Its been a funny sort of week, in truth, in more ways than one.
Earlier this week, the orange, bewigged Russian one threw enough of a temper tantrum that he got his way on one issue that has annoyed him. Seems the rule to stop Transgender people from serving in the American Military forces has been finally passed after numerous efforts. Even more amusing of course, in the week it was announced that one of the General’s who helped to fight for the independence of his country (assuming it isnt Russia?) was either a woman, or even more horrible for him, intersex.
The more amusing side of that is that at least 2 states (maybe more?) have already told him that they wont be getting rid of any transgender people already serving in their state military command groups, and will still accept applications from anyone desiring to do so. I’m sure if he hasnt already Tweeted (high security method, not) on the matter, he soon will be.
The other LGBT news I’ve heard today comes care of Australia, Sydney, to be exact
I must admit, there would have been a few cities that if you’d told me would be candidates to do it, Sydney would have been one of them. Thank you for the gesture. Not that I guess I would ever have seen it, even if my body hadnt totally given up on me, thats far too far away, but at least I know its there, which is something. Somehow I cant see the guy mentioned previously will be rushing to use that crossing somehow. I’d love to, but now especially, I think I might have to pass on that.
Why, you ask? Well, a couple of days ago, I had to post a letter to work, re my health issues, and I thought that as the post box was only about 200 yards away, and no one else was readily available to post it, I’d give it a go, and see how it went. Well, going down the hill was ‘interesting’ but I survived, just. Snag is, I then had to come back up the hill, and that was a whole different game! I did make it, but it hurt! I’ve also noticed that the stairs at home, when I’m carrying anything (especially full cups), are distinctly becoming a challenge, coming up. So yes, the old girl is definitely busted, for sure. I suspect unless something dramatic can be done to me, I wont be walking far in future. 😦
Oh, and talking of busts… As some already know, and others will now know, I look like I’ve got a decent cleavage. No, its not some magical hormone, or the fact I have a friendly fairy godmother who provided me with a decent pair of boobs. Believe me, if the latter was the case, I’d have got her to remove something else at the same time! Many women are unfortunate enough to have mastectomies due to breast cancer, a charity whose cause I used to support when I had any money. For those women, prosthetics are provided that give the image that they still have breasts. I’m not the only Transgender women that uses them, I’m sure, but we arent strictly the main market for them. These silicon breasts are fantastic, give a great look, are designed to be about the right weight, and are great, providing you dont put too much weight on them. I dont, I have a foam pair I use at night (vanity, I know), which can take just about anything. Of course, when I was in hospital, the pair I was using were the silicon ones, and they didnt take kindly to being slept in, especially the one on the side I slept on. So yes, its a bit damaged, and I’ve had to buy a new pair which arrived this week. More expense, ah well… Mind, if anyone knows of a similar vagina I could wear 24/7, without toilet issues, please let me know. Hiding ‘that thing’ would be heaven, and far less painful than surgery!
Right, video time. Bit of a clue in the blog title, how original!
Fine, there is one political item tonight I’d love to comment on, but I mustn’t, I really shouldn’t, so I wont! But will I take a swipe at someone else in politics, oh fine, I will, seeing he’s not in the UK. 😛
The tale that had me roaring with laughter this morning was the news that Donald Trump had invited the Clemson college football team to the White House, given they won the National Championship recently.
Given that the percentage of white players in American Football isnt all that high, I’m slightly surprised they accepted the invitation to the White House anyway. Of course, how many turned up out of the team group, I have no figures.
Anyway, the picture showed a number of them turning up to the big event, immaculately dressed, with expectations of a fine meal provided, to discover a large pile of burgers to greet them! Yes, still in the boxes, in fact. Meaning a lot of them were probably less than hot too.
The thing is, I know these players tend to be on the large side, so I assume he thought they’d just eat anything, right? Truth is, most of these players probably avoid large amounts of fat, but besides all that…
I know, due to his own stupidity, most of the staff at the White House are currently not working, because he threw a temper tantrum, possibly under instructions from his best buddy in Russia! But if you are seriously telling me that the best he could find, even if he couldnt have simply bought in some staff to provide a feast (he is a billionaire, allegedly), was McDonalds, and the like, its not saying much, is it?
Oh, and according to the bewigged, orange one, he ordered Hamberders. Yes, seriously, according to his own Tweet! Ah well…
No, I’m not a big burger eater, especially of the fast food variety kind. In truth, I cant remember the last time I ate one! So yeah, when it comes to the video, I’m going to pick something with a cynical look at this item of food. I suspect many havent heard of Lorraine Bowen, but maybe you should? Warning, this video is only for over 18 viewers, just saying…
Well, I must admit, when I avoided discussing the Brexit vote on Sunday, I wasnt expecting this position, though in truth, I’m not totally surprised it did. Yes, the vote that was due to happen in Parliament today, over the Brexit agreement was cancelled yesterday, when I think even Theresa May realised it was going to end in crushing defeat, and there wasnt a lot she could do about that. The irony of this being that she cant get the votes from the rabid Brexiteers of her party (not extreme enough), or those who wanted to remain (not a sane deal), which just sums it up
So, to quote the blog title, what happens now? In truth, the only answer I can offer, no idea! The media seem nearly as clueless as the politicians on the matter, as I’ve heard answers from every point on the spectrum from Brexit being cancelled, to just crashing out of the EU, and pure chaos ensuing. Or, of course, just about anywhere in between!
It seems May is going to try to renegotiate, even though the EU have clearly said thats not going to happen. Lets face it, why should they want to offer us the most perfect deal, its not in their best position to do so. I’m going to manage to stay neutral on this for one good reason, neither of the major parliamentary parties seem to have half an idea on how to resolve this matter! I also feel less guilty if I do slip up, as I’ve seen 2 colleagues posting decidedly non politically neutral postings on the event today on social media, anyway, lol! 😛 Before anyone says this is anti Conservative bias, I’m not a fan of Corbyn either!
Oh, and to put it into context, without mentioning how I voted again, you could always just look back to my blogs, at the time of the vote (pre Civil Service job days, so could comment) to see how I voted, lol. 😉
The interesting (and possibly fun) thing is, that at some point, May needs to put something to a vote, and given the wide spectrum of feeling in her own party, and the fact that the opposition just want to vote against her regardless, it looks like she will lose the vote at some point, assuming she hasnt been dethroned by her party before then, and nothing would surprise me at present.
My dream outcome, that the office lottery syndicate win the jackpot before March 29, I can declare retirement, and hurry off somewhere hot all the year round, and yes, I might have been there recently, lol. Both so I’m out the country should chaos break out (and medicines is one big issue that concerns me a lot), and so that I can retire comfortably in the EU sun! Well, unless some wealthy American in a warm state goes crazy, and marries me, lol, anyway. Or I find a ‘sugar daddy (or mummy) who wants to set me up somewhere suitably warm. Think the former is more likely than the last two, and thats saying something!
Oh, and two additional amusing moments with a political touch today. Firstly, Theresa May went to see Angela Merkel in Germany today about the current chaos. Funny point, her car door wouldnt open, and let her out. Eventually she did get out, but fine, the film is all over Social Media now, hilarious stuff.
Secondly, in the US, Trump was made to look the fool he is today, when meeting with a pair of leading Democrats, over his desire to build a wall between the US, and Mexico. Yes, he made the threat to shut down the US if he didnt get his way, like a very spoilt child, and they managed to get it recorded for posterity. Way things are going, with luck, some time in the near future there will be a wall around him, a prison wall!
Fine, lets call it quits here, and hope its UK neutral enough, lol. So, video time. A song from Evita, with a very apt line, repeated numerous times.
And as promised a week ago, on the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, and in the eleventh hour in east coast US zone, by the time I finish this, we are one hundred years on from the end of the great insanity that was World War 1. Of course that orange, wigged buffoon from the US couldnt even be bothered to turn up at the US Military Graves for those of his country that fell there in the Great War, because of a little bit of rain. Poor thing, but I bet if they were Russian, his boss would have made him turn up, but anyway…
I actually went to see a good play this week put on by the drama group in Cookridge, which a couple of my fellow workers were taking part in. Too late for you to go now, but they put on a good show. And its from that, that I got the blog title, the not unreasonable line about lions being led by donkeys. Because, sadly, its true, most of the so called leaders of the war force were barely able to tie up shoe laces, judging by their decisions, let alone send brave young men into war, many to meet their death, at far too young an age.
To put it into perspective, if I remember the figures rightly, the group of ‘Yorkshire Pals’ that the play was about on Thursday, 900 men went over the top at the Battle of the Somme, only 150 even made it to the assembly point a few hundred yards ahead of them. The rest of them died, some quite literally never to be seen again.
The thing is, some of the leaders knew what a disaster this was, as I read this morning of Lloyd George, trying to convince a young relative of the Canadian Ambassador not to go to the front, as he wished to. The comment was that things were ‘bad for our forces’, an understatement if ever there was one.
The biggest irony, and leadership incompetence however, was saved for this date, 100 years ago. On this date, an attack was launched, leading to about 2000 young men dying, when the leaders knew that the Armistice was being declared about 3 hours later! I think calling them donkeys, would be insulting donkeys, in truth.
Anyway, 100 years on from that date, let us all remember those ‘brave lions’ that died in that war, and try to forget the ‘idiot donkeys’ that led them there. RIP!
Right, the blog has been serious, the video is not. I need to do something lighthearted for the event, or I’ll scream, so…
For reference, Pat & Stanley are the 2 in the video. As far as I can tell, the singing is the version by The Tokens
Oh fine, I wasnt going to post again tonight, but enough has happened today to make it worthwhile, so lets roll with it.
The day started with some amusement, and helped to convince me that Trump followers really are idiots, or some of them, anyway. It actually started positively (if you ignore the earlier sighting on news of Trump doing a fist pump at a 9/11 memorial service, for heavens sake. Is he, and his fans complete idiots? Oh fine, seemingly, but more on that shortly.
Some very efficient service from a nice man at Scotrail assistance, means Eric will not need to walk miles at Edinburgh Waverley on the return journey, assistance arranged! But then to today’s journey, and the moment of idiocy. There were at least 2 signs, that I noticed, advising customers that there were no seat reservations on the train we were catching to Aviemore, due to, as I found out later, a printer issue.
So fine, no great fuss, got in a pair of seats, ready for the journey, and then… This American elderly man, wearing, you’ve guessed it, one of the dreaded M.A.G.A hats came up to us, and told us we were in his reserved seats. I politely explained, just as the conductor was again confirming it over the speaker system, that there were no reserved seats. His only reply (and its fair to comment, there was little sign of intelligence in his eyes, was to repeat what he said, and glare at us again. After 3 rounds of this, I decided that beating my head against a Trump fan, with an IQ roughly around zero, was a pointless exercise, so we gave up, and moved.
He then started bemoaning us to his wife, who miraculously pointed out to him that we were right, there were no reserved seats on the train. Anyway, one of his other companions/family members gave a face that was clean out of Redneck territory at the whole event, best described as a gurn. No, I’m not sure his IQ was as high as zero! Thankfully, we were only going one stop, so soon left them behind, about 35 minutes later.
The steam train ride was nice. Cant remember the last time before this I rode a steam train, definitely cant remember the last time I had a meal on one! Anyway, back to Aviemore at 14.08, and… we proceeded, after about 30 minutes wait, to get the 12.23 to Inverness! No, I’m not kidding, there was an issue with a freight train further down the line, it was running about 2 and a quarter hours late! Now, in this country, when you have this much of a delay, you get a refund on your ticket. Thing is, we were actually booked on an anytime ticket, which even though that wasnt our planned train, we could have claimed for the delay. Thing is, we had reserved seats for the 14.40, so if anyone checked, we werent actually delayed, but a few minutes early.
I’ll be honest, if worthwhile money was involved (£9.75 each), and I wasnt a civil servant, I probably would have gone for it anyway. But yeah, I can just see the headlines, if anyone found out, so for that much money, no go. Honest, but stupid, probably!
Lastly, after we got back to the hotel, and Eric settled down for a nap, I took a stroll back up into Inverness, one last time, probably. I cant see me being back anytime soon, and in truth, a few years after that, I probably, quite literally wont be going anywhere, lol! Body might last a few more years, but I suspect not many, and the odds on being back up here, not good.
So, when I was a child (as I have mentioned before), I had some distant relative who lived in the Highlands, at Kinlochleven, of a very similar age to me. She, as I suspect young Scottish children do, was from time to time, dressed in her clan colors, Maclaine of Lochbuie. At one time, I had a tie, and a plaque in said colors, but both have long since passed from my ownership in time, and moves. Anyway, I thought it might be fun to look for a dress, or skirt in said clan colors, but unsurprisingly, I couldnt find any, its not one of the popular clans, shall we say? But those I did, well over £100, so definitely not going to happen, regardless! Oh fine, lets include the clan name as a category, I might get offered a skirt, or dress in clan colors, though I wont hold my breath on that!
And thats about it! Tomorrow we head back down south, end of the break. Lets just say I’m looking forward to some lay ins, in the morning, for the last 3 days of my break! Eric, please note, lol!
I dont know what to say about video suggestions, to be honest. Last Farewell, Roger Whitaker, maybe?
Edited to add the video from home
I suppose my readers might have worked out by now, that I’m not a fan of Trump. I know, shock horror, and all that. One of the criticisms that so many have made of the Republican party, quite justifiably on the whole, is that no one has had the courage to stand up to his comments, and crazy tweets, but there was at least one man of whom that couldnt be said.
I dont know what John McCain did to annoy Trump, other than not fawning over the ‘Emperor’ and his ‘New Clothes’, but seemingly something did. I’m pretty sure it was the fact that he did tell Trump what he thought about matters, and from time to time, disagreed with him totally. Anyway, for that fact alone, regardless of his political views, I’d have to like him. Maybe it was the fact that he actually served in the military, with honor, something Trump was determined to avoid.
I’m not going to snatch lots of stuff from Wikipedia about the guy to impress you about him, you can do that yourself, if you so desire. In truth, the first time I really came across him, was 2008, when he was the Republican nomination, who lost to Obama. Of course, I had a couple of reasons to want Obama to win, but in a sense, after Bush, he did seem a Republican candidate I could have lived with, but anyway…
Of course, one of the things he did, after falling out with Trump, was to vote down the mess that was the Trump plan to dump Obamacare, in favor of something that would line his friends in the medical industry’s pockets! I’m not saying that compared to our system, Obamacare was perfect, but it was better than previously, and its better than anything Trump wants for non wealthy people in the US. He did that, at a time when he was already critically ill, quite a stand to take.
Anyway, a couple of days he decided to stop fighting the brain cancer he was suffering, and take his chance in the next world. Unsurprisingly, it wasnt long between that decision, and his sad death. I dont know, maybe its because he was an old school Republican, maybe its because he was prepared to say what he thought, not just toe the party line that endeared him to me, but regardless of all that, RIP, John McCain.
OK, the video. 35 years ago, or so, OMD brought out an album that was totally ahead of its time in complexity, Dazzle Ships. I must admit, at that time, I probably didnt get it either, but its one of those things that has developed a fame after its time. I’m not saying I get it entirely, even now, but with the modernity of music, it makes a lot more sense. This wont be everyone’s cup of tea, but then again, neither was McCain, and indeed, neither is Trump!
Oh fine, the amusing irony of tonight’s blog is that I know it will get one like, because a certain person is going to be tagged in this. Why its amusing, is because the guy seemingly loves Trump, and therefore anyone who uses his name as a tag, the blog gets liked, even if the opinion is less than favorable, like mine, because he clearly never bothers to read them. So thanks for the like, ‘Aussie Conservative’, and thanks for not actually reading it.
The previous times I needed a US Visa (long, long before ESTA, and they only work for tourists, anyway) involved going to the US Embassy in London, answering questions, being dutiful, and respectful, and all that. Oh fine, not all tourist visas used to get that treatment, but I suppose from time to time, they had to tick the boxes…But yes, anything more significant, and off to the Embassy you had to go!
The thing is, since those times, terrorism has become more of an issue in the world, and someone has decreed that the old Embassy building in London would have been difficult to protect. So back in 2008, George Bush made plans to move it to a safer building, outside the center of London. Yes, Donald, it wasnt Obama that made the decision, it was a Republican! But lets face it, niceties like the truth have never bothered Trump, so…
So hear we are, 10 years later, and its ready to open. I will miss the old building, and I certainly wont enjoy the extra travel if I have to apply for an Acting Visa, but I’m sure I’ll survive. Probably wont need to concern myself about it, but just in case…? In truth, I’m only assuming that in these days of doing everything online that it isnt initially done over Skype, or something, and only requires a visit in some cases? No idea, if I ever need to find out, I’ll let you know.
The thing is, Trump, as President, was going to come over and open the new Embassy. Then, he got the message delivered to him that, just maybe, he might not get the fawning welcome he was expecting! So he’s decided not to come, and his excuse for not doing so, relates to the baloney about Obama taking the decision to move it (not true), and that it cost too much (pretty much all the cost was recompensed by the sale of the old building), so thats shot him down in flames.
Oh, and on top of that, he’s seemingly sold a large number of fighter planes to Norway that only exist in a video game! Yes, so unless he knows something we dont (stop laughing here!), he’s telling even more lies! I think he has sold some planes, just not the ones he’s claimed to have done! Oh, and he’s described numerous countries (predominantly non white countries) as s**thole countries, so another diplomatic gaffe on top of everything. Anyone would think he was a white supremacist or something? Oh, wait…?
Believe me, I’m glad he’s not coming here, not that I would ever have seen him, mind, but I’m just glad we wont have to stand the taxpayers costs of protecting him. Still one year down, only hopefully 3 to go?
An old classic tonight, from Cat Stevens, who lets face it, Donald wouldnt be a fan of! But I think he sums up his effect perfectly!
Back when the NFL first hit the TV screens over here, in the mid 80’s, it seemed that everyone had to choose a team to support, if you cared for the game at all, and fine, I got hooked on it. However, being perverse, and awkward as I was, and indeed still am, I decided not to pick one of the popular, highly successful teams. Oh no, I decided to attach my limited fandom to a team who were pretty awful, named the Buffalo Bills. As any NFL historian will tell you, that was pretty handy timing. One season after that, the rival USFL league collapsed, the modern day irony relating to that being, that one of the men whose greed brought it down into bankruptcy, was a certain Donald Trump! Definitely not the last time the words, Trump, and bankruptcy have gone together lol!
What that meant was, that a quarterback named Jim Kelly finally signed with the NFL team that had drafted him, the Buffalo Bills. So, all of a sudden, I was supporting a successful team, who went to 4 Superbowls in rapid time, even if they didnt win any! Of course, eventually father time caught up with him, he retired, and Buffalo rapidly slipped back into anonymity again. They are in fact, currently the team who has gone longest since making the play offs. But this year…
There is 3 weeks to go in the season, and they are in a playoff position! In fact, in theory they could still win the division, but they would have to win their last 3 games, the Patriots lose their last 3 games, so not going to happen! But yes, this late in the season, and still in with a chance of making a playoff place, great stuff.
Oh fine, if you believe some of the Forum idiots, they wouldnt be happy until Buffalo had won 25 Superbowls in a row, and might even complain then…Yes, some people are just crazy. And sadly, from what I’ve read from some of them, some are very racist too, ah well…rolls eyes…I’m not!
No, they arent yet guaranteed a playoff place, but its closer than its been in a while. Well…?
Oh, and before anyone says anything about me, and underdogs, and mentions the Dodgers, they are the one exception to the rule. And thats because of the locality, nothing more! 😛
Right, video time. Big clue in the title, as is so often the case with me. This is the 30’s film version, and I do wonder if one of the ladies you briefly see the face of, could be Clara Johnson? Short of trying to stop the film on every shot, compare pictures, and…the likelihood is probably no, anyway!
Much though I hate doing politics, there are times when events happen that just cannot be ignored.
Yes, this weekend in Charlottesville, is the subject I cant ignore. I probably would have diplomatically avoided it, but for the death of one person, ran down by one of the extreme right wingers involved in this ghastly event, and the way that Trump has tried to avoid blaming the ghastly right wing people involved in this, because lets face it, he pretty much supports them! It seems that even after being advised to condemn them, that he couldnt do it! Too busy trying to start a nuclear war with North Korea to care, I guess? Sorry, but thats two people with the IQ, and temperament of infants, playing with very dangerous toys!
My sympathies to the family of poor woman who died, and to all those injured by that idiot yesterday. I only hope he gets punished as he should, but with Trump, and his right wing pals in control, I fail to be convinced of that. But I hope its the case.
The other depressing incident I have to report today, revolves around the fans of a certain NFL team I sort of follow, the Buffalo Bills. Though how much longer I want to follow them, if this is the way the other fans think, I’m not sure?
Yesterday, Marshawn Lynch of the Oakland (for now at least) Raiders, sat through the National Anthem, in support of Colin Kaepernick, amongst others. Kaepernick being the quarterback who knelt through said Anthem last year, in protest at police violence, and has since been seemingly black balled by every NFL team because of it. Given some of the names getting contracts as back up quarterbacks, there is no other good reason, I have to say. Let me add, that its not the first time Lynch has done this, but…some would make you believe it was.
Anyway, if I say that one of the more ‘polite’ comments (and sadly, I’m not being facetious) involved Lynch being so filled with lead that they couldnt put him back together to bury him, it shows what a depressing state of events is prevalent in parts of the US at present. Yes, seriously, there is a difference between being proud of your country, and being a dangerous person, and too many seem to have crossed the line to the latter, now.
No, I’m not a lily livered leftie, before you ask. I see myself as a sane moderate, but yes, some of these people scare me, a lot!
Fine, video time. A song about a massacre by the KKK, surely not? Yes, you got it! An OMD song that not many will know, for sure.
Well, given the ‘love’ there is for Trump on the West Coast of the US, I guess its fair to say that I wasnt totally surprised to hear today that California is talking about having a vote to decide whether, or not they should secede from the rest of the US. I mean, its not like the West Coast hasnt discussed this concept before, as the concept of Pacifica, which would be the 3 west coast states (including Oregon and Washington), parts (at least) of Nevada, and maybe Hawaii would become 1 independent nation. Given that it would include Silicon Valley, the Microsoft technology zone, plus the entertainment belt that is LA, it would probably have quite a decent economy in its own right.
But in truth, I’m not sure its ever got beyond talk, and video games as something that is ever going to happen. I’m only imagining the chaos it could cause, as New England (plus New York, maybe?) might then be tempted to do something similar, and just let the rest of the country get on with their Republican ways. I know, I know, its never going to happen, or seemingly wasnt before the latest Presidential election!
It now seems that California at least, has decided not to bother to wait for anyone else to decide, and are seriously talking about #Calexit, or variations thereon. The irony is, that the vote wont go to the people until next year, and then by the time everything is sorted out, and they are ready to go, well its possible Trump will be ready to go, as it will be 2019! And then, its possible, with their help, they might be getting a Democrat President again, with luck.
Oh fine, it would suit me beautifully if California had a slightly more relaxed immigration policy than the US currently has, but that might only be me dreaming.
To be honest, I have no idea how it would all work out, as logically, their main trading partner would be, you guessed it, the rest of the US. Well, unless anyone else is breaking away by then, and I suspect this might be the start of things, as Oregon and Washington are discussing a Cascadia nation as a result of this, so who knows? On a more pedantic note, how this would work out with their pro sports teams, I’m not quite sure? Having said that, the only one of those sports without teams in Canada is the NFL, so might be the same here?
So yes, I wouldnt mind being a proud owner of a passport from the Republic of California in the future, maybe? 😉
Oh, and while talking about that idiot in charge at present, his move this weekend, blocking Muslim refugees from 7 countries entering the US just stuns me. Funnily enough, those countries that Trump has business interests in, not blocked, hmm?… rolls eyes…
Fine, but just remember me, California, if and when the big day comes!
Fine, 2 videos tonight, for the price of one. Same group, best known over here for 1 song in the early 90’s, but neither of these are it. But yes, 2 suitable songs, from a group from Southern California, you bet! Firstly, the one you got a clue about in the blog title
Secondly, not the greatest version of a song that sort of gets mentioned in the blog, but if anyone wanted to see how Michelle Phillips (the last surviving member of Mamas and Papas) was looking recently, heres your chance!
