One of the amusing things that happens at work, is that some people think I can be easily shocked, because I seem such a quiet old lady at times. No idea where they get that idea from, but anyway…
So when the talk arose about a new seat for myself, designed to at least aid me with my back issues, someone in the office came up with some interesting designs, shall we say? No, I’m not going to describe them, but some of the items involved were definitely, err, adult, shall we say? It fair to say he wasnt expecting my reaction to be just how much I liked the look of them! Yes, lets say that one of them would make moving your chair an arousing experience, and leave it at that.
The snag with that, of course, is that in my acting life, its fair to say that I’ve seen my share of weird things used as props, and I’ve certainly worn some outfits that you wouldnt normally walk down the street wearing. Fairies, gnomes, and all variety of fae folk, yes, been there, acted that, probably!
I’ve also worn leather in my time, though I’m not sure if that was for a role, or for a shoot, as it was a long time ago now. I’ve also worn a silver zentai suit for more personal fun reasons as well. Now, a role that required me to wear something like that, oh yum!
Mind, nowadays my body is probably in a state (with the need for a wheelchair at times) where the Davros (of Dalek fame) look would be more apt, and more suitable. And fine, I wouldnt mind the wired up stuff either!
But in truth, probably the weirdest (though both for charity reasons) were outfits where if I didnt remove the head, you wouldnt have known I was in there. One Children in Need day, while working in Newbury, I wore a Teletubbies suit at work, all day. Tinky Winky, if I remember rightly, for those who want to know. But as I was working, between photos being taken, and taking donations, that head didnt stay on all day. Might have been fun, but hot if I had, but anyway…
Much further into the past, I actually wore a similar design, and didnt get to take my head off, for a few hours at least. Yes, for some charity event (I have no idea, its about 40 years ago!), I was a Womble! No, I have no idea which one now, but it was great fun to do.
But yes, like most people who have spent any reasonable amount of time in the acting world, when it comes to clothing, or other outfits, we’re pretty hard to shock. Electric shock might just work, but unless its a decent voltage, with me, well… 😉 And yes, those ECT scenes you see in movies, or on TV (or on You Tube), then yes, I’d love to act one of those, believe me!
So sorry folks, trying to shock me with talk of strange chairs, or strange outfits, you need to try pretty hard lol!
The video, well, it relates to one of those outfits. Some of it is clearly live (the Intro), though I’m not sure how live the singing actually is. And no, sadly, none of said Wombles was me!
So, assuming I can get feminist, if I dont get all militant about it, right? Oh fine, you know me already, I dont do militant, just equal chances for the fairer sex anyway!
Back in April 2015, on my first trip (but definitely not my last) to Los Angeles, I had the pleasure of getting in contact with a wonderful woman named Tema, about a group called Women In Media, who are only trying to do what is fair, and give women an equal chance in media as a whole, but in this case, primarily Los Angeles, of course. On my last night of the trip, our contact got beyond online, when I met her, and a number of other people dedicated to the cause, to watch a 1940 Lucille Ball film, directed by Dorothy Arzner.
It was a wonderful evening, and I have the feeling that if I hadnt been flying out the next morning (yes, timing is a pain, sometimes), I might have at least made a few worthwhile contacts, and who knows what more? I’m not saying I’d now be a movie star, but earning a decent living, in small/medium acting roles, or even writing, who knows?
I was fortunate enough to meet up with her again in May, for a reading event in Hollywood on a Sunday afternoon while there, and only amazed that she wasnt the only one to remember me! Well now, I’m delighted to say, Women In Media have been given 501(c)(3) status, so are now having a big relaunch, complete with new, impressive website at https://womennmedia.com so go and give it a checkout, if relevant to you, as its now live.
To answer questions, yes, I am a member, but no, my profile isnt up yet. It will be in the next few days though, so if you want to use my talents… Yes, this is principally about behind the camera work, because thats an area that women struggle to get their chances at, even more than on the screen. So yes, my profile is probably going to end up looking like a writer, that acts a bit, rather than an actress who writes a bit, but hey, I’m a combination of both, so…
No, dont look for me at many events, I will get to them when I’m in town, but lets face it, thats not often! But I’m certain that if you mention the name, Harlean to Tema, she will know who you mean, there arent many Harlean’s in the world, lets face it. Though Stevie might strike more initial chord, as thats what she got to know me as, of course.
So, all we are saying, media industry, is give women a chance! Not just for me, but all those other wonderful, hard working people out there just looking for that chance!
The video. Yes, its a variation of that song by Cyndi Lauper, but a different sound. Oh, and for some strange reason, the whole concept of the video appeals to me, just saying…
So fine, the last couple of blogs have had meaningful thoughts, and details, mixed in with some light hearted stuff, so lets continue in that vein (pardon the pun) for tonight as well. And yes, I’m told my teeth will look normal in the morning lol! 😛
Yes, today was the day when a woman broke my skin, and took blood from my body. Oh fine, honestly, it wasnt a vampire with her teeth, but…that might have made for a more fun day if it had been, and I could have flown home afterwards lol! That would have been a lot quicker than relying on the truly awful First Bus service, for sure!
To be honest, I remembered the last time that someone tried to take some blood from me for a test, and they had a hard time trying to find a viable vein to take some from. So I wondered if today might be the same, but no, she found one easily, sharpened her teeth, and bit…mmm!
No, honest, she didnt. She pricked me with a needle, withdrew a reasonable amount of blood (or it seemed so to me at least), and then simply gave me a small pad to hold over the spot, and that was it! Well, stuck it to my arm, like a plaster, which is how I have it now, but besides all that…
I know, no secret serum injected into my veins, turning me into who knows what (robot would have been nice, obviously), no nibbling with teeth to turn me into an innocent victim of a vampire, or anything like that, shame!
Ah, the buses. There are 2 routes that head in my direction from the Hospital. One should run every 10 minutes, one should run every 20. Both had a bus due soon after I arrived at the bus stop, so…Yes, eventually, 25 minutes or more later, 2 buses turned up, pretty much at the same time. Before that, who knows, invisible buses? Or maybe I had been turned into a vampire, and just couldnt see them? No, nobody else saw them either, lol! I honestly think the only things that bus company are First for, are unreliabilty, and poor service!
So yes, again, I have to wait on results, which should be about a week or two. No, I dont think they’ll be telling me I’ve been turned into a vampire, somehow! 😛 Hopefully they’ll offer me a whole new body, but thats very unlikely too!
Right, video time. There is, as often, a clue to the song in the blog title. The singer, one of the true greats of all time!
Oh, I wish they would, but I suspect more boringly, they’re just going to try to patch me up, and see how it goes from there. But a woman can dream lol…Is anyone old enough to remember thats a line concerning the original Bionic Woman? I have no idea if they repeated it for the revival, as I never saw any of that.
So yes, its now official, to no surprise from me at least, that the bone density in my back, and hips has officially been described as low. How low? Not quite sure, but as the nurse virtually suggested putting an IV of Calcium into my body makes me think its not good, at all.
Anyway, end result of all this, involves another trip to a Hospital, albeit this time, the one in Huddersfield, for blood tests. Yes, blood tests, seemingly lots of them! If there is a blood test I’m not getting done, other than HIV, I havent spotted it. I only remember the last time that someone tried to get blood out of me, for a test, they struggled to find a vein to take one, so hope that goes better this time, as I have no desire to look like a pin cushion! Mind, if instead of taking blood, they want to inject me with some strange silver serum lol…? 😉
Of course (I wish!) the reason for all these blood tests might be something interesting? After all, if they were going to cybernetically upgrade me, or give me the Bionic Woman treatment, they would want to check all my physical matters beforehand, wouldnt they? 😉 Oh fine, I know its not likely to happen, but I can dream, until Tuesday at least! Yes, I would love that, absolutely!
Anyway, related to all this, the ‘old lady’ has accepted the inevitable, and the request to make the 4 day week a permanent arrangement has now gone in at work. I’m also putting next year’s holiday plans on hold for a few months, until I see how the financial position looks, and how much I’m capable of doing while away. I was hoping I could do 2 trips next year, and probably could just about do it money wise, but have decided to take a review on that for now. Well, unless they offer me that Cybernetic upgrade, post blood tests at least, lol.
Right, the video. I’ll pass on the parachute failure, but if they want to rebuild me like the Bionic Woman, a whole different matter! Seriously, this was 40 years ago, eek!
