Indeed, if you believed the idiots doing the long range weather forecasts 2 months ago, we should now be in the middle of continuous snow, from mid November, until mid March. Yes, we had a little bit of snow, briefly, but that was it! The irony is that this is about the 4th winter in a row that they have forecast Arctic conditions for months on end. We could still have some yet, but I wont hold my breath!
So this is it, the last post before Christmas Day. The rest of the week will include the traditional review of the year, though it might get a bit unbalanced, as a lot more happened in the last 4 months, than in the first 8, so it will probably end up being split that way. There will also be the traditional look forward piece, all the things I’m expecting to happen, a few that could happen (some more unlikely than others), and a few that would be fun, but almost certainly wont happen! So yes, a dreamed of, alien abduction might just appear in that last section lol!
Well, I know of 2 presents, one that I specifically requested when asked for, and one because we were expected to open our ‘Secret Santa’ presents at work. Beyond that, no idea! Nothing dramatic, I’m sure. Definitely safe to say no alcohol this year. A maxi length flapper style dress would be fun, but given that no one has asked my clothes sizing, I’m pretty sure thats not coming. Not that flappers did maxi length dresses, but I’m not 20 something any more! Was I ever, lol? Oh, the delights I missed out on by not being a girl when I was younger!
So yes, Santa, if you want to arrange for me to wake up in the morning, as a young lady, with a cute figure, and all the right bits, I would be so grateful!
Oh, and lastly, it seems that I’m going to reprise the Elf role quite quickly, tomorrow in fact, for a young lady visiting here at present. Wasnt my planned outfit for tomorrow, but will sure be fun, all the same.
So, at this point, I’ll take the opportunity to wish all my readers, a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, or Seasons Greetings, whichever you prefer. Yes, thats definitely the Civil Service neutrality option lol. Tonights video is probably my favorite Christmas song, probably because its not your usual saccharine effort, just the opposite in fact. Sadly, Greg Lake is no longer with us, but thats no reason not to play this live version, all the same.
I hope you get the Christmas you deserve! 😉
Oh fine, just a quick one, but for the wrong reason, it gives me the chance to put up the video for what is probably my favourite Christmas song of all time, because I’m perverse like that.
Back in the 1970’s I was more into Glam Rock, than Prog Rock, so the likes of King Crimson, and ELP (with the exception of ‘Fanfare for a common man’) pretty much passed me by. But in those good old days, before X Factor and the like, the leading acts went crazy at Christmas, and issued records specifically aimed at that time of year. Fine, Slade and Wizzard might have been more serious attempts than say, The Wombles, but anyway…
Then in 1974, along came the song that for want of a better term, was the antithesis of the standard Christmas hit. The one looking at the cynical commercialisation of the event, and a jaded look at all the wars going on in the world at that time. Yes, Greg Lake. Amazing thing is, how many dont realise it is anti the traditional Christmas scene, especially in shops at this time of year.
Anyway, yesterday, I heard the sad news, Greg has died at 69, another victim of cancer. So yes, you’re getting the obvious RIP tribute song from me.
Well, not here in Yorkshire, at least. Wind, and rain most definitely, but snow, no chance! How much of that is just the way the weather is at present, or whether its down to climate change, who knows? A bit of each, I suspect?
Thats it, any shopping not done, is now not going to get done, though ironically, the local express Supermarket (Tesco) is open until 10.00 tonight, even on Christmas Eve! Poor staff, I say. Yes, I went down early this afternoon, thinking I needed to get in, before they shut early, and lo and behold…!
Tomorrow, I wont be opening any presents. No, not because I havent got any, I will have a very small number, but for a good reason. The others here are away until Sunday, and we’ve decided we’re going to leave everything until they get back, and then do it as a group. Yes, I could have done mine tomorrow regardless, but lets face it, at my age, I’m in no rush in such matters.
Well, put it this way, unless someone has sneaked a brainwashing, or mind control helmet into my gifts, or a full robot suit that actually would change my body, I’m in no rush. And no, I’ve seen nothing like that, so I’ll wait! Yes, before anyone shows concern, I’ve got a roast dinner for tomorrow, and enough Christmas pudding to keep me well and truly filled too! Fine, if there’s a voucher for a full Jean Harlow makeover (preferably of the permanent kind), I would love that too, but again… Beyond that, I wouldnt mind waking up, and finding something missing, that would be the best present of all. 😉
And so to close, by wishing all my readers a Merry Christmas, and hoping you get all you hope for tomorrow.
Lastly, the video. One of my favourite Christmas songs of all time, a live version. Oh, and the blog title is a line in the song…almost!
No, dont worry, seriously, at my age, I dont. I cant remember at what age I discovered the truth, but its fair to say it was well over 40 years ago, probably 45! 45 would be very apt for a music video, hope some are old enough to get that in-joke! 😉
Trouble is, I believe Father Christmas could make a better job of running my trains than Trans Pennine Express do! The new winter timetable started last Sunday, not that there were any differences for me that I noticed at least. So far, 9 journeys (got a lift home Sunday evening) since then, of which 5 have been on trains arriving more than 10 minutes late. Well, in fact the best of those is 14 minutes, but you get my drift, 10 is a nice round number. Today they got the double. Yesterday was the Christmas miracle, both were on time! So yes, 5 journeys badly delayed, a grand total so far of 84 minutes this week. Will they get the unwanted century tomorrow, I wouldnt want to bet against it!
Its not even like they have been at peak times, one was Sunday morning, the next was early (before 7) on Monday, and a third was Wednesday evening (just before 9), so hardly peak traffic moments. That could just about be used as a reason for both today, but… I think it really annoys me because fares are going up by about 8% in the new year, but the service is so awful.
Alright, brief rant over.
The song, well if you havent guessed from the title, I’m surprised. Personally I think this is one of those great Christmas songs that seemed to creep under the radar, perhaps because its not all sugar and spice? And yes, you were going to get the Greg Lake version (and I would seek it out if you dont mind repetition), but instead I’m going to offer a version by a promising Irish group, that some may have heard of. Yes, I am being cynical. Bono seems to be one of those love or hate people, so if you hate, then go find Greg Lake instead. Personally I think its quite a good cover though
The next one on Sunday (all things planned) is another anniversary one, for a life taken far too soon. See if you can work out who?
Edit to add,
If it hadnt been for the stopper train being delayed by very late running TPE trains tonight getting into Leeds, I would have got the century, as my planned to get train arrived 17 minutes late!
