Yes, the blog title is generally used to describe something that is never going to happen. Thing is, at least in Hell, Michigan, due to the Polar Vortex that settled over the mid west of the US, it really did freeze over, nearly minus 50, in fact, allowing for wind chill! To add, before anyone else points it out, there is also a place named Hell, in Norway, which I suspect freezes over at some points most winters, but fine, too many American’s dont know there is a world outside their country, but anyway… Well, maybe Canada, and probably Mexico nowadays, but beyond that…?
I have to say that I have no idea what a temperature that low would be like, nor do I want to find out what its like. Ironically, just over 16 years ago, I experienced my personal outdoor low, of about minus 25, which was a similar temperature to the actual one in the Polar Vortex zone, only I had no notable wind chill factor for either of mine.
The highest temperature I have ever experienced outdoors is just over 100 (these are all F, by the way) in Los Angeles. Remarkably, this was in October! I strolled back from an evening outdoor roof movie, after 10 at night, and it was still 100 then! I have now done 140 in an infra red sauna, but have no desire to top that, however much my back might like me to do so!
But yes, the next time someone suggests something totally impossible, dont say those famous words about hell freezing over, because it already has!
OK, video time. I know its a bit late for Christmas Carols, but this one just seemed so pertinent, and apt, considering we’re talking about hell. A bit like all those Christians that think Jesus Christ was born white, the chances of a bleak, deeply frozen winter in Israel are very unlikely, but of course these words were written in UK, at a time when winters really were this cold, and bitter.
Fine, you’ll get the joke when we get to the video, I hope?
Though its nowhere near as cold here as it is in the US Mid West at present, temperatures above freezing are a bit rarer than usual. Friday morning, it was struggling to hit the mid 20’s over here, but conditions outside were passable, so I decided I needed to go for it, to get to work. Given the fragility of my back, I was looking for anything that might help to keep it warm, so I did a quick hunt for some thermal clothing. I managed to find a pair of leggings, but that wasnt my area of issue, but then I found…
About 20 years ago, or so, I had to do a performance in a play, which involved wearing delicate clothing, which couldnt easily be cleaned, so we were provided with full length body suits (Neck to ankle) to wear underneath it, so it wouldnt need to touch skin. I requested a nice silver grey one, cant think why. And yes, I found it on Friday, wondered if I could get close to still getting in it, as it has a zip on the front, and I now have boobs, but…I could! A few of the stitches are frail, but whether thats my little bit of middle aged spread, or just old age, no idea?
Yes, it worked, it definitely kept me a bit warmer than I would have been without it, and the tightness of it acted as compression on the wrist, back, and knees, so… 🙂 The only snag with it, because its only meant to be worn for a few hours at a time, maximum, is that it doesnt have a crotch opening of any kind. Fine for 2 hours on stage, when you wouldnt need to go, but all day, for work, well…? A couple of less than sexy strip downs, lol!
But yes, if you’d told me that an item of tight clothing that I wore about 20 years ago, would still fit me, I’d have laughed at you, but anyway… Yes, I’m now looking at 2 or 3 more (mainly used by actors, or dancers), which I will have to buy myself, cant have everything. I love the effect, they keep me warm (most critically, my back), and they’re fun to wear. I know, this will probably be the end of winter, but besides that… Oh, and did you know, you can get them in metallic silver, though not sure I’d wear that one to work!
Right, video time. Its not quite been 24 months sitting next to someone at work, but its been quite a while. Sadly, now I’ve got to get used to not sitting next door to him, as he left our department yesterday. And actually this song is best known for a version by a Bradford band, Smokie. However, they werent the first to record it, this group were!
As some readers may already know, and others outside of the UK might not, summer has officially arrived here in the UK of late, and quite delightfully so, for me. Why, you might ask? Simple, as with so many joint issues, they tend to flare up in cold, or damp weather (or worse, both), and ease to some degree when the weather is warm/hot, and dry.
So yes, at present, I’m in a lot less pain than I was a few weeks ago, when it was cold, and damp, shall we diplomatically say? In truth, I have contemplated easing off on the meds while its like this, but in truth, I’m practical, would hate to have any issues, of my own making, so have stuck to standard levels of painkillers for now. Mind, I’m due my quarterly review on Thursday, and I’m sure the matter is going to be discussed. After all, the Naproxen was only meant to be a top up while the weather was bad, so whether I really need it currently, who knows? But yes, I’ll let the medical experts make the call on that! Have to say that its lovely that on an evening like this, I can sit here typing this, not wearing the brace. Mind, it might mainly be because, being neoprene, I sweat like hell underneath it when the weather is like this, and even if I could do with losing a couple of pounds, maybe, thats not my planned way, or probably the best way of doing it!
As previously mentioned, I did a pre retirement course through work yesterday, and a rewarding experience it was too. Fine, a lot of it related to Civil Servants, with decades of work, and very nice pension funds, unlike my modest amount, but it gave me things to think about, and plan for my future. Hopefully I’ve got nearly another 6 years to give that pot a boost, but whether my back will let me go on, that long, I wouldnt put good money on it. Of course, a new option could come into my life anyway, and change matters, and I dont just mean the lottery jackpot at work, because I’ve never won anything in life, so cant see that happening. Yes, a jackpot win would very quickly see retirement on the grounds of health, believe me! I’d love to say enough to move somewhere hot, all year round, but given there are about 25 of us in the syndicate, it would need to be a rollover jackpot to do that on my own basis, probably!
Yes, I notice the difference with the weather. When its bad weather (cold, damp, or both), the 0.7 miles from work to bus station (or other way round) seems like the end of a marathon by the time I get there. Even in average weather, its about my limit. In the heat of yesterday (Low 80’s, I guess), I walked back from the course location, to Leeds station, about a mile, no issues whatsoever! Was just starting to tire at the end, but seriously… And yes, in Seattle, I was probably doing as much, if not more, at times!
So yes, somewhere warm/hot to live, post retirement, I really need to! Either that, or find someone daft enough to marry me, who lives somewhere hot, lol!
Right, video time. I’m sure many will have worked out the song tonight already. Of course The Kinks couldnt do anything too seriously, so they filmed the video on a freezing cold day in winter!
Oh, and as an added extra, another song of a very similar title, from about 10 years later, though to some degree, it sounds like something from 30 years earlier. Well, maybe not the electric guitar, but…
Oh fine, I’ll admit it, I’ve definitely started to get a case of ‘cell fever’ having been stuck indoors since last Tuesday morning, because of all the snow, ice, and stuff like that. I have to admit though, that its been nice being able to take ‘snow days’ from work since then (total of 3 work days), and not have to risk slipping over outside, and damaging knees, back, or both! Especially the latter, as I dread to think what further damage I could have done by going out, slipping over, and landing on my back, but anyway… It is still white out in the garden at present, but most of the snow is gone, the temperature is above freezing, so unless something dramatic happens overnight, I should get ‘release’ tomorrow to go back to work. Thankfully, if I believe the Weather Channel website forecast for next 10 days or so, I should be fine now, through to after my birthday. I know temperatures in the 40’s are hardly amazing, but a lot better than low 20’s!
The silly thing is, normally I can get by on less painkillers when not working, but yes, fine, that doesnt work so well in freezing conditions! Actually, I’ve only got 4 more working days as a 50 something now, as I’m off the week of my birthday. Mainly because of that, but yes, there is a little racing event called the Cheltenham Festival too, to enjoy as well. Irony, unless I remember to switch it on at the hotel in Blackpool, I’ll end up missing the biggest race of the week, the Gold Cup, despite that.
Oh, and another moment that shows I’m getting old, the rail trip will be made on a Senior Railcard, my first time. Yes, that hasnt changed from being available at 60! In fact, its available at that age for men too! The card might be £30, but by the time you add this trip in, the one to Scotland in September, a possible one from Manchester Airport in May, before anything else, I’ll easily cover the cost.
One other trip I need to book too, the one to Newcastle for work, which should be fine, seeing they’ve now had a week to register my account, and it should take 2 working days! Yes, had planned to do it Wednesday, but then the snow happened, so… And yes, tax payers, I will be using my Senior Railcard to save your money!…angel… Cheapest centrally based hotel available, with internet for me, I’m positive.
But yes, it will be nice tomorrow to actually be able to go out the front door, and ‘escape’ for a few hours, even if it will be at work. I like it here, a lot, but after nearly a week indoors…
An amusing moment before I go. You might remember I ordered a maxi length flapper dress for my work birthday dinner next Saturday? Well, comments on Amazon said it was too long, but I thought that just meant for women of short, to medium height, not to women of my height, at 5′ 9″ tall! Wrong, it actually needs taking up so I can walk in it, and as a good flapper girl should, show a bit of ankle! No, you dont want me showing knees lol, which is why I got a maxi one! Still, matter of getting it taken up is in hand, so… In truth, I’ll probably take it to Blackpool with me, just in case, as a back up.
Right, video time. You might have worked out the song, or maybe not, but you wont have guessed the singer, because its not Crowded House. One of the great ‘lesser known’ British voices of so many tears now!
Well, maybe I have been talking to myself, and feeling old? Fine, if that, and the blog title dont give you a clue to the video tonight, you’re way too young! Unlike me, but anyway…
I dont ever remember school closing for bad weather, but then again, that was about 50 years ago, so I’ve either forgotten, or it never happened? And given my first year at school included the brutal winter of 1962/63, I might be wrong, but hey, I was only 4, or 5 at the time, so something like that would easily pass me by, I guess? Nowadays, it seems to happen in a lot of winters. Is it just health and safety, is it just people getting softer, or is it quite possibly, the thought that if someone has an accident in said weather, that accident compensation claims will fly like confetti?
Up until yesterday, I’d had one day off work since moving up to Yorkshire, due to the weather, and even then, I walked into Huddersfield through the snow (about 2 miles), and it was only when I got to the railway station, to find that no trains were running, that I gave up on the prospect of getting to work that day. Yes, I then walked back home, there was no public transport whatsoever. But then again, I was healthy back then, so…
As those in the UK know, and maybe others too (at least 1 US friend commented on our winter weather overnight), we’ve had a ‘bit’ of snow this week. And yes, fine, at the time I was due to leave for work, the buses were running, just. Let me add, that about 35 minutes after that scheduled time, both the buses from the estate, and the buses to Bradford got suspended for a while. So whether I would have got to work, who knows?
As you might have gathered already, I have no idea on that, I never left home. Nowadays, there is an allowance called ‘snow days’ for when travel to work, especially for as distant as I am, is tricky, or impossible, you dont go. Normally you’d go to your nearest office (I could have gone to Job Center in town, I’m sure), but it was quickly agreed that I would be going no further than the front door. Lets face it, the last thing you’d want is me trying to get into town, having an incident, and being out of action for months, due to my back, or my knee issues. Not that I’m one of those ‘sue at all cost’ types, but still, if I damaged my back really badly…?
In truth, its no better today, and I doubt it will be much better in the morning, but I will see what its like before making a decision on that. I have this old fashioned feeling called guilt over such matters, even if it is the sensible thing to do. But fine, if its really crazy to try to get to work? I know, if it wasnt for my back, I would probably have tried it yesterday, but age, wisdom, and pain have made me more cautious, I guess? Ah well…?
Oh, and second piece of amusement, I’ve decided to give into modernity, and get a mobile phone. A very basic one, as a birthday present, but in truth, probably a wise call. I’m sure it will only get used in emergencies, or as on my birthday, as a means to call for a taxi (at Blackpool, to get from station to hotel, would be one of those), maybe? But fine, I’m getting old, I’m getting fragile (fine in both cases, should be got, not getting, probably), so having something like that to hand, not a daft idea. But yes, nice and simple, it will make and receive calls, it will be able to send and receive text messages (dont wait for me to do so), but that will be it! Oh fine, if you believe rumors, lots of 20’s and 30’s movie stars had one, care of time travel lol. I mean, there are pictures, there is film on You Tube, and…I’ll stop laughing now! But I wont be advertising the number, for sure!
Oh, and one last thing to show I’m old. This weekend (tomorrow, if I need another snow day), I’ll be ordering a Senior Railcard for myself. Yes, you can still get those at 60 (regardless of gender), and you can place the order online 14 days before your birthday. So… Will definitely get used this month, thats for sure. Blackpool (for myself), and Newcastle (for work) will both be a third cheaper thanks to it. Fine, it costs £30, but when you add in Scotland, in September… way in front!
OK, video time. Big clues at the start. Sadly, one lady who has never had to concern herself with the issue of getting old, she died far too young!
No, dont worry, it was nothing significant today when I woke up, and though we’ve had a few snow showers during the day, it still hasnt amounted to anything dramatic. Yes, I hope its the same when I get up in the morning, though if you believe the so called weather experts, I might be disappointed. They do say the worst day will be Thursday, when thankfully I dont have to leave home, but I wouldnt mind even that being something that doesnt come true.
To show how slight it was up here, the buses kept running, no issues. And lets face it, they are more than happy to stop running at the slightest excuse. Yes, I walked through snow on the way to Physio this morning, though such an insignificant amount that even a ‘frail old lady’ like me could cope with it, very easily. To be fair, I think its been worse down south, than up here, but believe me, I have no desire to go and investigate that.
Therefore I was surprised when I reached the Physio clinic this morning, to hear that I was the first to turn up for my appointment. Yes, there should (probably) have been 3 ahead of me, and the 1 behind me had cancelled too. Yes, there was snow on the ground, but no, it wasnt slippery out, and the roads were clear, as per the fact that the buses were all running around town.
Of course, to be fair to those people, as the clinic said, most, if not all of those people would have been older than me, and lets face it, you have to have some level of frailty to be going for Physio in the first place! Still…?
I have to admit, in advance of my last treatment next Tuesday, that I can honestly say my knees havent felt as good as they do now, in years. I’d love to say thats just down to the electricity that has got pulsed through my knee, but I’d be lying if I did. Not saying that that, and the ultrasound treatments havent played a big part, but so have the very simple exercises I have to do, as they have definitely strengthened the muscles in both knees that needed it. Oh, and the electrics have definitely made my circulation better, both my feet are pink (or almost pink) again, as blood has started to be forced to flow down to them. The old scars on the right knee are never going to go away fully, but they’re far less noticeable too, for the same circulatory reasons.
Now, if only she could zap my back (or my whole body?) like that…? 😀
But yes, seriously, I’ll be glad when the weather gets a lot warmer, especially for my back. Unless someone wants to buy me a home, somewhere with all year round heat…? No, thought not!
OK, video time. Its the wrong type of weather, technically, but its a gorgeous song, so lets roll with it tonight
Indeed, if you believed the idiots doing the long range weather forecasts 2 months ago, we should now be in the middle of continuous snow, from mid November, until mid March. Yes, we had a little bit of snow, briefly, but that was it! The irony is that this is about the 4th winter in a row that they have forecast Arctic conditions for months on end. We could still have some yet, but I wont hold my breath!
So this is it, the last post before Christmas Day. The rest of the week will include the traditional review of the year, though it might get a bit unbalanced, as a lot more happened in the last 4 months, than in the first 8, so it will probably end up being split that way. There will also be the traditional look forward piece, all the things I’m expecting to happen, a few that could happen (some more unlikely than others), and a few that would be fun, but almost certainly wont happen! So yes, a dreamed of, alien abduction might just appear in that last section lol!
Well, I know of 2 presents, one that I specifically requested when asked for, and one because we were expected to open our ‘Secret Santa’ presents at work. Beyond that, no idea! Nothing dramatic, I’m sure. Definitely safe to say no alcohol this year. A maxi length flapper style dress would be fun, but given that no one has asked my clothes sizing, I’m pretty sure thats not coming. Not that flappers did maxi length dresses, but I’m not 20 something any more! Was I ever, lol? Oh, the delights I missed out on by not being a girl when I was younger!
So yes, Santa, if you want to arrange for me to wake up in the morning, as a young lady, with a cute figure, and all the right bits, I would be so grateful!
Oh, and lastly, it seems that I’m going to reprise the Elf role quite quickly, tomorrow in fact, for a young lady visiting here at present. Wasnt my planned outfit for tomorrow, but will sure be fun, all the same.
So, at this point, I’ll take the opportunity to wish all my readers, a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, or Seasons Greetings, whichever you prefer. Yes, thats definitely the Civil Service neutrality option lol. Tonights video is probably my favorite Christmas song, probably because its not your usual saccharine effort, just the opposite in fact. Sadly, Greg Lake is no longer with us, but thats no reason not to play this live version, all the same.
I hope you get the Christmas you deserve! 😉
I’m sure most people have noticed that Hurricane Matthew has been blowing its destructive way across the Caribbean islands, and up the East Coast of the US by now. If not, why not, as its been on the news everywhere. My sympathies go out to all affected by it, I might add.
Firstly, last night, I briefly tuned into the college game going on in North Carolina, and to say it was wet there, would be putting it mildly. They battled through the game, though I gather, hardly surprisingly that the weather had an effect on the quality of play.
So fine, at 9.00 in my time zone, I wasnt surprised to find out that the baseball game in Washington had been wiped out by the weather, even if it wasnt as bad there as further down the coast, it was bad enough! Ironically, thats an advantage for me, because its now being played (as I type) in Washington, and I can watch it all, as opposed to last night, when I would have missed the end of it. I also got to see Game 1 (middle of the night job) on a recording, as the TV channel had to fill the space where it should have been, so… Yes, this Dodgers fan is hoping they can win again tonight!
I’ve also just heard that due to weather (remnants of hurricane, I suspect), the game in Boston tonight will now be happening tomorrow! What I get in coverage tomorrow night, depends on a result I will only discover in the morning, might only be part of the Dodgers game, in LA, before bed, or I might have a game in Toronto too, pretty much in full.
I’ve never been in a hurricane, tornado, or anything like that, and I’m happy for it to stay that way. Seemingly I’ve experienced a couple of (very minor) earthquakes in LA, but nothing that anyone would even comment on, in that area at least. Yes, I just hope they’re not saving the big one for next May lol!
OK, video time. Maybe completely asexual, and lesbian preferring bisexual wouldnt be so interested in this sort of event, but hey, its a very apt, classic gay anthem, so…
Yes, in case you were wondering, I am being facetious. I’ll be honest, this morning, I had to wonder if I was in Yorkshire, or Alaska! I must admit, I dont think I’ve ever been caught in a snow storm, at the end of April before! I’ve seen snow in April before, many times, but we’re nearly into May, and seriously…! To be fair, it didnt actually settle on the ground here, though it did in other places around here, a little more rural, or at a higher altitude. But to be fair, that wasnt much consolation this morning.
Thats right, the day I had to go into town, to sign on, it decided to blow up a snow storm. Yes, seriously, I thought I was signing on in Anchorage, or somewhere, judging by the weather conditions in town! Thankfully it wasnt too long a walk from the bus stop, to the job centre, but even so, I was covered in snow on arrival. By the time I came back out, it was easing off, though still snowing, but getting very fine, verging on rain. By the time I got back home, about 15 minutes later, it was just beginning to leave off, even raining. But yes, just for the time I was out, I felt like Elsa the Eskimo!
The rest of the day, not been too bad, though I have no idea how cold it was out there, I havent ventured out since. But fine, on Sunday, we enter May, and yet we are still having snow storms, crazy!
Yes, and to think, this time last year (I had in fact, strictly, been back a couple of days), I was enjoying the heat, and sun, in Hollywood!
Right, the video. Well, this morning, I was walking in the snow, but this is as close as I could get!
OK, fine, I’ve cheated for once. Thats not a major clue to the blog material, nor is it the title song of the video…quite. But for all that, there is a link to the video in tonight’s edition.
OK, going back to Tuesday, and this is where the video connection kicks in, Pasadena. Yes, I went there on my trip out. There was a reason for going there (beyond an interesting place to visit) but that will get mentioned when we get to the tune. Pleasant enough place, had a nice lunch, had a look around a couple of nice (value) clothes shops, before heading to the big mall, which seems a bit of a work in progress at the moment. Oh, the cute moment, I went and had a facial, the first time in the US. There were a couple of differences to norm, the first one being the abundant use of steam in the first part, presumably to moisten the face, which it certainly did. Oh, and a few ‘toys’ used on my face, I have no idea what, but presumably its meant to strengthen the skin, or something? Then the fun started. Well, fine, strictly, I had an ice cream first, but then went to get the bus home.
For some reason best known to myself, I didnt wait for the express bus back, I got the stopping one. Fine, I was in no rush, but…Yes, there were a few, err, interesting passengers on board, shall we say, and leave it at that? Given I was rather warm (putting it very mildly) by the time I got back, I passed on the movie that evening.
Yesterday was a quiet day, and a livelier evening. Yes, off to see some nice vintage clothing, and spend some money! A dress, a pants suit, a couple of skirts, and a couple of pair of slacks (one of which is cream silk, Jean would love) later, then back into town. Fine, not without incident. I got dropped off, And dropped to the ground. Yes, I hadnt notice the concrete block, and tumbled straight over it. Scraped my right knee a bit, and its stiffened up a bit, but nothing serious.
So today, I’ve taken things relatively easy. A short trip up to the shopping centre at Glendale by bus, and back, and that was it. Nice enough place, but nothing exciting, but at least I now know that.
Tomorrow, a lot depends on how my knee is, and the weather. Yes, it might rain, and thunder a lot, but it might just pass us by. There have been rain, and thunderstorm warnings broadcast tonight in fact, for an area just a little way north of here, in Antelope Valley. Flash flooding, so I’m told, oh wow! Nothing here however, yet!
Right, the video. When I was much younger, there was a group called Manhattan Transfer. They worked with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, a lot of the time. So yes, the Pasadena connection, and who is providing the music tonight. A real old song, to put it mildly
