong, I can live without the temperature hitting 90 too, but at least you can get shelter from that, from time to time, or even quite possibly in the right place while outside. So yes, I’d love the drought to break, but not while I’m on holiday!
Today has been the day when I’ve (finally) got around to sorting things out for the trip. Currency ordered, credit card topped up, and shuttle booked for trips between airport and hotel. Hey, I’ve even been looking for sensibly priced places where I can get my hair, and make up done on the Saturday of the party too! There are a couple of possibles close to the hotel, so hopefully thats sorted at least.
And that it doesnt rain that night!
In other news…
Yes, I’m in the final week at work, so I’m going to hit a few milestones, I guess? Got one last night that I thought had already happened, my last taxi home at 10.00. I have got 1 more late shift on Saturday, but thats a 9.00, so will need to fight my way home on TPE, hopefully they wont cancel my Saturday night train this week!
Beyond that, there is talk of a farewell drink on Sunday, after I finish, which I will probably make a ‘one and done’ thing, as I’m not a great drinker. Then, I need to start job hunting, ah well…
The video, just perfect for Hollywood, in so many ways.
I think its fair to say that if I was 25-30 years younger, or if I had a man who cared for me as much as Nicole does, then maybe I’d be taking the same step as she is doing on Thursday. Yes, thats right, that last element of transition to womanhood, that last big operation.
I wish her well, naturally.
Maybe one day I will feel the need to take that last step, but for now, given my age, given my single status, and everything else, I just cant face the hassle of going through all the necessary hoops now, especially given that I’ve lived as a woman full time for 4 years now anyway, twice the supposed required period for the next step. Irony, I know…
The funny thing is, when I first got to meet Nicole back in 2004, I was the one already living part time at least as a woman. And all I’ve done since then is move to living full time as a woman, changing my name, and gender in the process. Well, fine, the passport office says I’m still a man, but they are the only ones that do. Judging by the confused look I got at Atlanta Immigration in September, I think the guy thought there was a mistake with my passport!
But anyway…that last big step…hmm?
As I say, Nicole is a fair bit younger than me, and has a man that cares for her, so the transition makes a lot of sense. Me, maybe one day…who knows? Though I must admit, the idea of going to meet my maker, with that thing attached, doesnt fill me with joy! Maybe I should put it in my will that it gets cut off, pre cremation lol!
Anyway, just wanted to say, Nicole Woodhouse, my best wishes, admiration, and everything else goes out to you. Maybe one day you’ll be writing the same thing about me!
The video, something that gave me the idea, turning the corner in your life.
The other most exciting element of current news? No, I havent yet decided what dress I’m wearing on Thursday. At this rate, I’ll be taking more than one with me…rolls eyes! Just a shame, that given I’m getting my hair done, my make up done, that the weather forecast is so awful. Ah well…
So fine, picking up from where I left off last time around.
Yesterday morning, at 11.00, I was picked up from my hotel by S, and whisked back to Worcester, to catch the bus back to Albany. Another entertaining chat en route, which led to me discovering that in fact ‘Jean’ was still in my head, and just needed releasing, to make a show. First S did it, just to sort things out between him, her, and me. More correctly, him, my sub concious and me, but that’s just nit picking. Next thing I know, I’m told to do it for myself, and lo and behold, here’s Jeannie!
But before anyone gets any ideas, there are only 2 people that can wake her up, S, and me! Carla is safely tucked away though, before anyone thinks otherwise.
So fine, I’ve quickly discovered that there is a firm that makes Trans Pennine Express look punctual, and that’s Greyhound buses! Anyway, we finally get away from Worcester about 20 minutes late, and head for the Mass Pike, and the journey home. Big snag, accident on the Mass Pike, was a crawl (or slower) for the first 10 miles, and we finally reached Albany 2.5 hours late! Consolation, the most wonderfully sweet taxi driver on the way home, lovely guy, got a better tip than I normally would give, for sure!
Fine, it was well publicised on the news, and on websites that Albany was going to get hit by a big snow storm about the middle of today. So fine, I went out early, and not far, to a nearby Mall. Alright, time for a little fun, I let ‘Jean’ go shopping instead. Now, that was fun! Main moment of amusement, well it seems that Jean possesses quite a Kansas accent. Slightly combined with my own, but predominantly…
Fun moment, when I mentioned about flying back to the UK to one of the cashiers, given my Kansas accent, she asked me when I moved to the UK. I muttered some random year, and just left it at that! Alright, I did think about getting my sub concious to swap me back, change accents totally, (and huskiness of voice) and confuse her, but I’m a good girl, so I didnt.
By the time I got back out of there, the snow was in free fall, with plenty on the ground. Sadly this morning, I’d lived up to my blonde reputation, and only gone out in shoes, and a medium ‘strength’ coat, instead of boots and anorak. I knew it was coming, so why I did that…no idea?
Its different, seeing so much snow, when its only November. The last time I saw this, was about 2000, in Kirkenes, Norway, and thats the other side of the Arctic Circle! Mind, that was the beginning of November, not the end, so…
Right, you’re now up to date, and no, despite the clearness of the roads at least, I’ve decided to forego the Ice Hockey match in town tonight. I’m not the biggest fan of the sport, but if the weather had been good, I might well have gone. But now…
The video, sums up today’s weather really.
Yes, the clue to the video is in the title, but given the song is 43 years old, most wont work it out without looking at the link!
Tonight, for those of us with Irish ancestry in our blood, is best known as Samhain, an ancient Gaelic/Pagan festival, symbolising the changing of the seasons, and the passing of time. Of course, in the US, where it has been huge for years, it has turned into Halloween. Until the last few years, it wasnt such a big event over here, but in the way of things, it seems to be taking off over here now. I think part of the reason it wasnt a major event over here, is because Firework night is only 6 days away, which has been celebrated, well, seemingly forever!
Which is probably why I have no great memories of Halloween to tell you, it just never happened in this country when I was young! It might have been fun as a child, dressing up, and going around houses, trick or treating, though I doubt I would have gone as a witch at that time, but who knows, it might have been my first moment of female realisation, if I had!
Mind, today, I went out, to sort out my currency for the next trip to the US (just over 3 weeks time) in just a top, and trousers! Temperature was hovering somewhere around 70, at the end of October! Still, I’ll enjoy it while it lasts.
So, for me, I will wish all my readers a blessed Samhain, and hope the winter season passes peacefully for you. Mind, if Jean Harlow’s ghost wants to pay me a visit, through that weakened barrier between the 2 worlds, I wont say no. But come early, please, I’m on an 8.00 start at work tomorrow morning lol!
The video, as I say, you need a good memory (or be as ancient as me) to remember this one. Seemingly live, a rare event for the 1970’s, in a studio!
I know, for most people, summer finished a little while ago, though at the moment its so mild here, its hard to believe its the middle of October. But for all that, next Sunday morning (in the UK at least, before my American readers say something) the clocks go back an hour, marking the end of British Summer time for the year. The US, I believe its one week later? At least I get a guaranteed extra hour of sleep lol!
It doesnt seem that long ago, when I got up at 5.45, it was light. Hey, for a while, it was light when I had to get up at 4.45, for an 8.00 start, but anyway, at present, its now dark for both. Whether it will be at 5.45 next week, no idea, but even if it is, it wont last long.
Yes, going to work, and coming home again, both in the dark, on a standard shift, will seem weird for a while!
And yes, on weekends like this one, I suspect the summer of my life may be beginning to drain away too. Maybe not, but unfortunately, when I got up yesterday, my back felt like it had been hit by a slab of concrete, or is that had been turned into a slab of concrete? Anyway, being daft, and all that, I still went to work. Not a good move in all honesty, as every time I bent down, or tried to move, I knew it!
Thankfully, a Tramadol last night, and a decent nights sleep, and it was slightly less painful today. Hopefully tomorrow, it will be even better. But lets face it, I’m in my mid fifties, my body is unlikely to get very much more supple now! Well, not unless rejuvenation booths move on from fiction, to fact!
If the body behaves, and the weather holds, I intend to go out tomorrow, the last trip out of summer, for sure. If nothing else, I’ll probably get the US Dollars for 5 weeks time, the credit card has already been topped up!
Oh, and a friend tells me, they’ve already had snow in Vermont! Winter is on its way, eek!
The video, well its about the end of summer. You may not know the name, but if you ever watch Eastenders (I wouldnt if you paid me!), he wrote the theme music.
Well, hopefully not literally true, but here in the UK at least, its the last Bank holiday before Christmas, so in that sense, we’ve reached that landmark of this summer. And guess what, here in the UK, as is traditional, the weather has been pretty awful today. Irony, they arranged the first one day international for today, and it was wiped out without a ball being bowled. Whereas, had it been any other weekend, it would have been yesterday, when the weather was much better! Ah well…
Fortunately, for me at least, I should still have at least 1 more week of high temperatures, when I hit Kansas City in 3 weeks time. Hey, they are getting heat advisories at present, because its too hot! And fine, I wont object too loudly if its only in the 80’s by then, not high 90’s!
Strangely enough, given my job, I havent been at work today, having time to write a blog might be a big giveaway on that to some lol! Not that I mind, because the bus service on a Bank Holiday still runs to a Sunday service. Whatever I say about the trains, at least they’ve caught up with modern life, and run a normal service. Well, as normal as Trans Pennine Express will ever achieve anyway! But the bus companies still think that a Sunday service will suffice on a day when its now just a normal working day for so many.
OK, so neither has yet caught up to the fact that Sunday’s are much the same, and sadly its a fact of life thats unlikely to change. But Bank holidays, seriously…? Anyway, I’m not going to change the logic of this, but no harm in trying?
Me, I’ve got 1 more bank holiday before Christmas, but only because I will be in the US for Thanksgiving. That is definitely something I’m looking forward to. But first, now in under 3 weeks, that visit to Jean Harlow’s birthplace. Will her ghost be there to greet me? I doubt it, but you never know! 😉
The video, well maybe the boys, and girls of summer arent gone yet, but the UK bank holidays have
Depending on your opinion of things, something has either gone right, or wrong this summer so far, the weather is gorgeous. So much so, I cant remember the last time I shut my bedroom window at night. Yes, I know, tempting fate and all that, but lets chance it. Fine, so July and August over here, should be hot and sunny, but how often of late it hasnt been, is a moot point.
Hey, not only am I wearing a skirt to work now, better ventilation and all that, I’m wearing a thin summer skirt, albeit one down close to my ankles, but thats due to the state of my knees, more than anything else. No, I dont plan on pushing my luck with summer dresses for work, though I went out in one today, albeit most of the time in a car, but at present, I really dont need more. Mind, I do wonder if anyone at work would blink if I did wear a dress to work, but not likely to find out! Well, maybe something less flimsy on Boxing Day, when its a taxi both ways, but they should have forgotten I said that by then lol!
But…it reached 85 here today, and is still 79, even after 8.00 (data care of Weather channel website), but compared to Kansas City, its not that hot, its currently 98 there, mid afternoon! Yes, I know, by September it should have calmed down a bit, but even so…Maybe the brave folk of Missouri and Kansas will have to put up with the sight of my knees, in a shorter skirt! Summer dress, we will see…Lets just say that Albany, in November will need something warmer!
Only snag is, getting to enjoy it. Yesterday I did 10.5 hours at work, tomorrow its 11.75! Yes, some of it is self inflicted overtime, but even so…Mind, I wont be complaining in a few months time about it, will I? 😉 Funny, normally I’m not one for overtime, but this is the last week where the extra pay will go into the August pay packet, to help with holiday costs, so…
Oh fine, you’ve guessed the video? Some shocking sideburns here, I guess things were different in 1970?
