Yes, today was the day of the eye test. And yes, that in more senses than one explains the title of this blog. Well, fine, it fits in with the video too, but anyway…
To say I’ve been wearing glasses a while, would be a mild understatement, its coming up on 47 years in fact! I first discovered I was short sighted when I found out I couldnt read the hymn numbers on the board, in church, and had to ask my father what they were.
He told me, but very soon after that, I was taken to the optician, for what would be the first, of many sight tests so far in my life. No, I dont know how many, but I’m guessing about 25, if you asked. In those days, it was simply a screen in the optician, with lines of letters that shrunk to almost nothing, as you went down the board, and that was it.
Nowadays, they check the back of your eye, the pressure in your eye, and several other things, besides the standard sight test. Mind, it costs a bit more nowadays, though whether it really does, with inflation, no idea?
The other dramatic change since then, is even more noticeable. Back then, glasses were what they said they were, made of glass. Therefore, as you can imagine with a child, especially a teenager, there were a few times when the glass got shattered by accident. Nowadays, they are made of some material which is pretty much indestructible. And yes, I love that fact! Oh, the other thing, back then, if you were really short sighted, your glasses were thick, with a capital T. Nowadays, no way of telling just how blind you are without them lol!
I wont bore you too much with the details of the test, other than to say that seemingly over the last 3 years or so, my sight has only deteriorated very slightly. Good news, because there was a time when in 2 years (or even less at one point) when they were definitely going downhill fast.
Oh, you want to know? Yes, I am now the very happy owner of 2 pairs of glasses, or will be when the lenses are fitted. One is almost classical 30’s style cats eyes type, in blue frames, absolute heaven for a girl like me. The other pair are slightly less rounded, but still in that style, with silver/white frames.
The other change, I remember in the past, paying about £200 for one pair of glasses. Today, for 2 pairs, including test, and anti glare for both, just under £170!
Thank you, Specsavers, for the wonderful service, and for having such wonderful vintage style glasses available for vintage loving folk like me.
I will provide a photo, or two, once I have them.
The only other news, the hair getting done. In the end, I didnt get to Sophie, she had to go elsewhere on Thursday afternoon, so so did I! Irony is, my style has got nothing but praise, and I love it too. So, Sophie may have lost a client lol!
Alright, a treat. Thanks to Nicole Woodhouse this afternoon, I had a ‘non selfie’ taken (as I dont own a mobile phone) of my new look. The curls have lost some of their lustre over the last 2 days, but even so…here’s a look!
Oh, the video, no prizes for working out the song title. Actually, it comes from the year I started wearing glasses, eek!
Yes, its fair to say that a whole string of appointments, much like London buses have all come along at once, giving me quite a lively couple of weeks, or so.
Yes, the hair is finally getting done on Thursday, when the tresses will again (thankfully) become a bit blonder than they are at present. And, for a couple of days or so, at least, the hairstyle will be very much Harlow too, until the curls start to give way. Also on Thursday, my nails are getting done again, all going to make for a lively afternoon!
On top of that, I’ve finally (well overdue) got around to asking for an appointment for a sight test, and to get some new glasses. Yes, I know, perfect timing and all that, but given its about 15 months overdue, it has to be done. Given Specsavers (yes, they finally got the vote) have a pair like this
And the only picture I have seen of Jean Harlow wearing glasses is this one
They work rather well, as one of my pairs. Given they do 2 for 1 over £69 pairs, I might get something slightly more modern as the second pair, something like these, which are modern, but with an old fashioned feel
Beyond all this, I’ve also got a letter from the doctor, ‘suggesting’ I should arrange a blood pressure check too! Havent done it yet, but I really must.
Oh, then last, but by every means not least, next Tuesday marks the day I head back to Newbury, to get the make up topped up, and this time around, the eyelashes put on too. Yes, after all that, I promise a photo, or two. Down there until Thursday morning, I’ll take the chance to look around Newbury in my spare time, maybe try and find where I lived for 2 years, as well as walking around town.
Beyond that, I might get time to breathe, though its unlikely tomorrow, as I’m working a 14 hour shift!
The video, well, you could say that most of these are treatments of some kind, so I thought of this one
Well, yes, one of these I did consider mentioning last night, but given I suspected I might be short of fresh material 2 days in a row, I sort of cheated, and left it until tonight. The other, a lovely touch that happened this afternoon, and just reminded me that there are some wonderful old fashioned gentlemen still about, in these modern times.
Strictly, there is a 3rd lovely thing thats happened in the last couple of days, but as thats something I might get to treasure in the future, I’ll hold back on that one for now, either until then, or when I need blog material, when I havent an idea in my head. Lets just say for now, I know a very sweet angel, and leave it at that! 😉 Be interesting to see if she spots this lol.
OK, the one I held back on. Any sports fan, especially cricket ones, will have noticed that the World Cup is being held at present, and yesterday (though strictly, it started Sunday evening, our time), Ireland played their first game, against the West Indies. Many years ago, the West Indies were the mighty force in cricket, and however good Ireland might be, we wouldnt have been expected to win. Though in fact, back in 1969, they underestimated us, and suffered a humiliating defeat, remembered to this day, by anyone Irish, or with Irish ancestry.
But in 2015, there was no danger of them underestimating us, we are a far stronger team now, and they a far weaker one, especially as they have left out a couple of their big names, seemingly in spite, for events unknown. So, despite the bookmakers making it look so (my firm were 1/6 for WI), this was always going to be a tight match.
At 87-5, it didnt look tight, and yes, thats the West Indies in all sorts of trouble, I might add! But somehow, they dug themselves out of a hole, scored just over 300, quite a challenging target for Ireland. Except…
…until near the end, where we decided to make hard work of getting across the winning line, it wasnt. In the end, the Irish victory margin was a comfortable one. And no, the celebrations werent that of a shock result, it was one that Ireland clearly expected to win, and did so. I would love to have seen it live, but the match was in New Zealand, so happened overnight here, so I only saw the Irish run chase the next morning, in a highlights show. I only saw much of the West Indies innings due to finishing at 10.00 Sunday night, then having it on while I caught up on here.
The other nice touch? I had a massage this afternoon, and afterwards, I went to catch the bus back towards town to come home. There were 2 men already stood at the bus stop when I arrived, so I took my place behind them. But, when the bus turned up, both insisted I get on first! I even tried to convince them otherwise, but they weren’t having it.
No, I dont know who either of them was, but if you read this, thank you so much, it was a lovely gesture in these modern times. Tomorrow morning, when getting on the train to work, no, I dont expect the same treatment.
So, lets dip back into the golden oldies pot tonight, for a song title they clearly attributed to me
A few vintage ladies there, but no Jean. Monroe is there though, and lets just say my angel looks a lot like her!
…fall into a deep trance, just maybe?
Why, because today, I signed up to try a beginners course in hypnotherapy, and I might just put you into a deep sleep, and turn you into my entranced slave. Oh fine, yes, I’m kidding on the last point, honest I am. But put someone into a deep trance, and help them with something wrong in their lives, wouldnt that be wonderful? However, given that the course isnt until May, even assuming I get on it, I will be trying for other jobs in the meanwhile too.
But yes, what I’m trying to do, even at my age, is to maybe find something new, and challenging as the later years of my working career approach, and not just only go for roles in call centre, or data inputting. I know, its probably what I will end up doing, but for now…
Having been hypnotised a ‘few times’, I know what a pleasurable experience it can be, and I hope that at some point again, I’ll be the one deeply relaxed, and in trance. Especially if its in New Hampshire, and I get to find out more about my past self, by doing so. So yes, wouldnt it be lovely if I could be trained to do the same to others?
And no, honest, I wouldnt use my hypnotic powers to convince anyone to give me a job…Oh fine, I might, for the perfect job, if I’m really good at it. But if I’m that good at it, I’ll probably stick to being a hypnotherapist anyway!
But, if anyone really wants to be my hypno slave, then, hmm…angel.
In other news,
When I originally planned to spend some time in Hollywood, I was assuming I would have to fit it into my holiday allowance at work, so I only booked for a week. So now, under the circumstances, I’ve decided to be a little devil, and go for 10 days. I dont doubt I will find plenty to fill that time, and probably more, even without all the auditions to play Jean, from all the Hollywood studios lol!
The only fun. I’ve already booked my hotel for the 7 days I was planning to be away, booked in a non smoking king bed somewhere in Hollywood, and…the snag is, for the 3 extra days I now want to book, that room option isnt available. The 2 double bed room option is for all 10 days, as is the larger king size room, but…I dont really want to book one room at the hotel for 3 days, then move to another room for the next 7, obviously. But, the booking is of the non cancellable type, to get the discounted price open to members of the hotel group scheme. If worst comes to worst, I’ll do just that, but I have enquired by email, if it can be changed (seeing I still want to stay at the hotel), and just pay the extra as necessary.
Oh, and lastly, while talking of spending extra…I’ve decided to treat myself, and my creaky joints out of my redundancy fund. Yes, I’m going to fly to Los Angeles, not in economy class, but in premium economy, with Virgin. Yes, I know, but I’m sure my joints will appreciate the extra space, and luxury, lets face it. I would love to have gone business class, but I really cannot justify that much money when I havent yet got a new job lined up.
Anything will be fun, and a delight for someone who has never flown anything but economy in her life anyway!
I know, evil mind controller, sorry, budding hypnotherapist, but thats a while off yet, and I have to prove I can do it first.
Oh, sorry, I forgot, I was right, no valentine cards again this year!
The video, what my hypnosis patients will get to see, putting them into trance
OK, fine, to the few of you who read both blogs, this is a double post, so dont concern yourselves too much with running to the other, whichever that may be?
And yes, some of this may relate to today’s date lol!
Last night, thanks to some wonderful people at Bradford Cathedral, I got the chance to see Clara Bow on a big screen. Well, yes, anything bigger than a laptop monitor would be something, but anyway…
Lets say that its not hard to see why Clara was a silent movie star. She has a wonderfully expressive face, and good acting skills. Of the male stars, Charles Rogers (Jack) impressed me too with his skills, but Richard Arlen (David) came over less well, to be honest. But the film, especially the flight sequences really are quite something.
The staff at the Cathedral were wonderful, the organist was very good (both musically, and in person), and they even provided us with wine and nibbles too! All in all, a wonderful evening.
OK, to the silly bit, as yes, it is February 14th, after all! Well, at this point, I’m assuming all my Valentine cards have gone to my work address, as none have arrived here. Right, fine, I’m not really expecting any at work either, but a girl can dream. Probably why I’m doing a late shift tonight, was never considered as a likely to be being wined, and dined!
I know, I know, I’m not the type to throw myself at men, or women (yes, bi), or indeed show inclinations to romance, but I dont remember that ever stopping the likes of Gable in the past!
No, I cant remember the last time I got a Valentine card, nor do I realistically expect to get one in the near future, but as I say, a girl can dream.
Ah well…You might get a shock when I next post on Monday, but dont hold your breath!
Fine, lastly, the video. If I said the name, Donna Lewis, one song generally comes to mind. But there is so much more to her music career, and this is a much more recent number. As I say, for someone, I could be the one?
As friends might know, I dont go to the movies very often. In fact, from memory, the last movie that I saw shortly after it came out was ‘I, Robot’, and that was 2004! That was actually in Dallas, and was my first experience of some new movie fad, which I think was surround sound, but dont quote me on that. Apart from ‘Spider Man 2’ which I’d seen earlier that week, with the same host, it had been a while since I’d seen anything live at a cinema. Prior to that, absolutely no idea, its been that long.
Since then, I have seen films on TV, or on DVD, but most, if not all wouldnt be described as modern.
I have seen one movie out, in that 10 year period, but that wasnt new. That was Pandora’s Box, the famous Louise Brooks silent movie, made in 1929, seen in the Grand Theatre, in Leeds. Jean Harlow movies may not be quite the most modern things I’ve seen since then, but you get my drift.
So, the news that I’m going out on Friday, to see a movie in Bradford, might come as a shock to some. Well, until I say that the film was made in 1927, stars Clara Bow, and is again a silent one, ‘Wings’. Thought to be a lost film for so many years, a copy was found in France, restored, so that we are fortunate enough today to still be able to see the first Oscar winning movie, the only silent film to win best movie award, in fact.
Lets see, the movie caused shock back then, with nudity, men kissing, and a few other things besides. Nowadays, well, …
But in this case, its not just the history of the movie that’s stunning, its the setting for watching it, Bradford Cathedral, with the music provided by the organ there. Link
Seriously, this should be quite something. I have seen scraps of Clara Bow in movies, thanks to You Tube, but a whole movie, on a big screen, of course not. Sadly, many of her movies are lost, have never been found as yet, and in most, if not all cases, probably never will be now, given how much the film would have deteriorated over that period of time.
A good number of Louise Brooks films have met the same fate, and as for some, like Theda Bara, barely any of her films still survive. Oh, and as a sidenote, the first performance of a Harlean Harlow Carpenter has met the same fate. Thats right, Jean Harlow’s first film, ‘Honour Bound’ is a lost movie, though she was only an uncredited bit part actress at the time!
As you might have guessed, I dont have a Beau, to see Ms Bow with, even on Valentines weekend. No, you dont have to date me, or even wine and dine me first, but if you want to see a rare moment of history, in an amazing setting, this is your big chance.
If anyone asks, just say Jean Harlow sent you lol!
The video, the most poignant version of Sound Of Silence I could find, the 10th anniversary of 9/11, sung just by Paul Simon. If you want the earlier, original, its not hard to find!
Before you ask, no, I still havent heard back about the last interview, have no idea if thats a good thing, or bad? Given its internal, I would at least expect to hear something, but nowadays…
Anyway, beyond all that, 3 weeks from now, I will have been made redundant. That last shift might be quite a funny thing, though as things are beginning to play out, it may not be my last day of work at William Hill. Confused? Well, it seems they may well be covering themselves against the whims of the new system, as I have already been asked if I would be interested in working ‘casually’ for the next couple of weeks (minimum), just in case. Happy to do Cheltenham week (w/c 9th March), and do the weekend of the previous week, but of course, midweek that week is back to Newbury, for the make up top up, plus finally getting those big eyelashes to flutter too!
Beyond that, I assume that if the new system works fine, then that will be it, and on paper at least, my 5 week notice period would take me up to my Hollywood holiday. If it doesnt, then I may well be working on, and off, until 11th April, Grand National day! We will see…
As is always the case at times like this, there will be some people I will miss, some I wont, and a few in between!
But beyond that, its the big, bad world of job hunting for me, and indeed, to some degree, before then as well. Ideally, I’d love to find something nearer to home, though I’ll travel to Leeds if I really have to, though the body would prefer otherwise. I’ll take full time happily, but equally, if I can find something about 25 hours or so, I will split it between that type of work, and make a few extra pounds as an author, hopefully.
So, if anyone reading this locally (or wants to tempt me greatly otherwise) knows of call centre work, data input work, or indeed retail cashiering, or similar, then let me know, especially jobs that wont appear on the obvious websites.
My thought was always to temping, or the like, prior to my holiday, as I couldnt see employers being keen on me disappearing for a week, so soon after starting, but who knows? But for now, I might as well temp with the firm I know, as a firm I dont! And yes, if I work through to Grand National day, I’ll just take the week off, beyond job interviews (maybe?) until I go away.
Yes, fine, if there is a Hollywood studio out there, who wants to sign me up to play Jean (or her mother), then wonderful, but seriously, I dont expect that to happen! But lets face it, Jean’s big break came out of pure chance, so…as Yosser Hughes said many years ago, Give us a job!
The video, some very early Abba. You can tell that, just look at how different Agnetha looks to the glory days! As I say, someone needs love, and a new job!
Fine, a question tonight that might be more apt for ladies, but there must be men who hold interviews who know the answer to this. Why, the black dress? And if not, for job interviews, what colours are considered apt to liven up the occasion?
Yes, I’ve clinched the maths part of the test for the internal role I want, but lets face it, that was never going to be my weakness, was it? Interview is tomorrow afternoon, and as things stand, its going to be my black dress, and high heels.
Not that I mind wearing the dress (well, its not that warm at this time of year, but anyway…), and the heels will only go on shortly before the interview, but it led me to thinking, is a black dress the only ‘suitable’ colour for a job interview, for a lady to wear? There must be more, but I just cant decide what!
No, I have no plans to wear a flouncy, Jean Harlow special, but wearing something more colourful, if permitted, might just be fun! But is it, and if so, should I go out and buy a second black dress, just for a bit of variety? Because hopefully, with all the job interviews ahead of me (Ha ha), I might fancy a change. But can it be done?
Anyone with a suggestion, before about 11.30 tomorrow morning GMT, feel free to do so, and I’ll see if I’ve got anything suitable. I know one thing, the taxi driver is in for a treat tomorrow night when I bowl out in a dress, instead of top and trousers!
As for the interview, convincing someone who knows me, that I know enough about football to cover that side of the job, should be interesting. And no, I refuse to use cleavage as a secret weapon lol!
The video, one of those numbers you never think about, until you want a stylish dress option. Wombles take on Hollywood, and though Jean isnt in it, there is most definitely a Mae West moment, which I love.
Oh, and wishes of good luck are permitted too, all you lurkers!
Well, so onwards and upwards to Plan B!
I have actually currently applied for one role at work, one that gets me away from the phones though. Our pre match trading department needs an assistant, and I’ve gone for that, given that a lot of it is data, and mathematics, areas at which I’m pretty strong. Unfortunately, the occasional challenge of conjuring up football prices from time to time, might, err, be more entertaining, shall we say? But as someone in the team said to me, my knowledge of other sports is so strong, it might override things. Probably not in a supposedly 54 runner field I suspect, but who knows?
Anyway, apart from all that, I cant deny that the redundancy package on offer isnt tempting, and reasonably generous. So yes, I’d love to pull something out of the hat, so I can get a job, and get the money. At my age, this might prove interesting, but I’ve been having a dabble on Reed’s website today, in the valiant hope that…you just never know! Havent yet had any offers from Hollywood, to play Jean, or her mother, but I guess thats hardly surprising, seeing they dont even know about me lol!
There is one other job at work that I could apply for, but it holds little appeal. But as they say, any port in a storm may come into it, especially as with the months trial option, I can always find something a (little) later, and still get the money as well.
So the black dress, or indeed, another dress, may yet get to go on show again, sometime soon.
The video, my appeal to all those employers I’ve sent applications to, via Reed
Oh, and a momentary amusement. I put this photo up on Facebook as a liked link, and someone I know asked if it was me. I think she was kidding, but I can see her point. This is the photo
This is a similar one of me
Yes, I can see it, I guess. And no, the CV has gone in as Ms Nicholls, not Ms Harlow!
